Miriam Margolyes (some may not like this)

Yesterday, I went to our local Theatre, and spent two wonderful hours listening and taking in this woman’s extremely well educated thoughts on our humanity and world, and her extremely interesting and full life.

Bad language aside, and it doesn’t offend me, it was in context and it was, in the main, highly amusing.

What struck me the most, aside from how very eloquent and beautifully spoken she is, was her compassion and kindness and concern for the whole of humanity.

It wasn’t the show I was expecting, it was well thought out, yet not stifling or stuffy.

She was accompanied by Ed Byrne (Southern Irish Comedian) and most of the second half was audience questions, which she answered openly and honestly and with humour.

The first half ended with a request from her, to join her singing “Daisy, Daisy”, a song which reminds her of her mother and the second half ended with her reciting a piece from Shakespeare’s Little Dorrit.

I liked her before, I absolutely understand she’s not popular with many, but she spoke from the heart, with humanity, in some ways with humility, and with concern about her country, no longer being the United Kingdom, but the Divided Britain.

She urged us all to be neighbourly, to live and love with kindness, compassion and justice.

Yes, she can be rude and completely “un-PC”, and has few filters, but she was a thoroughly charming lady and we had a couple of hours of fun and amusement and came away a free hardback book and lots of thoughts to mull over.

As we left the theatre, after a drink, she was being picked up in a pretty normal but large car. She waved merrily to to us all. thanks

greyfur why? I'm sure you're family is not completely insulated from life!

I was just about to say I enjoyed her and Graham Norton chatting.
Her view is that farts "bring people together" smile

A lot of the stuff she says makes sense and I appreciate her thoughts on humanity. However I find her a little two faced and she changes her support at the drop of a hat. I have never actually liked her, ever. I have no objection to the woman she's not my cup of tea, nothing to do with her bad language and at times I have found her quite amusing.

No but I might feel slightly uncomfortable hearing a woman describing wiping her semen stained hands on grass ( for example)

A bit like an unexpected sex scene on TV when your parents were in the room watching a film with you.
I must admit, Ms. Margoyles does slightly give me that slightly uneasy feeling.

I don’t clutch pearls, and am unbothered by swearing, but I am not interested in other people’s sex lives, and am offended by racism. MM’s treatment of Andi Peters was disgraceful, particularly as it was on live TV so he couldn’t fight back,

As has been said, I can ignore her ridiculous tales about ‘finishing off’ three masturbating men in one day, and could switch off the TV when she’s being interviewed, but I think racism is a red line, and her diction and way with words will never excuse that, as it is inexcusable.

I always find the clutch pearls phrase interesting. It is often used when women are asserting boundaries.

OldFrill Wed 09-Sept-26 17:50:16

I don't understand how she survived the Andi Peters incident, had she been an elderly male talking to a younger female presenter she'd never be seen on TV again.

MissAdventure Wed 09-Sept-26 17:59:43

I agree.
It's very much a case of if a person's face fits at any one time, and hers currently fits.

Would Miriam Margoyles' fans be so supportive if she was male.she seems to get away with awful behaviour because she's an old woman.

I think there’s something in what you say.

How has she not been cancelled[I dont think I agree with cancelling, but others have been?].
Is she part of the secret club I forget the name of?

Galaxy Wed 09-Sept-26 18:37:05

Oh are we debating with emojis now, that is always fun.

JaneJudge Wed 09-Sept-26 18:38:08

I haven't seen Miriam but I saw Ed Byrne a few years ago. He did a stand up show about his brother. It was the funniest and most touching thing I have seen, stand up wise

JaneJudge Wed 09-Sept-26 18:38:49

I should of said his late brother

Miriam Margoles is an actress, and a very good one, which is how I judge her.

I have seen her on some chat shows and it is very apparent when she is being deliberately provocative, which is why I rarely watch them.
When I commented recently that I did not appreciate Jo Brand's comment about wishing it had been battery acid in a bottle-throwing incident I was advised that I didn't understand different types of edgy humour.
Perhaps that viewpoint should be applied to Margolyes' latest attempt by those who are so outraged.

OldFrill Wed 09-Sept-26 19:26:13

It generally seems to me that those accusing others of "pearl clutching" are themselves the most outraged that others don't share their opinions.

I don't think anyone has displayed outrage on this thread, just a few are curious as to how Margoyles gets away with offensive and racist behaviour where others would not.

btw "Pearl clutching" remarks put me in mind of "pearl necklace" slang - I'm sure Margoyles would appreciate that wry thought.

Rosie51 Wed 09-Sept-26 19:32:44

eazybee what if those who condemned Jo Brand for her acid comment are the same people who are now condemning Margolyes' racist remarks? She has subsequently in her own defence referred to her interest in all sorts of people including cripples!

Aveline Wed 09-Sept-26 19:52:48

Oh yes 'pearl necklaces'- I doubt most on this thread would get that OldFrill. I'm shocked at you!!

She gets away with it because of her beautiful speaking voice
Imagine if, say, Danny Dyer, Joey Essex, Gemma Collins had made exactly the same comments 😱
