Yesterday, I went to our local Theatre, and spent two wonderful hours listening and taking in this woman’s extremely well educated thoughts on our humanity and world, and her extremely interesting and full life.

Bad language aside, and it doesn’t offend me, it was in context and it was, in the main, highly amusing.

What struck me the most, aside from how very eloquent and beautifully spoken she is, was her compassion and kindness and concern for the whole of humanity.

It wasn’t the show I was expecting, it was well thought out, yet not stifling or stuffy.

She was accompanied by Ed Byrne (Southern Irish Comedian) and most of the second half was audience questions, which she answered openly and honestly and with humour.

The first half ended with a request from her, to join her singing “Daisy, Daisy”, a song which reminds her of her mother and the second half ended with her reciting a piece from Shakespeare’s Little Dorrit.

I liked her before, I absolutely understand she’s not popular with many, but she spoke from the heart, with humanity, in some ways with humility, and with concern about her country, no longer being the United Kingdom, but the Divided Britain.

She urged us all to be neighbourly, to live and love with kindness, compassion and justice.

Yes, she can be rude and completely “un-PC”, and has few filters, but she was a thoroughly charming lady and we had a couple of hours of fun and amusement and came away a free hardback book and lots of thoughts to mull over.

As we left the theatre, after a drink, she was being picked up in a pretty normal but large car. She waved merrily to to us all. thanks

Trying to think of male "Personalities" that are similar to Miriam Margoyles. Roy Chubby Brown? Bernard Manning? Jim Davidson?

ITV has deleted this passage. Andi Peters who is British born and bred is 'welcome' in this country!

Yes, she touched on that, she said she meant no offence and had wrongly assumed (for whatever reason) he was mixed race (not that it matters) and that she was so sorry she’d caused him any hurt and it was not her intention.

She also stated, very clearly, that she been “warned”not to say or do anything, in any way, that could have been seen as “contentious” and it had stressed her slightly and she opened her mouth and well and truly put her foot in it.

The whole context shows she never meant anything racist, it might have been an odd way of putting it but she ended by saying her book was about inclusion… and we all low that British born and bred or not, nowadays anyone with a non-white skin is targeted by old and new racists who still abound everywhere. And with what is happening with the Far right, and others, it is spreading. As I see it Miriam in her own very particular, distinct way, way was trying to say she wants everyone of any colour INCLUDED.
I like her.
As an 80 year old you do tend to not hold back with frank and forthright comments which perhaps you wouldn’t have dared utter when younger. My filter is heading for the shredder, tho with added kindness I hope!! Good for her!

Thank good ness for the non-PC wherever they are!

How lovely, I adore her in everything she does from Harry Potter the Marigold Hotel.

She may not have meant any harm but her 'assumption' and use of a racist term would receive absolute condemnation for most others, not the indulgent 'well that's Miriam' nods and smiles. Personally, I think stressed or not, she revealed an underlying attitude.

Margolyes started impersonating co-host Christine Lampard’s Northern Irish accent, then she asked Andi Peters: “What accent would be normal for you? What are you?”

“What am I? I’m me,” Peters said, to which the Harry Potter actor responded: “Well, you’re a mix, aren’t you? So you’ve got a Black daddy and a white mummy.”

He informed Margolyes that both of his parents are Black, before she went on to describe him as high yalla. She knows perfectly well this is an American racially discriminating term for mixed race people. He has already told her, he is not mixed race , he is black. Both parents are black. She says he's "not very black".

IOW, she questions his standard English accent , as if to suggest it's not his own, he's a migrant, anything but British born.

Then she's unbelievably rude and intrusive about his parents race. Then about his race and his colour.

Finally she says he's high yalla, an American term which she knows perfectly well is a rude, divisive, dismissive put down about mixed race.

When he questions her mis- calling his parentage, race and skin shade patronage she patronisingly dismisses this with

"we welcome everybody, it's about inclusion".

It was the opposite ; an appalling display of divisive exclusion based on Andi 's race, colour, origin, accent, nationality and parentage. She questioned and challenged all of them and then denied his corrections.

Not a closet racist, Cossy. Right out in the open.
Relentless overbearing overt racism.

To be honest, I find her repulsive with her farting and so-called "humour".

Oreo Tue 08-Sept-26 16:31:09

I agree ButterandJam just awful.

springishere Tue 08-Sept-26 16:33:33

How many times did she mention her bodily functions? Who wants to know this?

