Put any lights or decor up yet?

Musicgirl Wed 23-Nov-22 16:52:57

Definitely not. It will be mid-December here but my autistic son has two Christmas trees full of lights in his flat.

Mine going up this Sunday, Advent Sunday.

I used to leave it until later but some years ago decided to enjoy the anticipation for a month. 🎄

I have decided smile

I am starting christmas on dec 1st. All the decs are in my living room now, lurking behind the sofa, I have a wooden scandi tree in there and beautiful ornaments and I can start opening my sewing advent calendar. A treat a day

I had no christmas last year, had to sit amongst rooms prepped for decorating, which lasted for six months. I want christmas cheer this year.

I am not buying anything at all, various reasons but I have a few edible bits to enjoy and that is enough.

No never do, have a Granddaughter whose birthday is early in December so, to keep that special, we never decorate until after her celebration has ended

timetogo2016 Wed 23-Nov-22 19:52:46

A big fat no,cards only in this house.

My DH picked a sunny day last week to put up the outdoor lights, but they won't be turned on until Dec 1. We have them on a timer to go on from 5:00 - 11:00 pm.

All my bits an bobs for decor will start to come out then, and some may go up, but the tree doesn't get put up until around the 15th. We get a real tree, sold by the Rotary club, so they get the value of the donation.

I love Christmas - but not too much of it!

I won’t usually play carols until 1st December, but I’ve succumbed already to the King’s College choir on YouTube. Plus Gds was singing In The Bleak Midwinter to me the other day - they’re learning it for their Nativity play - which I won’t be able to watch 🙁 - no spare tickets for grannies.

However there’s a lovely pub right opposite the lovely old church where they’re having it, so I dare say Dsis (visiting from the US) and I will console ourselves there with a mulled wine or 2, while we wait for them.

I love Christmas and will have tree no 1 up on 1st Dec.
My DD’s both have their trees up and I think each to their own and it’s hurts no one and cheers people up ! 👍❤️

I’ve got the sprouts on though!

We put the Christmas Tree up this p.m. I helped the housekeeper to do it and had no idea how fiddly it was to get it looking good. It is an artificial tree because it is too hot for traditional ones.
We put it up because friends are over from Antigua and so we are having a party to welcome them. I am watching I am A Celebrity is doing the trial and Jill is doing it. I am hoping she wins. She is an amazing woman!

I still work on the timescale that I grew up with, the decs go up on the last Saturday before Christmas Eve, and stay up until Twelth Night. Any earlier and I'm sure I would be sick and tired of them before Christmas. From what I see of modern children, there is no real excitement about Christmas like we had, certainly no acknowledgement of the origin of Christmas, it is just a frenzy of "I Want" and "Gimme Gimme". I'm horrified each year that shops seem to have Christmas on sale earlier and earlier. This year I saw decorations on sale by the beginning of September. Oh for the Real Spirit of Christmas again.

4allweknow Wed 23-Nov-22 22:57:27

Far too early. 6 weeks of twinkling tinsel, no thank you. Out tonight and did see a house with the dreaded flashing icicles (why do they need to flash and not just gently change) and an array of reindeer, Santas and goodness knows what else all lit up at 6.30 pm.

Redhead56 Wed 23-Nov-22 22:58:14

I usually put the tree up two weeks before Christmas. We have had a very difficult year because of health issues.
I have decided the tree is going up on the 1st of December to lighten our spirits.

hilz Wed 23-Nov-22 23:48:18

Not for us in our house but admit that there are a few garden displays popping up around about that are starting to get me quite Christmassy.

Wyllow3 Thu 24-Nov-22 00:08:08

Yes inasmuch as I have draped some twinkly lights across the mantelpiece in the living room to cheer these gloomy days. Not sure I even see them as Christmas as such.

I have a live Christmas Tree 3 years old and so healthy fresh green bits and that will be maybe 7 days before Christmas as it can't be indoors too long as I want it to see age 4..

Witzend Thu 24-Nov-22 10:11:19

Dd and SiL ‘rented’ a real tree last year. They got it quite early in December and by the time they took it back, it was sprouting new green growth.
They’re supposed to be having the same one again this year - fetching it on 3rd Dec (plenty of time for little Gdcs to enjoy it) but it was already a big one, so I do wonder whether it’s going to fit under their ceiling!

SachaMac Thu 24-Nov-22 10:12:23

I have just taken my Autumn leaf lights down and have replaced them with some delicate little lights & three white Poinsetta plants on the top of the mantle piece (inspired by one of the fireplaces in Chatsworth House) on a much smaller scale of course smile I will gradually add Christmassy things but won’t put the tree up until early December. I’m going to a wreath making group early December, I enjoying making them & love to see a nice wreath hanging on the front door.

glammanana Thu 24-Nov-22 11:21:13

I already have the battery operated lights on the fir tree outside the front door they have been on the tree for a couple of years now and are not visable they switch on at 4pm every night for 5 hours so I get 3 weeks worth of lights from the batteries much cheaper than mains lights.
I do all the decorations on 15th December which is eldest sons birthday I also have 2 DGSs birthdays between then and the 31st December.
