Would Miriam Margoyles' fans be so supportive if she was male.she seems to get away with awful behaviour because she's an old woman.
I think there’s something in what you say.
Yesterday, I went to our local Theatre, and spent two wonderful hours listening and taking in this woman’s extremely well educated thoughts on our humanity and world, and her extremely interesting and full life.
Bad language aside, and it doesn’t offend me, it was in context and it was, in the main, highly amusing.
What struck me the most, aside from how very eloquent and beautifully spoken she is, was her compassion and kindness and concern for the whole of humanity.
It wasn’t the show I was expecting, it was well thought out, yet not stifling or stuffy.
She was accompanied by Ed Byrne (Southern Irish Comedian) and most of the second half was audience questions, which she answered openly and honestly and with humour.
The first half ended with a request from her, to join her singing “Daisy, Daisy”, a song which reminds her of her mother and the second half ended with her reciting a piece from Shakespeare’s Little Dorrit.
I liked her before, I absolutely understand she’s not popular with many, but she spoke from the heart, with humanity, in some ways with humility, and with concern about her country, no longer being the United Kingdom, but the Divided Britain.
She urged us all to be neighbourly, to live and love with kindness, compassion and justice.
Yes, she can be rude and completely “un-PC”, and has few filters, but she was a thoroughly charming lady and we had a couple of hours of fun and amusement and came away a free hardback book and lots of thoughts to mull over.
As we left the theatre, after a drink, she was being picked up in a pretty normal but large car. She waved merrily to to us all.

A bit late to the party but no, she's not for me, I'm afraid; too rude and too brash & highly irritating to boot!
If she appears on my TV screen its a quick flick of the chanel & tatty bye Miriam. 😶

Ed Byrne is on the latest Outsiding gardening podcast with Caitlin Moran; he’s very funny. He does tend to take over conversations, though; I wonder if he did that with Miriam? He’s a great walker, climer, gardener, dry stone wall builder etc etc. ( did you know that Scottish munroes were actually named after someone called Munroe who categorised them…and the smaller ones are named after the person who categorised them…)
They were very balanced and well matched and there was clearly laughter and fun between them both, some going totally off track and no sign of either trying to control or talk over the other.

How many times did she mention her bodily functions? Who wants to know this?
Just the once and totally in context!

There's no problem with her EQ. Did you see her meeting and talking to people in her Australian show and in her American show? She was kind and sympathetic. Her behaviour on live TV shows is put on for effect and ensures repeat bookings so people can be shocked all over again!
I do agree. I think those kind of “reality” shows are so far from “real” and extremely cleverly edited to get the most impact.
I admire her honesty and zest for life. Her use of language is well known so I assume those who don’t like it avoid her shows, books etc.
She's awful.
Bob Mortimer in his hilarious book The Long Shoe (it's fiction) takes the mickey out of people who rely on having a "quirk". She's one of those. Her "quirk" is being a rude old woman who likes to shock. She doesn't shock me, she puts me off.
cissy I can only assume that you didnt see her eg in women's prison in America and being amazingly tactful in a very difficult situation with some real gun fans. These documentaries go on for an hour each time with several in a series. Completely different from a snapshot TV interview.

I haven't watched these reality shows but would agree they are selectively edited. But, and it's a big but, if a person does not say or do anything offensive, insulting, mean or whatever then there's nothing to be edited into the program.
Cossy is not wrong
I’m from Dublin, which is geographically on the east coast of Ireland, but when I say I’m from ‘the South’, I mean the Republic of Ireland, as opposed to Northern Ireland. So it’s more of a political/historical distinction than a north-versus-south geographical one. Dublin is actually in the east, but it’s in the southern jurisdiction of the island.
Well, you can just say you're from Dublin..always good to politely challenge/inform people.

Quirk all the way to the bank.
That's true, Quirk.
She seems very fake to me. An attention seeker. Most actresses are but she takes it to a different level. Yes, I do know she is Australian by adoption, how could I not with her penchant for publicity ? Anyway, we are all different and all see different things in people. She actually reminds me of Meghan Markle in some ways .
For goodness sake. This thread has now reached peak daftness.

