This is the foolish British couple who, despite strong advice to the contrary, insisted on visiting Iran during their motorcycle journey from Europe to Australia.
Their family apparently pleaded with them to not include Iran, and advice from the government is of course that Iran is not a safe country to visit.
Despite all that, they thought they knew best, and have been imprisoned on espionage charges.
I agree with you. Wait now for the nasty put downs and know it all comments.
They thought they knew better than experts and Government officials and now are paying the price. We were all aware of what the regime was like although they were in fact granted visas to go there.
Instead of just touring they chatted to local people which made the authorities suspicious and guilty of espionage.
Surely the Iranian Government doesn't really think the British Government would employ two such people as spies? They were far too obvious if they were gathering information. More Johnny English than James Bond.

My comment to seapebble
And I didn't see the two previous posts before I posted mine so it is a standalone statement, not a response to anyone.
Seapebble - a rich life fully lived? I think loving and caring for your children, not chasing your own dreams and leaving them to pick up the pieces when it all goes pear shaped. That’s a rich life fully lived.
No matter how foolish these people were they do not deserve this ! Tuliptree were you born unsympathetic or did it take practice!?
Silvershadow is corrrct beyond the pale indeed. Tuliptree you appall me . What a horrid and despicable thing to 'say'
Your comments have made me feel sick, although I understand that how I feel is beyond your ability to understand .

Disagreeing = nasty put downs . Know it all comments - well yes, I do know a great deal so I’m fine with that.
Iran is a very beautiful country with a rich heritage and beautiful architecture.
In normal times it would probably be on some people's bucket lists.

But that’s not relevant atm is it? And they knew that
I know. But they were granted visas and I believe they booked with a tour company, so visits were still allowed, presumably at your own peril. They must have been aware of the warnings then gone off and done their own thing. I agree they surely knew the consequences.
That's an enlightening post Seapebble. Thank you.
There is a difference between having no sympathy for them and actually seeming to relish the punishment they're receiving.
So you’re not prepared to respond about who you’re calling a bitch then? What makes you think using that word even with a pathetic childish comma is acceptable?

Yes.
We can wonder how could they be so arrogant and foolhardy but still feel the 'crime' did not deserve that punishment. That is because we do not live under a repressive regime which considers mass murder of its citizens is just punishment for disagreeing with them.

Utter rubbish - it’s a bit of a stretch between having no sympathy and relishing. I frankly do not care at all about them and wish they weren’t wasting FO resources funded by us taxpayers.

Thanks for that considered, polite post. I wonder why you felt the need to post it?

What a nasty thing to say Tuliptree. Honestly! Some people on this website are just beyond the pale really.
I agree. Tuliptree and several others have clearly never made a foolish error of judgement, a decision involving high risk or a danger to themselves. Is that a rich life, fully lived? If we all chose the absolutely safe route there would be no pioneers, no adventurers, no risk takers - what kind of world would that be? No Isaac Newton with the experiments he did on himself. No Marie Curie, no Florence Nightingale, no Edith Cavell, no Boudicca. I had lots of hair raising adventures in my time (I did nothing as heroic as those listed). A foolish, wayward idiot I was sometimes but what adventures I had. As far as we know, this couple are not paedophiles or even greedy oligarchs. For their foolhardy choices they are now suffering extreme hardship and mental anguish. It's not "faux emotion" for me. It's a real feeling of empathy - not an emotion of which I'm ashamed.
👏👏 seapebble.
Like I said in my earlier post people often leave their senses behind when they travel abroad whether on holiday or adventures.
Nearly every week there’s a go fund me appeal for people stuck in foreign countries because they did not take out the appropriate insurance for things like horseriding, bungee jumping or other risky pastimes.
I am sympathetic for this couple and their family just as I was for the Iranian lady who got imprisoned out there when visiting her parents.
What Tuliptree said may have been nasty, but it was true, they were arrogant enough to think they would get away with it, serves them right.
The comment by the poster TULIPTREE wasn't entirely nasty in itself, if that's what she really thinks, but her calling others comments sentimental claptrap, silly, irrelevant and utter rubbish is nasty.
I like the post by SEAPEBBLE.
No Essexgirl, it does not serve them right !
What sort of person are you and others who spout such rubbish. I despair.
Yes, a foolish couple- but surely you can't believe they deserve such brutal punishment. What the hell is wrong with you. I simply do not understand your mentality. This is actually happening to this couple right now as we type , do you genuinely belive what you say' If so I fear for humanity. God forbid!!!!!!!
It’s not a nasty comment.
It’s the truth.
We all know their predicament.
All the sympathy in the world won’t make any difference.
And yes, entirely their own fault.
Save some sympathy for their relatives.
I couldn't agree more Shelflife.
Thank you Plevey, I appreciate that. I feel sick to my stomach not just because of the horrendous predicament this couple are in but because of the attitude of some people on GN. Would they feel so vindictive if it were their loved ones incarcerated in Iran and suffering the barbaric regime there ? Do these people have the slightest idea of what is happening to this couple. If they do but dont care it beggets belief!
I can scarcely bear to think of what is happening to this couple- foolish, yes , stupid for ignoring government advice,
Yes!! We know that. I am wondering if Tuliptree and others with the same opinion are more concerned with voicing their righteous indignation than thinking seriously about what us happening to these people.
Have they no compassion !?
I agree Shelflife. Well said
