Christmas

A Christmas Day Memory that happened 81 years ago this year.

Christmas Day 1940 was a stark time but it was quiet from the bombs for once and we were living in the Anderson shelter by his time because our house had been bombed.
I wrote the following poem about that particular Christmas Day and it depicts the fierce community spirit that everyone felt at that time.

A CHRISTMAS DAY MEMORY.

I sit and ponder about a certain Christmas Day many years ago
I remember very plainly of having no home and no place to go.
The year was nineteen forty in the middle of the London Blitz
Jerry pounding us with bombs, he tried hard to break the Brits

We finished up in our air-raid shelter to keep us from the cold
Listening to the bombs dropping down as hell began to unfold.
Christmas was fast approaching but no presents were in sight
It was dangerous for Santa to travel in the war stricken night.

At least that was what I was told by my fourteen-year-old brother!
No stocking put up for a Christmas, just comforting each other.
Christmas Day dawned and the firemen were so tired and weary
This did not deter them, they battled on as they remained cheery.

Along came a water cart at last to get water for a cup of Rosie Lee
How would the British survive without their cup of cheering tea?
We managed to have a quick wash to greet that Christmas morning
In case we were bombed again and had to heed the air-raid warning.

But it remained quiet, a deathly hush that seemed to envelop us all
A Christmas Day that remained in my memory that I can well recall.
It was like sitting on the edge of a volcano just waiting for it to erupt
Suddenly the sound of voices was heard the silence it did interrupt.

A radio was playing and the choristers were singing a rousing song
Many joined in the chorus as the voices made us all feel strong.
For those who have never witnessed a moving scene such as this
I thank the Lord! It was something that I would not have missed

I have never had that feeling of awe since that fateful day long ago
A kindred spirit amid a city razed that brought forth a certain glow
Of pride and joy that existed for a short time as we all started to sing
A song called “Santa Claus is coming to town” with voices in full swing

It is many years since that awesome day and I give thanks I am still alive
I very often wonder how through all that hell we managed to survive.
I hope and pray it will never happen again to any future generations
And may everyone be thankful as they enjoy their happy celebrations.

Many thanks Zoejory and Sweetpeasue but I think there would have to be more folks interested in living history before the Gransnet Admin decided to add a writers or poetry section.
IF they did I would put a chapter up each day from the book I had published that takes the reader through me being illtreated in a so called Sisters-of-Mercy home and through the horrendous war years, plus the post war years up to my farcical cockney wedding day in 1949.
Take care.

Maywalk is that book available to buy? ?

*Pity there isn't a writers and poetry section on here*

That's a good point. Maybe GN HQ could look at putting the topic on?

I'd be very interested to read your work

I would be too Maywalk.

Thank you for sharing your lovely poem Maywalk.

Many thanks ladies.

Pity there isn't a writers and poetry section on here.

Many tales to tell starting in the 1930s and any poetry I have written are true tales put into verse including those about animals and children.

I am no good at fiction.

Keep smiing everyone.

Thank you - you're never too old for GN

Never too old. Fancy making such a mistake when addressing a writer

PollyTickle Mon 01-Nov-21 09:16:05

Maywalk, I’m another who would be sad to see you leave. You give so much pleasure to us all with your beautiful poetry, your poignant writings and with your hilarious jokes on other threads that have me in stitches.
You are never to old Maisie Walker, no such thing.
Stay a while and entertain us.
Please.

Zoejory Sun 31-Oct-21 22:09:37

Not too old at for GN!

I thought your post was lovely. Reminded me of my mother who had been a child during WWII in London. She told many a tale of how they coped. I wish she'd written them down.

Sweetpeasue

Oh don't go Maywalk . Your words are very valuable to us all.
My father was in the army in the second world war. The British Legion draped the Union Jack flag over his coffin in 1977 at his funeral. So much respect. His birthday was 9th November so this time of year is poignant for me. He was lucky he lived through it when many did not.
Lest we Forget.

That is lovely to read Sweetpeasue and reminded me of this poem I wrote some time go

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

Remember all those who have fallen in wars within these last hundred years
Leaving behind their loved ones to grieve and shed their heartbroken tears.
Many thousands buried in other countries and some without a known grave
Sacrificing their lives fighting for freedom so that our lives they could save.

Remember as you go about your daily routine what they all endured for you
And remember them all with pride in your heart in everything that you do.
Husbands, lovers, brothers, sons or uncle who lost his life in his freedom fight
They helped to quell the enemy and to bring the world hope and a ray of light.

So each and every one of them were heroes who are remembered on this day
And may the good Lord keep them in his care and help the sorrow go away.
I wear my poppy with pride as I remember all nations that fought and died
They took on a mammoth task of freedom for all from which they never shied.

My poppy is a token of my deepest respect for all who gave me a full life
As well as those who fought in other wars to stem any ongoing strife.
YES I am very proud to wear my poppy on this future Remembrance Day
God Bless the souls of all who lost their lives in any world wide affray.

Remember also the loyalty and heroism of all the animals used in wars
Such as Elephants, Horses and even Giraffes many with four paws
Pigeons too played a big part in carrying messages across the sea
Too tell of various places where enemy forces and weapons could be.

Two minutes of your time to pay homage to brave men and animals too
To reflect on the horrors of bloody wars and what they all went through.

Many more memories Muse all put into books and proceeds after printing costs taken out going to various charities.
There is one book that takes the reader through the first 20 years of my life from 1930 to 1949 that has sold worldwide and still selling because it is, as they say, living history.
Take care.

I hope for the same as you Maywalk. Thank you for putting all your memories into such a touching poem.

Oh. You're never too old for Gransnet.

Maywalk Sun 31-Oct-21 20:06:18

Thanks everyone.
I think I may be a bit too old to be a member of Gransnet and think it would perhaps be better for me to concentrate on my writings and poems.
God Bless All.

It still brings back that wonderful feeling of camaraderie that was abundant then whether rich or poor.
Never had that feeling since the post war years finished.
