Heard the Jonah Lewie song ‘Stop The Cavalry’ on the radio this morning. I remarked to DH that it was one song I didn’t like at the time, and still don’t!

Is it the tune, ‘du du, dududu, du du ….’ the words, the singer?

Don’t know, but certainly not in my top ten.

Your name just reminded me. smile

That so boring partridge in a pear tree (Twelve days of Christmas?)

I love Boney M Christmas songs!

I do get tired of Mariah Carey, and I really dislike the Madonna version of Santa Baby.

I admit to liking most Christmas music, but get a bit bored by actual Christmas. Although I do wish they would play a few after Christmas. Do your radio stations stop any Christmas music as of midnight on Christmas Day? Ours are right back to regular programming on Boxing Day, when I'm still feeling in the holiday mode.

Remember going to a secondary school Carol Service when I was about 10. The choir sang The 12 Days Of Christmas, and certain sections stood up to sing their ‘bit’, then sat down, and the next lot popped up, lots of standing up and sitting down. It went on like that throughout the song. They did it really well, and I was so impressed!

At the end of term I used to persuade colleagues to have their class take on a verse each from The Twelve Days. On the last day of term before Christmas, we would “perform” it with each group enacting their verse, with suitable costumes and props, where possible. My favourite memory is of when three of my Y6 boys dressed up as three French hens, complete with make up and feather boas! (their interpretation!) ???

I have to say, though, the mere hint of a school nativity play reduces me to tears these days. blush

Many Infant teachers feel the same at this time of year…..!

My favourite has to be Marys Boy Child by Boney M, I dislike anything by Cliff Richards and John Lennon.

Billybob4491 Tue 07-Dec-21 07:44:12

I think the Wombles did a Christmas song as well - ghastly.

Georgesgran Tue 07-Dec-21 08:04:13

Thanks Maggiemay. Battery died before I could reply about Little Drummer Boy.

I was never keen on Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas until our group piano teacher gave us a not-too-difficult version to play - with the words, which I’d never bothered to listen to. I really like it now.

Can’t stand Fairytale in New York The Pogues so depressing or Driving home for Christmas Chris Reah
Love Last Christmas Wham and Stay another day East 17
But it’s not Christmas without Slade and Wizzard

Love Last Christmas Wham

Have you seen the film, rosie1959?

Not of Wham singing, but the film called Last Christmas.
I will say no more.

No not seen that film although I don’t mind a sing along with Slade I am not keen on Christmas films

Hetty58 Tue 07-Dec-21 08:38:07

All of them! My heart really sinks, every year, when the songs start, on TV ads, the radio and in shops, so early, too early (often before it's even December). Then there's the films, too. I find it all so sickening, depressing, not cheering.

Mistletoe and wine is the one I don't like.

Anything by Cliff Richard and I’m turning off.

Dee1012 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:13:37

Slade, Cliff Richard and Wizzard....loathe them!

Actually I dislike most except Greg Lake - I believe in Father Christmas, I love these words;

"I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave new year
All anguish, pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear"

Germanshepherdsmum Tue 07-Dec-21 11:15:37

I like the song and music from The Snowman. And I still like the film too!

MissAdventure Tue 07-Dec-21 11:17:47

Me too.
It's a lovely little film. smile

sazz1 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:23:09

Baby please come home, lonely this Christmas as they are sad.
Also little drummer boy as its connected to Hindley and Brady and what they recorded as background music

Alioop Tue 07-Dec-21 11:25:51

The Pogues Christmas song and I know I'm probably the only one. Trisha57 I've the Phil Spector Christmas one too and I love it.

Tetty Tue 07-Dec-21 11:27:33

It's in my top ten hates along with mistletoe and winewine

Ali08 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:29:31

Wham! Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart - well by all accounts, you shouldn't still be singing but unfortunately you are and I HATE THAT SONG GRRRRRRRR

Nanny27 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:30:50

I love ‘ A spaceman came travelling’.
The radio rarely plays it which, in some ways is nice as it never seems to get stale and certainly doesn’t seem to make it on to the dreaded supermarket loops.

Jenn53 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:31:56

Can't stand Mistletoe & Wine....urgh!!

I love 2000 Miles by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders which was released in the 80s. It is very sad & Christmassy. I also love most of the classic traditional Christmas Carols which all remind me of my childhood. Oh, & Elton John's "Step into Christmas" which always cheers me up if I am feeling down.

jaylucy Tue 07-Dec-21 11:35:02

Mary's Boy Child - yuck - although I do remember singing it in Primary School!
Another no is Little Drummer Boy - apart from the Bing Crosby/David Bowie version!
The Jona Louis one is depressing! Oh, and can't stand Pipes of Peace or Mull of Kintire!
If you work in retail, the constant carols just become a background noise after the first half hour, and first 6 weeks ,believe me !

Justanotherwannabe Tue 07-Dec-21 11:44:25

The Pogues. I like the tune, but did you ever listen to the words!

Lulubelle500 Tue 07-Dec-21 11:47:12

The Little Drummer Boy. Ever since I read the Moors murderers used to play it while they were committing their unspeakable crimes.