I saw Chubby Brown back in the 90s, I have to say I only lasted 5 minutes, excused myself to go the loo & didn’t return to my seat.
From what I could see it was mainly men, so probably a lot of stag dos.
Also walked out on Joe Brand.
Back then I was young, quiet & naive.
At least with MGs book I could put it down.

MT62 Tue 08-Sept-26 16:40:40

To be honest toilet talk just makes me uncomfortable if in company.
Tbh, I don’t really have friends that talk about that type of stuff, unless it’s incontinence, or constipation.

Aveline Tue 08-Sept-26 16:42:38

It's only a tiny amount of what she says and does. Of course the cameras fixate on it as it leads to such prudish condemnation. There's much more to her than that.
PS we all go to the toilet!

Galaxy Tue 08-Sept-26 16:45:12

It was some of the worst racism I have seen. But if you only see 'identity' then you of course dont actually see the person.

Yes we do but it depends on the way a person describes their bodily functions.
Some people describe it in a discrete manner, & some people are just course.

Pinkrinse Tue 08-Sept-26 17:02:00

Saw her last year and absolutely loved the show. She’s so
Funny but as you say genuinely warm
And concerned. 😦

Sago Tue 08-Sept-26 17:04:24

I watched her in the Indian show too.
She has very low EQ, she behaved in a selfish and arrogant manner.
To publicly admit she wanted Boris Johnson to die and to speak to Andy Peters in such a way was appalling, yes she apologised but as a public figure she should know better.

Cossy Tue 08-Sept-26 17:07:22

We each have our own opinions and that’s great.

I wouldn’t bracket her with ANY male stand up comedians, she’s not a comedian, so comparisons are like comparing apples and pears.

She’s an actress and a fine one.

She’s also completely unfiltered and I can absolutely see why people either like or loathe her.

I completely agree the Andi Peters thing was appalling and very wrong.

She did apologise, and rightly so.

Excuse my own ignorance, what is EQ? Emotional Intelligence?

Fradders Tue 08-Sept-26 17:17:55

I used to like her, then a friend lent me her book..This Much is True,it was so vile I stopped reading it.I have disliked her ever since.

Attention seeking foul mouthed old woman. She knows exactly what she is doing.

MayBee70 Tue 08-Sept-26 17:37:48

Ed Byrne is on the latest Outsiding gardening podcast with Caitlin Moran; he’s very funny. He does tend to take over conversations, though; I wonder if he did that with Miriam? He’s a great walker, climer, gardener, dry stone wall builder etc etc. ( did you know that Scottish munroes were actually named after someone called Munroe who categorised them…and the smaller ones are named after the person who categorised them…)

Yes.

Aveline Tue 08-Sept-26 18:24:51

There's no problem with her EQ. Did you see her meeting and talking to people in her Australian show and in her American show? She was kind and sympathetic. Her behaviour on live TV shows is put on for effect and ensures repeat bookings so people can be shocked all over again!

Galaxy Tue 08-Sept-26 18:27:54

But it isnt shocking is it. It is predictable and boring. Sorry but I haven't ever heard her offer an original thought.

MayBee70 Tue 08-Sept-26 18:37:46

I love Ireland. But always think of it as people coming from either the North or the South although I’ve never been to Northern Ireland sadly. I do think of the west as a different area I suppose ( think of the wonderful magical film Into the West…note to self must watch it again) and Cork ( again never been there) as the south.

butterandjam Tue 08-Sept-26 18:42:18

I think that it’s ok for anyone to find her “highly offensive” or even “foul”, “repulsive” and “vile”.

You do not need to go and see her, read her books or watch her films and tv programmes.

She won’t give a tinkers cuss, and, frankly neither do I.

Each to their own. thanks

But it's not just a fun night out for you, or "each to our own", is it? This is about everybody, our whole society.

When somebody of her education and media fame openly performs vile racism in public on TV, TO A BLACK PERSON, she sends a loud message that her appalling racism is socially acceptable, entertaining, all part of the show " I can get away with it so why don't you. You have my permission snd encouragement to talk like this to black people just like I did, on the bus or at the checkout . You can mock black children about their parentage, grade them by skin colour. Do it like me".

That is an offence against the whole of society and damages us all, I'm ashamed you don't give a tinkers cuss.

OldFrill Tue 08-Sept-26 18:47:40

Would Miriam Margoyles' fans be so supportive if she was male.she seems to get away with awful behaviour because she's an old woman.
