Seems it’s now Harry’s uncle - the Earl of Spencer - having his turn at a “tell all” book.

Honestly why? What is the attraction this family have in airing their dirty laundry? It can’t be for money, he’s wealthy. He must think it’ll be cathartic like his nephew imagined it would be if he told us all “his truth”. More mud slinging. Talk about making a bad situation worse.

That's not true karmalady. The house that Diana requested on the estate was considered to be too near the road and a security risk. She was offered alternative accommodation which she turned down.

It's well documented that allegations of his refusal to help her are false.

They seem very damaged people. Inter generational trauma.

Visgir1 Thu 17-Sept-26 09:11:33

Disfunctional family. I always got the impression King Charles just tolerated him, after this statement from KC he really can't stand him, well done Charles.

Smileless2012 Thu 17-Sept-26 09:18:19

A brilliantly worded rebuttal Visgirl.

This book just stirs things up. I don’t think it is good for either William or Harry, particularly Harry who still seems to struggle with his mother’s death.

I agree with this.

It is a horrible reminder of what a mess it all was for the family, both at the time of Diana's death and the years leading up to it.

It must have been awful for the boys to have all this played out so publicly.

It is a shame that this is all being stirred up again.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 17-Sept-26 09:27:26

I will probably not read this book.

Should it have been written, not sure. However, I am not in favour of literary censorship unless it is proven lies.

Diana will be an important part of history in years to come, shouldn’t historians have details from both sides?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 17-Sept-26 09:30:44

( I suspect he’d never have dared try it on during the late Queen’s lifetime.)

Nail on head there Maw!

Luckygirl3 Thu 17-Sept-26 09:32:41

To be honest, if he genuinely cared about these boys, he would not have stirred all this up in public again - it can only be to their detriment.

It is a serious error of judgement on his part. Makes me feel his professed concern for them is in fact a bit thin.

The house of Windsor against the house of Spencer with Harry and Meghan cantering in stage left..

Who needs Shakespeare?

Historians tend to deal in facts.

This could be written with a spin and recollections may vary.

Aren,t all sides allowed to give their stories?
Charles and Diana both had books and interviews and I don’t remember the outrage that Harry,s book caused .
Now her brother wants his experience told…why not?
I certainly wouldn,t trust the “king” or any off his offspring to tell a fact based truth so I suppose this book will be the same .
Monarchy belongs in the past and that’s where it should have been left.
Hopefully if people can see through the very thin veneer of upstanding humans and see the mire underneath we,ll see the end of the “Windsors”. very very soon .
The billions we pay on their upkeep can be put to better use !

Earl Spencer is a historian of note! all books would've been gone over by lawyers prior to print.. you can bet he has recordings of phone calls!

The 'boys had to walk behind their mothers coffin to stop the crowds Booing their father. They were used.. that came out years ago.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 17-Sept-26 12:15:48

Yes he is a recognised historian.

I just Googled for accuracy

fancyflowers Thu 17-Sept-26 12:52:46

I heard it and was disgusted. So many people with no idea how to behave at a funeral

They weren't 'at the funeral.' They were outside.

This photo is from the BBC news website and captioned
The then Prince Charles and Earl Spencer in South Africa in November 1997, three months after Diana's death

Are we really expected to believe that Earl Spencer would be being so friendly and smiley if Charles had really said that about Diana only three months previously?

Smileless2012 Thu 17-Sept-26 12:58:24

First time I've heard that nonsense lemsip and am surprised anyone would believe it TBH and as for all books would've been gone over by lawyers prior to print, that doesn't stop them peddling lies as 'Spare' is an example of.

What a shame he didn't stick to books of historical note GrannyGravy.

Smileless2012 Thu 17-Sept-26 12:59:45

Some it seems will believe anything Rosie.

Harris27 Thu 17-Sept-26 13:06:00

Why can’t they just let this lady rest in peace.

More exactly
Diana asked her brother, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer, to use the Garden House on the Althorp Estate following her separation from Prince Charles. Charles Spencer turned down that specific cottage because it was already allocated to an estate staff member.Considering her safety and privacy, he offered her other properties, including the historic Wormleighton Manor in Warwickshire. Diana ultimately declined the alternative properties, which led to a temporary rift that was later cleared up through legal retractions and apologies from publications falsely claiming he left her without a home
Doesn’t mean I have a higher opinion of Charles Spencer ,but the facts are always preferable to rumour.

Smileless2012 Thu 17-Sept-26 13:34:52

facts are always preferable to rumour indeed MawsRosie, something you'd think Earl Spencer would be aware of having suffered at the hands of malicious gossip himself.

I wouldn’t be in the least bit shocked if the comments were true, but we weren’t there and can’t possibly know. There are so many for whom these “royals” can do no wrong, deluded to believe being born into a particular family can make one infallible. I am not one of them. He’s a human being. Some are nice, others aren’t. Being a “monarch” doesn’t make anyone a saint and there is much already publicly known about distasteful behavior from the whole embarrassing lot. Whether anyone here accepts it or not, the comments may or may not have been said.

Having said all that, I think it’s horrific to publish this. Diana’s children are alive. How painful must it be for those young men to read their father said such a low thing about their mother? If it’s true, it’s a shame. If Spencer is lying, it’s equally shameful. If this man cared even a tiny bit about the feelings of his nephews he would not have come out with this publicly. I am a grandmother and I miss my mother every day of my life. I would never dream of hurting my nieces or nephews by publishing such info about their parents knowing how hurt they are to be without their mother. Decency toward family is clearly not a priority for some.

Bellanonna Thu 17-Sept-26 13:40:40

How many commenting on here have resd the book? I haven’t, therefore I can’t comment.

Smileless2012 Thu 17-Sept-26 13:49:19

The book isn't out until next week but is to be serialised in the Daily Mail and I think this snippet was 'leaked'. You don't have to read the book to comment on one publicised item it contains.

Proof again that "spares" and those on the periphery of the Royal family should go away

CarrotTop Thu 17-Sept-26 13:58:00

It's been a long time in coming but, ever since his impassioned speech at the funeral, I've been expecting him to bite back in some way or other.
