112
The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

while stationary on the road
when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am

except when another road user poses a danger.

Thankyou.
Can’t remember when I last sounded the horn.

Wyllow3 Sun 28-Jul-24 10:46:46

I cant recall either when but on this I broke the guidelines I think, it was when someone cut in on me very dangerously I was forced to brake, but the situation had ready happened.

Georgesgran Sun 28-Jul-24 10:51:49

Yes - I am aware.

However, this morning it didn’t stop me honking aggressively at the idiot who turned right (to exit 3) from the near side lane of a roundabout and almost wrote me off! The exits roads are clearly marked and once turned, the driver knew the way to McDonalds.

My neighbours relatives sound the horn and wave when leaving, irritating.

is there a reason you think we may not be aware of this rule?

OK

I think a lot of people either don't know that rule or choose not to comply with it.
People who use their horn in traffic jams because they are annoyed.
People who have to beep their horn to say goodbye as they leave.
People who allow their children to use the horn as a toy and drive neighbours mad.

Why are you asking this?

Is it random fact day today 🤷

RosiesMaw2 Sun 28-Jul-24 17:58:46

Slow news day today, Infoman ?

infoman Sun 28-Jul-24 18:58:38

Not really,I was car less for the last few days and walking about and sitting on various bus stops and bus's,and hearing the amount of horns being blown, including the bus driver/s.
Its just unbelievable, when you have drivers who have those ear plug things, so what their listening too goes straight down their ear holes, not to mention those who don't know where the up/down window handle is.

I’m sure there are lots of rules from the Highway Code I can’t quote and may inadvertently break, its many years since I revised that book.

That really really annoys me too!

Infoman You must be unlucky where you live. Car horns are not a problem in my neck of the woods.

Is this something of an obsession OP?

1 April 2022 Why do drivers sound the horn to vent their anger?

1 April 2023 Only fools beep their horn

1 April 2024 Only fools beep their horns

And now today.

What happened?
Did somebody beep their horn at you?

NotAGran55 Sun 28-Jul-24 22:00:01

Being beeped at was part of everyday life if I remember correctly - ‘back in the day’.

Did you ever do it Infoman?

infoman Mon 29-Jul-24 04:23:29

Is there not enough noise pollution in the World?
Lets not add to it unnecessarily when it can be avoided.

I miss my car now I’m no longer driving due to a left handed stroke
I loved driving and I would drive to Edinburgh and Glasgow for work meetings however that bit was horrendous I preferred to drive more local

Worthingpatchworker Mon 29-Jul-24 11:55:20

Otherwise known as ‘an audible warning instrument’…..

My neighbours have electric gates with a key pad outside for the entrance code. On very regular occasions someone drives up to their property and sits in the car honking the horn until someone inside the house opens the gates for them to drive in. This usually takes more than a couple of minutes of constant blaring. They visit so frequently that I imagine they could be given the gate code or else maybe they're just too lazy to switch off their engine and get out of the car to use the code. Now that's annoying!

Missiseff Mon 29-Jul-24 12:35:09

Oh dear. I use mine in anger.

Rusume Mon 29-Jul-24 12:36:57

Cant rrmember the last time I used my horn until yesterday. I was behind a driver at temporary traffic lights and they turned green. Instead of going forwards he started rolling backwards as we were on an incline! Fortunately there was enough room between us and he realised as soon as I used my horn. Phew!

One of my main memories of India is the traffic noise of drivers honking all the time.

Ditto Naples at rush hour!
