I do like the Tesco one but have only seen that and the M & S one so far.

They’re fun to watch but my niece says they just make her feel even more inadequate because she can’t afford stuff on her wages. I wish they didn’t start till December, but everyone who is already half organised is a potential customer who they want to catch when they start their early shopppng. So I suppose we only have ourselves to blame.

Do not like John Lewis Christmas ad yet again being fed a cultural change

Myym Fri 10-Nov-17 11:13:16

I've just laughed watching the new Aldi advert, they have continued with the Carrots again this year. I love to look for the little effects that make up the picture.....the Carrot reading a book, the title of which is '9 1/2 Leeks'

So far M&S are in the lead have just seen the JL ad not very impressed same concept as last year but with a monster they seem to have lost their way and are no longer THE xmas ad to watch.

Lillie Fri 10-Nov-17 11:27:02

Brilliant JL advert, yes, along the same themes as in previous years but still delightful and the cinematography is amazing!

It isn't the cost of making the advert that's so expensive, it's the TV air time they are paying for. They need to launch the department store's Christmas merchandise before they bring on the Waitrose Christmas food adverts next month.

Vampire queen you have just made my day. I followed your YouTube link and DH and I have been sitting on the sofa together looking at Peter Kay on the iPad and crying laughing.

harrigran Fri 10-Nov-17 12:03:57

These adverts seem to be aimed at middle class families, I can't begin to imagine how awful poorer families must feel.

harrigran Fri 10-Nov-17 12:08:43

Take back what I have just said, just seen the Boots advert and it is an ordinary, northern family featured in the film.

Smithy Fri 10-Nov-17 12:26:52

Sorry but hate the John Lewis one, too scary! Hate the Debenhams one, too mawkish! Don't mind the Aldi one but a bit bit boring.
The Jury's out on the M and S one.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 10-Nov-17 12:33:46

I love the Aldi one. That joke about peas always makes me giggle. grin

I think it's a shame that M&S have been so blatant in going with Paddington just when the new film is due out. I like the JL one, but not as much as some in previous years. The others I've seen are a bit meh.

GracesGranMK2.
In the word/s of the late and the GREAT,EricMorcambe,
Rubbish.

radicalnan Fri 10-Nov-17 12:58:33

Not exactly full of the Christmas spirit are we, squabbling away about the mawkish , manipulations on offer to make us buy stuff we really don't need.

Early days yet half the nation won't be on speaking terms by Boxing day.......

matson Fri 10-Nov-17 13:24:29

Liking the aldi one best so far, JL is good also, but not keen on m/s Paddington ad.

kathyd Fri 10-Nov-17 13:57:58

There's been much comment elsewhere about the fact that the Tesco ad features Muslims, Sikhs, what seems to be a gay couple with a child, but no indication of Christianity apart from a tiny Star of Bethlehem in the far background.
None of them do anything apart from promote commercialism.

Sheilasue Fri 10-Nov-17 14:31:43

The J hon Lewis ad was on good morning Britain this morning (Friday 10) apparently it cost 7 million and was made with an Oscar winning director. Who I don’t know.
Lot of dosh. Was sweet though.

BlueBelle Fri 10-Nov-17 15:28:29

Sheilasue that’s says it all really 7 million for the comment ‘well it is sweet though’ ?

Aslemma Fri 10-Nov-17 15:53:52

I haven't seen many of them but absolutely hate the Currys one. The look of horror on the children's faces when mum says they are going to have a tradional which changes to joy when she says they are only kidding and takes them to see the big TV they have bought. Very definitely bah humbug

Lillie Fri 10-Nov-17 16:11:10

£7 million may seem like a huge amount, but what we have to remember is that for every £1 spent on advertising £6 is returned to the UK economy. Think of all the people employed in the advertising industry and its knock on activities.

If anyone has ever lived abroad and watched the awful adverts on foreign TV, mainly centred around washing powders and yoghurts, then you would have to agree that the UK leads the field in this industry. I agree with GracesGran on page 1 that new technology in cinematography puts us right at the top of this industry, as does our clever use of British music in adverts which undoubtedly helps draws emotional responses too.

Every business sets aside an agreed amount of money for its advertising and marketing. I would start to question the success of a company if it were to withdraw its advertising or to cut back on its spending.

pollyperkins Fri 10-Nov-17 16:26:30

Im not usually keen on these things but I do like the M&S Paddington ad. It's the only one Ive seen so far. Haven't really liked any of the John Lewis ones in past years.

Tegan2 Fri 10-Nov-17 16:48:09

I think the JL one will give two of my grandchildren nightmares sad. And possibly the third one, too,,,

grammargran Fri 10-Nov-17 16:48:36

I really think I must be thick, watched the JL advert on FB this lunchtime and it’s gone completely over my head, what on earth is it about? It goes from monsters under the bed to hair cuts at the barber’s, falling asleep against a goal post, need I go on? Or there again, perhaps it’s just me ..........

RAF Fri 10-Nov-17 16:53:57

Really disappointed in the JL one this year, I thought last year's was brilliant, really made me laugh and didn't seem to be selling anything. This one is too scary for the little ones, and the little boy still ends up with a monster under his bed, doesn't make sense. M and S okay, but nothing to get me in teh Christmas spirit!

tessagee Fri 10-Nov-17 18:19:22

I like Morrison's advert regarding gluten free food best, lovely and endearing, though perhaps other folk won't agree. Wasn't impressed by the John Lewis or M&S adverts and haven't seen any others.

pollyperkins Fri 10-Nov-17 18:27:04

I like the m& s one as i think (correct me if Im wrong) Paddington is stopping a burglar stealing presents by naively thinking he's Santa and 'delivering' the presents ie putting them back until the burglar is ashamed of himself. That brought a tear to my eye. Didn't understand the bit with the sleigh really! The bit when he sees the children opening presents is ok but a bit sentimental. But I did think it illustrated the spirit of Christmas ie giving not receiving. And the present we saw wasnt hugely expensive.

GracesGranMK2 Fri 10-Nov-17 18:36:06

Do you mean the one where the little boys okay food was on green plates tessagee? I loved that.

I think there are still some of this years to come.

I believe that M & S has brought out a book to accompany the advert - all profits to charity. I like that too.
