I bought one last year and it was nice, cost a fair bit but was sewing related. Afterwards I appreciated that I only had a few things that I would use, the rest went to the charity shop

I have just ordered a calendar for this year, entirely different

Or he, it could have been a he!
Not a knitter whoever it was.

Found this 3D one in a catalogue today - going to order for Gdcs. Press-out cardboard pieces, add one each day. I’m sure Gdd1 (8) especially will love it.

That's amazing Witzend .... can you let us know which carologue it was, please?

Witzend Wed 04-Oct-23 15:22:47

It’s in the Museum Selection one, DannieRae - I dare say you can find it in their online one too - MUSEUMSELECTION.CO.UK

Well I’ve gone completely mad this year and ordered the Boots Ultimate beauty calendar and also the John Lewis one. I will use everything in them over the year. Self-indulgent I know but who cares.

I have spotted some fabrics, marked out to make advent calendars, the pockets on a background and then the pockets would need to be filled. Minerva and other sites. A good project, tbh I am past all that now, I gave away the beautiful bucilla calendars that I made. There is a lovely bucilla one on ebay, around £45 and I did that one too, worth it for the finished result, which takes many hours of satisfying crafting. Gave that away too before I moved house

karmalady, The Liquorice is the best Xmas calendar ever it is my favourite of all, second for me is the cheese calendar. Enjoy

Thanks paperback writer grin

I had the lakrids by bulow advent calendar two years ago and it was gorgeous. They sent me an e mail this year and so I snapped it up again. They had a spin competition and that also gave me £10 off. £50 in all with free p and p and a free gift before 24th september. I love having the pleasure of opening something with a treat in it

£70? 😲

And now sold out!!

CanadianGran Sat 07-Oct-23 03:12:48

ixion, wow!

I just snooped on the Wedgewood site, and they do have some beautiful Christmas ornaments. Not that I would pay that much for one, but gorgeous.

Callistemon, from what she told me I’d gathered that it was some fairly grumpy old git of a bloke who’d binned it.

I was coveting the Jo Malone calendar but as george'sgran said - at £400 + I'll have to give it a miss!

Bon mamon has arrived grin one big heavy box and one smaller heavy box. I opened the smaller box and the contents are fab, would make such a good present. Incredible value all in all.

Marydoll Mon 16-Oct-23 20:39:08

Karmalady, on your recommendation, I have just ordered the BonMamon one for my daughter from W.H. Smith. It was cheaper than Amazon and because I bought some other items, I got free delivery, then 20% off my whole order.
A bargain.

DD2 made a tower with her advent jams last year to send me!

BlueBelle Mon 16-Oct-23 21:01:08

Somehow I ve managed to live without them apart from buying my kids and grandkids the original ones when they were kids
I ve never had one, they weren’t around in my childhood and I never thought about having one as an adult
Seems a bit OTT to me and the prices for some quoted seems like I ve had a good miss, none of my friends or adult family have ever had the grownup versions !!!

Joseann Mon 16-Oct-23 21:07:54

I've bought the Cath Kidston beauty one for young DGD because it is cruelty free and has several lip balm flavours.

DanniRae Tue 17-Oct-23 07:46:04

I never had an advent calendar as a child so my eldest daughter buys me one every year - it's always a charming picture but no gifts - and I am very happy with it! smile

NotSpaghetti Tue 17-Oct-23 08:09:15

I love the traditional ones and my children always had them. We have one of those already to go on our mantlepiece.

I intend to buy a "fancy" one instead of a Christmas present for someone I love who already has everything they could possibly want.

I think it's a solution to too much at once at Christmas and holds with the spirit of "looking forward". I can't afford to spend on a massive Christmas gift but think.this let's them know I'm thinking about them.

I don't feel they are quite doing the same thing as the original nativity scenes with little pictures and tiny bible verses whose purpose was religious.

toscalily Tue 17-Oct-23 09:42:52

During lockdown I bought a Lego one & a stationery one with pens & so forth from Amazon for two granddaughters, thought they would share the contents as they did. Not at this price though grin

I have bought the Bon Maman one as a gift for someone which they really enjoyed. I usually get the Lindt calendar for the younger grandchildren as the chocolate is nicer.

grannydarkhair Tue 17-Oct-23 14:34:12

I’m very pleased I ordered the Bonne Maman Advent Calendar. It arrived a few days ago, it’s much bigger than I anticipated and was really well packed.
I agree with karmalady the separately boxed extra three spreads that come with it would make a lovely gift in themselves. But as I’ve already got stuck into the Chocolate and Orange one, that won’t be happening 😁

rockgran Tue 17-Oct-23 14:47:40

What a difference from my childhood in the fifties when we had a cardboard advent calendar that just had pictures to open then was brought out again each year...and I thought it was brilliant!grin

MayBee70 Tue 17-Oct-23 15:45:29

I hated the way advent calendars started to include chocolate. Surely it was better to have a lovely Christmasy scene to look at each day? I’ve got a box full of advent calendars that I’ve collected over the years: some from Germany and Austria and they’re beautiful. I’m going to get them out for the grandchildren this year.
