I can't abide the song " fairytale of New York". I know its very popular but I just don't like it. In fact I will leave a shop if it is being played ! Do you really like it or just ordered to like it?

kittylester

It's the first song on my Christmas playlist.

Louella what an odd thing to say.

Oldfrill what happens in marriages?

It's the first song on my Christmas playlist.

And mine!

I don't know why anyone would pretend to like it if they really didn't confused

NotSpaghetti

I have always loved it for its gritty poetic honesty.

Perfect 👍

Love it.

I like it but it isn't my favourite, which is Wham's Last Christmas.

MiniMoon Sat 09-Dec-23 09:42:22

It isn't Christmas until I've heard Fairytale of New York. I always enjoyed The Pogues songs.

Shane’s entire funeral Mass was broadcast live on BBC and Sky news yesterday and it was a joyous send off involving a large group of singers and musicians. Fairy Tale of New York was sung and and some of his family rose to their feet and danced. It was a real celebration of his life. There were A list actors from around the world, the president of Ireland and many locals from the Tipperary town filling the church.

Never liked it. Husband loves it.

Ziplok Sat 09-Dec-23 10:14:18

I like its catchy tune.

I find Cliff Richards Xmas songs far too slushy, but like Slades 😁

Grannybags Sat 09-Dec-23 10:17:01

I love it too. My favourite Christmas song.

As others have said so much better than Cliff, Maria, Slade etc.

aggie Sat 09-Dec-23 10:21:31

I must live under a stone ! I’ve never heard more than a few bars , no idea of the story line , it does have a very catchy tune .

GrannyGravy13 Sat 09-Dec-23 10:40:36

I really like it, always have and always will

Nana75 Sat 09-Dec-23 11:03:28

No,I definitely don't like the"?song".The question mark because to me it's not so much a song as a "durge".Awful!Anyway isn,t Christmas meant to be a happy time? The birth of Jesus! So give me Cliff,s"cheese" any day. However if anyone wants sadness and misery, what about "Do they know it's Christmas" ?

I love it, always have. Shane MacGowan was a poet, musician, flawed and lovely human. Rip Shane and what a wonderful ‘send off’ your funeral was. Anyone who hasn’t seen it and likes Fairytale - Google you tube and see the song performed in the Church at his funeral. Glorious

I was just telling my DH to watch this. What a fantastic send off.

Iam64 Sat 09-Dec-23 11:19:36

It was a fantastic send off Grandyma. It made me think about a recent thread on this forum where many people expressed negative views on funerals. There was support for unattended cremations with a celebration on a future date
My husband’s funeral last year was very important to me and his loved ones. We didn’t dance in the church but there was love filled laughter. We exhibited some of his art work and publication at the reception-wake. We are all different of course but this glorious send off for SMac is a reminder of the significance of ritual imo

I have to admit it's not a song I like....I spent a number of years married to an alcoholic and it's a little too 'close to home' for me.
However, I really love Haunted, with Sinead O'Connor... beautiful song.

Calendargirl

I love it.

So poignant.

“I could have been someone”.

“Well, so could anyone!”

So true.

Oh Calendargirl I was going to select that line as my favourite in the song. I always join in and sing that bit because I think it is so poignant too!
Driving home for Christmas is my favourite seasonal song but Fairytale of New York is up there too grin

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 09-Dec-23 11:33:25

I don’t care for it. Too depressing.

karmalady Sat 09-Dec-23 11:35:05

I am watching the funeral now, via youtube and sky and yesterday ordered a set of 5 pogues cds via ebay. I hope they come with words. The words to fairytale can be found via google

The funeral hs not started yet on youtube, hence me writing

Bella23 Sat 09-Dec-23 11:35:05

I always liked it as a Christmas song, far better than any other.
It tells life as it is for some people whether they have Irish roots or not. I don't think it reflects the Irish badly only if they want to think it themselves and the thousands lining Dublins Streets proved it yesterday.
A much underrated poet. I read a critic yesterday that said it was written under the influence of drink, though it compared his ability to James Joyce and Yeats.
One doesn't have to go far to other countries Wales, Dylan Thomas and England Coolridge et al for beautiful imaginative and sometimes raw poetry written under the influence of something. Rabbie Burns being another.

Nannarose Sat 09-Dec-23 14:55:34

I absolutely love it. I see it as about both the experience of poverty, and the immigrant experience generally - even if the non-existent NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay.
My heart flips at the phrase 'Well, I'd a lucky one....' heard so many times in my childhood, heralding a treat!

And I don't expect everyone to like it, but lots do - it also does my heart good to hear the rhythms of folk music getting a wider audience than usual.

sharon103 Sat 09-Dec-23 15:04:29

The best Christmas song ever. I love it

AGAA4 Sat 09-Dec-23 15:25:06

I love it and I'm not just pretending!
