I can't abide the song " fairytale of New York". I know its very popular but I just don't like it. In fact I will leave a shop if it is being played ! Do you really like it or just ordered to like it?

The only Christmas song I actually like.

Most of us like Fairytale of New York, and we are on page 9 discussing it, I dought we would be doing that with some of the cheesy Christmas songs around.

Love it

No no no! I have just looked at the lyrics! More suited to a drunken Friday night than a "suitable" Christmas song. Everyone is entitled to their preference and opinion though. I definitely DON'T like it at all.I totally agree with op.If it was playing in a shop I would leave. So far thankfully that hasn,t happened. There seem to be more than a few of us "haters"!

More likers than haters, I think. But, hey, each to their own.
We are all different.

I was in a charity shop yesterday. It was mobbed, Fairytale of New York came on and almost everyone in the shop joined in when it came to the chorus whilst rummaging through the baskets or rails. It was very nice to hear.

I cannot imagine leaving a shop because of the music playing although Jingle Bells and the like drive me nuts. You are sensitive souls indeed.

Doodledog Sun 17-Dec-23 14:36:54

Agreed, OldFrill. I dislike anything by Cliff, and find When A Child Is Born irritating, but neither would drive me from a shop, (in the unlikely event that I was in one grin).

I can assure you Doodledog that i have been driven from shops by the music, usually the volume and, at this time of the year, the sheer repetitiveness of the same limited range of tunes usually in excreble cover versions.

On Tuesday this week we dived for the car when the muzak that our local French municipality was booming into the streets consisted of traditional British Christmas carols - Hark the Herald Angels Sings, and others rendered in a schmalzy style more appropriate for 'Baby its Cold Outside' and in a very American American accent.

Doodledog Sun 17-Dec-23 20:34:02

I'm not saying you haven't, M0nica grin. Just that a song wouldn't drive me out.

I'm not fond of noise: talking, tv, or music, I lose concentration.

However, in a Bernkastel-Kues market several days before Christmas I was totally amused by 3 of our young GC rocking out to 'Santa Claus is coming to town'. But it had been a good ski trip, I was happy to be heading home.

Yep, you got it, more suited to a drunken maudlin late Friday night in an Irish pub.
Each to their own as they say.😄

It isn't the words it is the music and performance, it would be a great song even if it was in a language I didn't know praaising something I hatee.

As an aside, re music in shops. As I was wandering round Lidl yesterday, I became aware that something was different. No music at all. Not a jingle bell to be heard. It was so refreshing.
I like Fairytale as an alternative Christmas song as I certainly do not wish that it was Christmas every day.

I read yesterday that the song has been voted the best ever Christmas song in a week long poll by the Radio Times. The results are here..
