Just watched the John Lewis Christmas Advert ?????

Good publicity for Elton John

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 15:19:21

We haven't got a piano now

I want one

grin

No, l didn’t like it. I wondered how much they had paid him, given they are struggling as a company, and thought that as he has had a difficult relationship with his Mom, that the whole ad was a bit odd.

Blue Belle Just what I was going to say of the banned Iceland ad. It even carries a message that doesn't say ' Spend, spend, get into debt, pay it back later, buying stuff that people don't need'
I shall certainly go and investigate ICELAND. as for John Lewis, I have not been so impressed for several reasons.
Interestingly, nor was management when I tried to approach then

Great minds, Sparklefizz. grin

Maggiemaybe You beat me to it!

Maggiemaybe Fri 16-Nov-18 13:39:51

Sorry, I hadn’t noticed that you’d mentioned the reconciliation.

Sparklefizz Fri 16-Nov-18 13:39:43

Lilyflower I am trying to be fair ..... We have no idea what went on between him and his mother. Were you there? I wasn't. Perhaps he was horrible, or they were both horrible, or both too alike? It was said that she didn't like his husband, which is a story we often read here on GN. Apparently they were reconciled for several years before she died.

I'm sure he does have a flamboyant and difficult temperament. Many creative people do.

It doesn't take away from the fact that he has talent, he must have put in years and years of piano practice which I know I couldn't personally be a*sed to do, he has written musical, not only pop songs, and in giving his name to this advert, he has raised money for charity.... that's the £5 million you mention that you "can only suppose" has gone to him. You're wrong. And as mentioned before, in 2004 he gave $43 million to charity so he's a pretty generous kind of guy whatever you think of him personally.

I find I am defending him on here when I never thought of myself as a huge fan, but I do like some of his music, especially "Your Song", I do think he's a showman, and I do like the advert. I don't envy him his wealth or feel the need to make snide comments. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and this is mine. smile

They were reconciled for several years before his mum died though, Lilyflower, and really none of us can know what caused the split. The papers made much of her not leaving him any cash in her will, but she probably guessed he wasn’t short of a bob or two. grin

DH and I saw him a few years back at a football stadium (I love a showman!) and really enjoyed it. Even though the heavens opened and those of us who’d bought the posh seats on the pitch got drenched.

Lilyflower Fri 16-Nov-18 13:12:34

of, not os

Lilyflower Fri 16-Nov-18 13:12:23

I seem to rememeber Elton John slighted and rejected his adoring mother on very trivial grounds for about a decade in a very cruel manner. They have recently been reconciled but his poor behaviour towards the woman who gave him birth and who always supported him makes the empahasis on his mother in the ad a tad hypocritical.

The advertisement reportedly cost £5million and since it consisted of a series of past films edited together I can only suppose much of the money went to the star.

The little lad at the end os the ad is a darling.

Sparklefizz Fri 16-Nov-18 13:02:11

And for all those who think it's a boring advert, just don't watch it and go and put the kettle on when it's shown. Simple! grin

Sparklefizz Fri 16-Nov-18 13:01:09

BlueBelle & lilipollen Obviously you're entitled to your opinions but it does mean that the charities will be getting £5million they might not have got, which can only be a good thing, can't it?

Willow10 Fri 16-Nov-18 13:00:28

grin

lilypollen Fri 16-Nov-18 12:57:24

Free publicity for a multi-millionaire.

BlueBelle Fri 16-Nov-18 12:46:41

..... but that doesn’t make it anything other than a boring advert just promoting him

Sparklefizz Fri 16-Nov-18 12:39:44

I don't think we can criticise Elton's generosity, even though no doubt several whingers will say he can afford it .... and yes, he can, but many in his situation hang on to it.

"Elton John Charity Work, Events and Causes

The singer also gives large amounts of his personal wealth to charity. In 2004 he donated over $43 million to organizations around the world, making him the most generous person in music for that year – a title he retains year after year."

Sparklefizz Fri 16-Nov-18 12:32:07

Why is everyone banging on about pianos? Grrr! The ad doesn't have to be taken literally. The message is just that your present may lead on to greater things.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 16-Nov-18 12:27:59

Have seen Elton John several times in 70/80’s - he was a fabulous showman.

I had my first “slow dance” to Your Song, so I am probably biased to like this advert ????

Lollin Fri 16-Nov-18 11:55:48

That made me laugh bmacca especially at the end of the link

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 11:49:41

Nanny41 the themee tune to Corrie has changed too I m told it’s in honour of the piano playing Elton ?but have no idea if that’s true and if so why ?

Margs Fri 16-Nov-18 11:46:32

I HAVE been to an Elton John concert, actually, Jalimall08 - someone decided to 'treat' me as a surprise for a birthday. Jaysus, the stupid things "friends" do to you sometimes......I still don't know why I deserved to have Prima Donna Elton inflicted on me.

Nanny41 Fri 16-Nov-18 11:40:39

Nothing to do with this thread but why has the theme tune to Emmerdale changed, that cant be anything to do with the John Lewis advert surely, its a mystery to me.

Iam64 Fri 16-Nov-18 11:35:55

Whinge means to Complain - this side of the world.