I like her,.. she is an incredibly warm and compassionate person. You know what you're getting with her.
Brilliant in Scotcese's The age of Innocence as Mrs Mingott. Prof Sprout Harry Potter.
Her travel documentaries show her ability to relate to people, without judgement.
Lucky you Cossy to see her, as I believe she has mitral stenosis a very painful narrowing of the spine. She has indeed, she touched on this and was clearly in pain and limiting mobility.
It was a “signed” performance, and she had such fun with a very “game” British “signer”, especially with “rude” words, it was really so amusing, the audience and herself, the signer and Ed were literally in stitches!!
Personally I think the woman is demented and I won’t watch any programme she is on. I don’t think she had asked for a signer to be there. It’s pretty standard these days - there were three working on a rota at a Bon Jovi concert last week.

I cannot stand her I think she is a vile old crone
Nice. Ageism and misogyny in one, short sentence.
Wow this is the thread for pearl clutchers!
Her show here in Perth was sold out very quickly. Pity, wanted to go.
I would like to see her, She is an intelligent woman and the language is just a small part of what and who she is. She joins the small band, for me, of human beings that I think a lot of , and wish I could have met. So wonderful Billy Connolly, the recent late great Dolly Parton, Dave Allen come to mind. Genuine caring people to be treasured compared to those that may not use "bad" language but what they say is obscene, selfish, untrustworthy and self seeking . Now let me see Oh yes the people that come to mind are D Trump , N Farage, Putin etc etc . You will probably never hear the least "swear" words from them, but incitement to riot, denying voting that does not go their way, lying and many other things that disgust and annoy me. Give me Miriam Margoyles any day, compared to that shower.

She may not have meant any harm but her 'assumption' and use of a racist term would receive absolute condemnation for most others, not the indulgent 'well that's Miriam' nods and smiles. Personally, I think stressed or not, she revealed an underlying attitude.
Margolyes started impersonating co-host Christine Lampard’s Northern Irish accent, then she asked Andi Peters: “What accent would be normal for you? What are you?”
“What am I? I’m me,” Peters said, to which the Harry Potter actor responded: “Well, you’re a mix, aren’t you? So you’ve got a Black daddy and a white mummy.”
He informed Margolyes that both of his parents are Black, before she went on to describe him as high yalla. She knows perfectly well this is an American racially discriminating term for mixed race people. He has already told her, he is not mixed race , he is black. Both parents are black. She says he's "not very black".
IOW, she questions his standard English accent , as if to suggest it's not his own, he's a migrant, anything but British born.
Then she's unbelievably rude and intrusive about his parents race. Then about his race and his colour.
Finally she says he's high yalla, an American term which she knows perfectly well is a rude, divisive, dismissive put down about mixed race.
When he questions her mis- calling his parentage, race and skin shade patronage she patronisingly dismisses this with
"we welcome everybody, it's about inclusion".
It was the opposite ; an appalling display of divisive exclusion based on Andi 's race, colour, origin, accent, nationality and parentage. She questioned and challenged all of them and then denied his corrections.
Not a closet racist, Cossy. Right out in the open.
Relentless overbearing overt racism.
I think a few posters need to read/ re-read this, then have a think about her delightful quirks, her ‘compassion’ and all round wonderful persona.
It’s hardly pearl clutching to dislike her treatment of Peters is it?
Even under the humour banner I don’t think racism is acceptable and am really surprised that anyone here excuses her.

Wow this is the thread for pearl clutchers!
I'm not clutching anything. I had the misfortune to hear her briefly on Graham Norton ( I think?) Thankfully I wasn't watching with family.
To me she seems like two different people.
I really like the side of her that does more serious programmes ,she can be very feeling and astute.
Many of her acting roles have been brilliant and she certainly is has good diction.
Yes, she often speaks her mind ( not always a bad thing)and not all will agree with her.
However I can’t stand it when she goes into just saying something for effect and when she goes on about farting, but then I can’t see why so many people find that subject funny anyway. Very childish.
