I’m as uneasy as most posters about misogyny and what I see as oppressive practices in some religious groups,
The focus here is on practicing Muslims, women covered so only their eyes are visible and then sometimes hidden behind fabric

I share the concerns about the Archbishop of Canterbury, Stella Creasy and co. I’m equally if not more anxious about American evangelical groups where wives are expected to surrender

Then we have some orthodox Jewish communities where women must cover their hair, sit separate from men at synagogue. I may be wrong, haven’t checked but is it the Hispanic community where women work and men study the holy book

Faith can’t imo be dismissed but the closed nature of many faith communities provides ideal circumstances for abuse of women and children

Iam64
I don’t have a problem with practices inside a religious building, be it segregation or wigs or wimples or burkas or hats/ headscarves and so on.
I do have a problem with women having to wear long total coverings in other situations and segregation at a talk.
Nobody forces women to go to synagogue or church btw

Showing unease at how some Muslim women are treated is the only thing that can be done and hopefully in time these outdated cultural practices will cease.

Why are people so keen to shut down this debate? There have been lots of threads on misogyny in lots of other settings before without having to bring in misogyny everywhere else, why not this? A Bangladeshi woman in this country is asking for empathy from other women but it seems it’s not a topic we can discuss. Kind of proves her point really doesn’t it?

We can discuss it. But calling it a left-wing conspiracy and saying that Labour are kowtowing to Muslims is not a discussion, it's a distortion.

I think that an insistence on women being covered but not men is misogynist. But separating the sexes in religious and social settings is not confined to Islam - Orthodox Jews do the same. Roman Catholics cover their hair in church, as do High Church protestants, so covering women is something that cuts across numerous faiths, including others, I'm sure.

We can either have a society where religious tolerance works alongside protections for all, or we can start to dismantle the right to follow whatever beliefs we choose.

I fully agree that forcing women to stay indoors and cover themselves when out is abusive. It restricts their lives and prevents them from contributing to society.

However, in the UK in the 50s, many working and lower middle class women were confined to the house by the need to spend hours on housework, including scrubbing doorsteps that would be walked on, and whitening net curtains, amongst other pointless jobs amongst the hard labour of washing laundry and cleaning houses made dirty by coal fires. Again, it was social control that made them do it - having a dirty step or dingy nets was a sign of a slatternly woman, and that would reflect on her husband and family. Many husbands would have been furious if their wives had got jobs, and it was legal to bar women from pubs and other social areas, or to insist that they had a male escort. Was that so very different? I think the restrictions on women's social lives continued into the 70s or maybe 80s.

Two wrongs don't make a right of course, but I'm not sure that calling an understanding of how these things can work can be considered a left-wing conspiracy.

Yes a left wing conspiracy may be OTT but it does tend to be Labour MP’s, journalists and Church leaders who won’t brook any dissing of the aforementioned outdated cultural practices and therefore give credence, and credit to them, and in some cases kow-towing to the men.
Woolly minded do-gooding can actually do harm.

Was wondering who was calling it a left wing conspiracy.
It's that neutral/balanced fountain of wisdom, The Telegraph!
🤣 😂

It’s the title of an article written by Dia Chakrabarty , it’s in The Telegraph but there are no unbiased neutral or balanced actual newspapers. The journalists who write articles for them can often be tho.

It’s called a left wing conspiracy as left wing MP’s and Church Leaders and identity politics generally will fall over backwards not to upset any group of ethnic background men.

Maremia Mon 28-Sept-26 22:04:42

Church Leaders left wing?
Seriously?

Maremia Mon 28-Sept-26 22:05:50

And I agree The Telegraph is certainly not 'balanced'.

Neither is The Guardian or the Mirror or any other newspaper.

The two denominations I know, oh yes.

She added: 'I don't know how he knows what picture I've got, I've never met him. Literally nobody in any sort of official capacity has been in touch with me or anyone else in the village, no follow up at all, even now, from the police who had my number when I reported it to 999, so it's just very odd

From the farmer.

Is that odd?

fancythat Mon 28-Sept-26 22:16:08

Ah. Forget the above post of mine please. Wrong thread!

Maremia Mon 28-Sept-26 22:20:55

Church Leaders are left wing? I wonder what the Pastors of that Christian Church in Drumcree would have to say about that?

No, it isn't.

I was gifted (in the manner of the way Sleeping Beauty was gifted her curse) a year's subscription to the Telegraph, and read it every day for that miserable year. I could fully understand why so many younger women on MN and elsewhere were suffering MH issues because of fear for their children. It is a massively downbeat and fear-inspiring paper. There were constant warnings of war, famine and pestilence, and no attempt at balance. Should it matter, the year I had it was during a recent Tory government - I can't remember the actual year, but it was within the last five.

I was relieved when the subscription ended, and not because the editorials were counter to my usual beliefs. I am more than capable of accepting different viewpoints, and this wasn't about that at all. It was the fear-mongering that annoyed me.

All newspapers are heavily biased.

Oreo Mon 28-Sept-26 22:24:53

What do you think can be done, if anything, about the conditions imposed on some Muslim women in the UK by their Leaders and menfolk, as outlined in the article in the OP?

Maybe. But in that case why aren't quotes from them acknowledging that?

The headline about left-wing conspiracy has to be taken in context, surely?

The journalist obviously thinks it is a left wing conspiracy of sorts and I get what she means.

What can be done about conditions imposed on some muslim women by their leaders and menfolk ? Isn’t this something the Muslim community can change, if they want to. The uk is a more secular country because that’s what the majority has wanted. Whether this is an overall good thing is another interesting discussion

Doodledog Tue 29-Sept-26 06:14:00

I don’t think this is a religious issue so much as a racial one, and I also think the objections are based on race rather than religion. Until that is recognised I doubt that much can be done.

I know many Muslim women, and none cover completely. I dare say that few ‘western’ women will know extremely religious Muslim women of the sort who segregate, so we don’t hear their viewpoints or those of their men.
