Sorting through the freezer (making room for Christmas goodies) I have come across some mince pies from last year . Should I risk defrosting and eating them or just throw them away?
This thread reminds me that when friends came round a couple of months ago, someone asked for a Martini Rosso, DH found a bottle in our drinks cupboard unopened and poured a glass, friend sipped and said it was lovely, DH went to put bottle back in cupboard and saw a price tag on the bottle, saying ‘Sainsbury £1.89’! We checked, it now costs around £10! At least it wasn’t pre-decimal! And btw friend is fine!
Eat them. Even if they have "gone off" I don't think there is anything than can make you ill. It's not meat or fish. Anything with a large sugar content is fine, the sugar acts as a preservative, like salt. I've very often eaten cakes and puddings, bacon or gammon past it's sell by date with no ill effect, unless of course I have caste iron guts?
Oh of course eat them they will be fine When it comes to shop bought I take absolutely no notice of dates if they smell ok and texture looks ok they re good to go in my tum Why waste food ?
I found 2 Christmas puddings at the back of a cupboard with BB date April 2019! We opened one and tried it the other night and it was lovely, and we lived to tell the tale. We'll be keeping the other one for Christmas this year!*
We've eaten one this year with a best before 2016.
I found bread only kept for a few weeks in the freezer, so now I made a double batch of dough, bake half and freeze the other half when the dough has proved.
Didn’t they unearth some food in the Antarctic that was left over from Scott’s polar expedition.many many years after that happened? It was still edible I believe.
The only risk I see is that you might throw away perfectly good mince pies for not tasting them. Try one and then decide. You aren't going to get food poisoning.
