Have yourself a merry little Christmas....er

I know what you mean! I have a reasonably easy piano arrangement of it, dished out by the teacher in my group class a couple of years ago. I’d never known the words before, but they’re so poignant, especially now, and especially with the lovely melody. (Particularly when I manage to get the pedalling right as well as hitting all the right notes!)

All Christmas music can have me emotional.

The lyrics of this lovely song always get to me. And they caused me to have a very embarrassing episode a few
years ago. I went to a concert of Christmas music in Exeter Cathedral and the choir sang this song. I could feel myself welling up and then suddenly burst into tears and cried. Not just a little bit but great sobbing noisy crying. I was mortified, but the people around me were so kind and I eventually managed to stop. Someone close to me was very ill with cancer at the time and he died a month later.

I've never forgotten seeing a film on TV where an American army deserter was shot by firing squad.. It was set in a snow-covered background, he was tied to a stake, the black hood placed on his head and shot.
All throughout Frankie was quietly singing "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
One of those scenes that's never left me.

I can well imagine doing similar in such circumstances, henetha. One date that’s etched forever on my brain, though it was a long time ago now, was the 10th December when my mother phoned, in tears, to say the GP had just told her that my father was dying.
He died exactly a month later.
It was a sad, subdued Christmas that year, but since my father was always a very cheerful, jolly type, I was determined not to let that memory overshadow later Christmases - it was the last thing he’d ever have wanted.

That's so sad, Witzend. It's somehow worse when these sad events happen around Christmas. This Christmas will be difficult for many I think, so let's hope next year will be better.

It’s one of my favourite piano murder victims too, and I dare say it will bring tears to my eyes when I am playing it this year, especially if we are destined to be here on our own. Maybe I’ll give it a miss.

Rufus the Bodach always spoke of that scene, but could never remember the name of the film, so much so that we all thought he was imagining it!
Imagine his delight when someone told him the film did indeed exist, and was called ‘ The Victors’.

I really will make a Proper Effort with it, once Christmas is out of the way...

Similar feelings to you Witzend and it was years before I could ever join in singing ‘Should auld acquaintance be forgot’ on NYE gatherings with family. I just used to well up every time, thinking of my lovely dad who died at the tender age of 47y.

When I was 18 Val Doonican was singing this on tv when I came home two days before Christmas having been dumped by my then boyfriend.

The ‘Bodach’ is my late husband. ‘Am Bodach’ is gaelic for the old man.

I've always found that song, no matter who it's sung by, rather sad/poignant.

It always has me in tears. This year more than ever. I remember telling 2019 to sod off on NYE thinking, 2020 has got to be better.
