Just watched the John Lewis Christmas Advert ?????

Good publicity for Elton John

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 11:35:23

The posters themselves admit to the ad making them cry (whinge)

Whinging, where I come from, means crying.

More criticism of John Lewis from Jay Raynor in the Guardian. He may have a point? My brother always took my favourites

GabriellaG - you accusing others of whinging is a real gransnet Classic.

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 11:22:27

I'm not crying, but I do think the message is good.
But then we have two musicians in the family - so going through the plonking, the screeching violin in the early days etc was worth it.

Gonegirl Fri 16-Nov-18 11:22:18

Liking it more each time I watch it. It's heading the JL website. Of course.

BlueBelle Fri 16-Nov-18 11:21:02

Margs not marks wouldn’t it be lovely to have an EDIT BUTTON sigh has anyone ever suggested this to GN ?????

Gonegirl Fri 16-Nov-18 11:20:58

That child has no idea of the piano lessons, with scales, he's got in front of him.

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 11:18:59

What a lot of whingers on here.
If a cardboardy ad featuring a camp clown can make women cry...I give up.

GabriellaG Fri 16-Nov-18 11:17:04

Crap
Clunky
Cringeworthy
Cheesy
Cheerless
Crucifyingly...awful.grin

I suspect JL will do very well with their sales of keyboards. One of our grandchildren seems to have the musical gene. The ad prompted his mother to search on the village facebook page for piano's for sale.
It's so sad the music (and drama, art etc) are being taken out of the curriculum. If this ad prompts a few parents to encourage their children to play an instrument, or possibly buy a science kit, riding hat, swimming goggles - you name it, anything to encourage hobbies in our children, how can that be a bad thing?

Magrithea Fri 16-Nov-18 11:11:13

There's been some comment elsewhere that it's part of a trailer for a film about him, loved the ad though. Saw him last year in Vegas and he was a-maz-ing!!

GoldenAge Fri 16-Nov-18 11:10:53

Great ad - will bring tears to the eyes of every grandmother with a piano-playing grandson - seen it theee times now and tears each time - such clever advertising

Nanny123 Fri 16-Nov-18 11:04:39

I liked the advert but does Elton really need all that money for doing it - what an impact it would have given if he had donated it to charity

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 10:52:10

I expect other retailers will supply loads of tat if that's what some people want.
No-one has to go to JL and buy a keyboard/piano

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 10:51:02

erstwhile pub piano player
grin have you ever heard him play in concert Margs?
Obviously not.

Craftycat Fri 16-Nov-18 10:49:37

I was a big Elton fan in the 70's- he was great live but never much liked Your Song.
I don't really see that the ad. is much to do with Christmas apart from the fact he gets a piano as a present.
Very disappointed.
GoneGirl- I think the BoRap one was an ad for the film
( which is brilliant BTW!)

BlueBelle Fri 16-Nov-18 10:48:13

Wasn’t Gareth Malone the one who was trying to encourage music in schools don’t ever remember Elton John doing anything or being involved in schools

Marks don’t forget the years of cocaine useage along with the dress up and wigs

Margs Fri 16-Nov-18 10:38:47

I've still to work out how erstwhile pub piano player and joke wig wearer Elton John somehow deserves a knighthood just for singing one re-hashed song at Princess Diana's funeral......

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 10:37:08

Much better to buy a keyboard, even if all the family clubs together, than a load of tat.

Jalima1108 Fri 16-Nov-18 10:34:34

Brilliant Lisagran

The teaching of music has been subject to cut backs in schools so the more we can encourage tomorrow's musicians the better!

Anniebach Fri 16-Nov-18 10:29:01

ooops sorry , meant nitpicker accuser not snowflake accuser

Lisagran Fri 16-Nov-18 10:25:30

Apparently JL now selling pianos “inspired by our advert” !!

Anniebach Fri 16-Nov-18 10:21:40

Where is the snowflake accuser ? ?

jenni123 Fri 16-Nov-18 10:19:57

Hated it, really hated it. More like an ad for Elton john and not at all Christmassy, certainly not what we have come to expect from John Lewis as a Christmas ad. Plus changing the theme tunes to several programmes, must have cost J L a lot of money. Can't believe it has made me so uptight, after all it IS only a TV advert, but it has made me feel this way
