Same! I still get my dds a calendar each and we have one as well. No chocs, no gifts, just a nice scene with pictures behind the doors.

I got my husband a whisky one last year. Thought it might be away of finding a new whisky. It was expensive and he didn’t find a replacement for the whisky he likes tht isn’t available anymore got the granddaughter one from body shop and she was disappointed too. So think I will give it a miss this year

Not an Advent Calendar as such, but an easy way to try new products, and relatively cheap compared to some beauty boxes. Gets good reviews. Not full sized products. And no, I don’t work for M&S 😁
I’ve just ordered one, depending on what I think of it, it’ll either be part of my daughter’s Christmas or I’ll keep it for myself.

I bought the most beautiful hand knitted Nativity set on a car boot recently for £12. It is in a lovely big gift box. There are several versions but this is the Jean Greenhowe version which I think is the best. When I volunteered in a charity shop we had several donated and we could easily get £50 for a set so I know I got a bargain.

I bought it because years ago my Mum knitted the set and it took her many months. Every year i decorated a box to resemble a stable, draped ivy over it and added hay from our field shelter. Then put the kings, mary and joseph, the shepherds, donkey, sheep and baby Jesus and it went on proud display at Mum’s church.

When she passed away it was all wrapped in tissue paper with lavender in a lovely box. My niece adores Christmas so I gave it to her because I knew she would treasure it for ever.

So now I have one too.

I bought 2 sets of wooden mini drawers from the works intending to make advent calendars for my adult kids. Never got round to it so need to get my act together and do something with them for my 2 grandchildren. Too late now for this year but I have patterns for a felt nativity scene so perhaps a small character for each drawer. Gets back to the original meaning of Christmas too.

Personally I think some of these expensive offerings are for people with more money than sense, but if you can afford it and they give you pleasure go for it. After all, the companies producing them are just coming up with another way of marketing their products. I certainly can't afford the indulgence.

Perhaps I could make up a whisky one for my DS. It would certainly be cheaper than a ready made one if I could source suitable contents and he'd appreciate it as a birthday present for his December birthday.

When my kids were small i made them a large advent calendar from swan vestas match boxes. I positioned them in the shape of a big Xmas tree. Glued them onto a hardboard back. Covered it in green and red felt and put little brass tacks on the end of each drawer so they would open easily. Numbered each box. Put little sweets in or a few coins or little bits saved from crackers. We used it every year until they grew up. I think I gave it to a charity shop ….. or maybe it is in the loft.

Unbelievable how Advent calendars have morphed over the decades - from my childhood, a one page panorama with teeny tiny windows to open with the Christmas story written out. That was it!

Then companies became clever and made all genres - from children to adults - from religious to commercial - from little tokens (food, toys) to ostentatious. Jo Malone $450??? Give me a break.

I guess the 1%’ers need to have some fun too.

I received an email from Molton Brown advertising their Advent calendar. I nearly had the vapours, when I saw it cost £210!

However, I do like their products and appreciate why it is expensive..

MrJ bought me a felt one with pockets and put seeds into the pockets when I had an allotment, interspersed with IOU’s written on little cards.

We have a homemade fabric Advent calendar which I fill each year for myself and DH. Chocolate in mine days and useful bits in his 🤣

karmalady, The Liquorice is the best Xmas calendar ever it is my favourite of all, second for me is the cheese calendar. Enjoy

I love my advent chimney bought many years ago from Avon, the grandkids love to pull out the sticks when they visit, and on Christmas Eve, Father Christmas ends up in the fireplace at the bottom.
I do also like Boots No7 advent calendars which my husband sometimes buys me (not every year as some things are repeated and some last ages) some products are full size ones too.

Karmalady, I love Danish liquorice too! Never heard of an Advent Calendar one.

I do like the decorative wooden ones (especially those with lights) where you fill them with little treats for each day. You can give the things they'll really appreciate.

I've ordered a local one from a Candle maker. They sell little perfumed candle melts and the holder for one DD her husband does not mind the smell.
My other SIL and DH do not like perfumed candles or air fresheners so I will have to look for something else for the other DD. She lived abroad for a lot of years and had never had them so was thrilled with the M&S one last year she took turns with GD. GS got a chocolate one.
We buy candles from them as well as they have obscure titles of small towns over in the west, one smelt like clean washing, mine smelt like the seaside.

There was a great letter in the Times last year from a woman who said, why bother with an advent calendar? Just stick post-it notes numbered 1 to 24 on the contents of the wine rack. I liked the sound of her!
