Life Dramas

I recently found out about the Karpman Drama Triangle - a set of behaviours or roles i recognise in my life - i've been in all the roles at different times. i am seeing that this Drama Triangle offers a way to understand and break away from a pattern which just leads to unhappiness.

See what you think:

The Karpman Drama Triangle
The Drama Triangle describes a pattern we can all get into in difficult relationships. There are three roles, and we can move from one to another surprisingly quickly.
The Victim
Feels hard done by, powerless or picked on. There can be a “Why does everything always happen to me?” attitude. They may be passive-aggressive rather than openly saying what they want or need.
The Rescuer
Jumps in to help, fix or do things for someone that they could — and perhaps should — do for themselves. They may then feel hurt, resentful or angry when their help isn’t wanted or appreciated.
The Persecutor
Blames, criticizes, attacks, intimidates or puts someone down. They can be genuinely nasty — making the other person feel small, guilty or at fault.
And the interesting bit is that we don’t necessarily stay in one role. Someone can start as the Rescuer, become the Victim when their help isn’t appreciated, and then turn into the Persecutor: “After everything I’ve done for you…”
A simple example
A mother keeps doing things for her adult daughter — making appointments, sorting out problems, giving advice, even when the daughter hasn’t asked her to.
The mother is the Rescuer: “I’m only trying to help.”
The daughter gets fed up and says, “Mum, I can manage my own life.”
The mother then feels hurt and becomes the Victim: “Fine. Nobody appreciates anything I do. Everything I do is wrong.”
She may then become the Persecutor: “You’re so ungrateful. After everything I’ve done for you…”
And the daughter may then become the Victim herself.
That’s the triangle — people switching roles and pulling each other into the drama.
How do you get out of it?
The way out is to stop playing the role you’ve slipped into: take responsibility for your own feelings and choices, let other people take responsibility for theirs, and say what you actually need without blaming or rescuing. We can help other people – but check that they actually want our help first.
None of this is to say we do not have painful things in our lives - life can bring really painful events to us. It is just about the way we relate to our challenges.
I have found this helpful. Maybe others will too.

I feel in life we have to constantly adapt.
I don’t relate to what you write, sorry, OP.

Its ok Tilly Trotter - different ideas work for different people. And i agree with you - things change and we do have to adapt.

He seems to have spent a lot of time describing life.
His theory sounds typical of someone living in San Francisco in 1968.

There’s a name for it now? I have been at all points of the triangle, at different times.. I think most of us have and have managed to survive.

It all sounds familiar but then real life is far more nuanced and messy.
I don’t think is possible to break it all down but am not it dismissing those who would find this helpful.

Actually, I can identify with this and think it’s a fairly easy pattern to slip into and probably very difficult, but not impossible to break or change.

Very interesting thanks

Life is all about change and adapting, I do think most are either glass half full or glass half empty son it colours everything you do.

TLDR

Thank you Cossy. When I saw it I realise now that I resisted it - did not want to see myself going round that triangle. But it feels quite liberating now i do see i have played all those roles at different times. I will at least now try to pay more attention and stop myself falling into those roles when I notice it happening.

Wishing you a future where you feel at ease with all your roles Applegran - life is not always straightforward is it?

People seem to be getting more and more rude these days. Snippy.

It's an interesting idea. Oh how I love to rescue, its familiar to me from childhood.

What is TLDR

MawsRosie the TLDR made me smile. Do we need to record it if we don't read a thread? Should there also be a SSDR (Short So Did Read) abbreviation?

On a more serious note, my daughter told me about a theory (I assume it was this one) and said that I rescue my son. She was right! He was going through a tough time and I had slipped into that role - too easy! I stepped back, and did him - and myself - a favour. So I didn't assume a victim role, because I took on board her advice.

Crocus5

What is TLDR

It's a forum abbreviation for "Too long, didn't read".
