Hi there, on Christmas Day there will be 10 of us sitting down to eat, but on Christmas Eve just two of us. I will have spent most of the day prepping for the big Feast, so I’m looking for ideas for an easy but special meal for the two of us. What do you normally eat on Christmas Eve?

We always have lobster, oven chips and salad. We saw some lovely looking cray fish while shopping so have bought those as well. My favourite meal!

I can't wait for Christmas. Looking to cook something new and tasty that my family likes. Maybe Chicken, Salads, and some red wine.

Monica Galetti's Christmas Eve fish dish looked intriguing, shown on Mary Berry's programme this evening.

Some lovely ideas on here, thanks everyone! Off to research how to make salmon coulibiac gluten free (local supermarkets have been out of g/f puff pastry for weeks annoyingly!) but also like the sound of the monkfish. Happy Christmas (Eve) everyone!

Ouch rubysong! 😮

We will be staying in. Malt whisky in the afternoon over at stepfather’s (I don’t like to leave him on his own on Christmas Eve) then home about 5pm.

Picky bits I think?

Something plain, like jacket potatoes, houmous and salad.

Seafood platter. Yummy & zilch effort.

I don’t know what is planned. I’ll have a word with the staff later.

Good idea 👍🏻

After preparing for Christmas lunch for 20 and baking 4 hams (to go in AC’s food hampers) the last thing I want to do is cook dinner.

When the children were still at home it would have been fish of some description. Have been out to eat several Christmas Eves but much rather stay home 🎄🎄🎄

Venison and chestnut casserole, veggies and sweet potato mash with gingerbread pudding to follow.

This sounds lovely. Do you have room for a little one?

After all the baking and preparation for the big day, a takeaway is the usual Christmas Eve dinner in this house.

Usually a big fish pie, but just me and dh this year, so I will probably cook the gammon, and we’ll have some of that with mash and parsley sauce.

Another here for fish pie. After, fresh fruit salad.

The tradition for Christmas eve is a Chinese take away.

On past Christmas Eves, when DD was alive and pre-grandsons, the DDs and their DHs would come here and stay over after a big buffet BUT it was all those 4 for 3 savouries, fish, meat and veggie that are available in most supermarkets. I’d do a load of pigs in blankets and a mountain of oven chips too, then we’d all tuck in with glasses of fizz and minimal clearing up afterwards.

Callistemon21 Mon 19-Dec-22 16:43:12

Fish of some kind.

Or I cook the gammon, we have some of it hot with a sauce and vegetables.

That was a very hot curry, rubysong 😲

Sago Mon 19-Dec-22 16:34:36

Roast ham with leeks in cheesy sauce and jacket potatoes.

When our children lived at home we used to have prawn curry. That was, until the year I spilled it all over the radio speakers and my foot. The blister on the foot was the size of an egg and I spent Christmas day with it up on a cushion and others had to do the work. Maybe beans on toast this year.

I usually cook a nice piece of gammon on Christmas Eve morning and have some of that with new potatoes Broad beans and white sauce or will have it with salad, cheese pickles & some nice crusty bread.

Fish pie is perfect - I make mine like Ladyleftover and add squeezed out cubes of frozen spinach or garden peas - then it’s a complete one pot meal.

Grandmadinosaur Mon 19-Dec-22 15:50:54

We always go out to eat on Christmas Eve. After I’d spent time doing prep for the next day the last thing I wanted was to start cooking again.

lixy Mon 19-Dec-22 15:27:08

Salmon, oven chips and a salad as usual for us - I've cooked this for any number from 2 to 15 over the years!
One year some Polish friends staying with us baked a pike, eaten with pickled cabbage, boiled potatoes and caraway seeds.
