I shall buy the wherewithal today, and make them over the weekend.
Looking forward to the mixing up - the smell is so intensely Christmassy.

I made mine (six of them) a couple of weeks ago, the kitchen smelt lovely, reminiscent of my Granny’s.

Enjoy the ritual, as that is how I look at my Christmas baking, pickling etc. šŸŽ„

Next is Christmas cake hopefully before Monday, and then I shall assemble the mince pies (puff and shortcrust) and freeze them ready to be baked as and when but not before 1st December.

Only two of us out of 14 in the family like them, so I just make Delia’s light puddings these days, which a few more will eat. I still make a traditional cake and mincemeat for pies though - I look forward to it as an important part of the run up to Christmas.

This conjured up a memory of my Mum. It was many, many years ago and she had all the ingredients spread out on the dining table to make the Christmas puddings. I had seen her do this so many time but on this occasion I was considered old enough to accurately 'weigh' things out - we didn't have any scales but Mum used a Tala measuring cone for everything. Oh the joy of placing a finger on the knot as she secured the string around each pudding basin!
I'm off to have a little weep now.

I've gone from making one large Christmas pudding to making six small ones. I've bought the ingredients this morning and will make them this weekend.

I’m the only one who eats Christmas so I don’t make them anymore pudding but I shall buy myself a little one. I do miss the smell …

I've made my cake and already fed it with brandy (with DH permission from his bottle).. smile I sadly not gone as far as making a pudding but got a Taste the Difference one from Sainsbury's which has had a good review on a tv programme.
My mum did all her own Christmas baking - cake, pudding and mince pies. I remember her puddings in a basin with a cloth top, tied with string and most importantly some sixpences added into the pudding mix.

I live alone and usually go to one of the children for Dinner on Christmas day so don't make them any more. But when I did I always made them during the School Summer holidays just like my mum did. The kids always helped with the stirring and all grew up loving Chritmas pudding, very few enjoy the special Cakes and puddings these days.

You don’t wait forā€Stir-up Sundayā€?

JaneJudge Sun 10-Nov-24 13:52:20

I’m in awe of people who plan ahead like this

winterwhite Sun 10-Nov-24 13:56:43

GrandMattie no, it comes much too late. Was not a myth my mother knew, or mentioned anyway, and she was a great traditionalist.

Picklesgranma Sun 10-Nov-24 13:57:07

No Christmas puddings anymore but I made my Christmas cakes yesterday, the family came and stirred and made a wish. My kitchen smelt divine yesterday.

grandMattie Sun 10-Nov-24 14:27:14

Was joking!

Always make my Christmas cake and Christmas pudding in October half term (retired teacher), it's so lovely that our granddaughter now 'helps' me and our daughter.

knspol Sun 10-Nov-24 14:58:58

Made my Christmas cake about 6-8 weeks ago to give me plenty of time to feed it with extra brandy. Never made a Christmas pud before used to but from M&S but tried one of their individual puds last week and it was not nice, different recipe I think.

Someone gave me a fish kettle years ago, the only thing I use it for (hope the image comes up). Its perfect for 3 puddings sitting on 2 gas rings.

workinglady Sun 10-Nov-24 15:21:20

I will be making my Christmas cake this coming week. The weekly feeding of brandy will be left to himself to do. As my family are superfans of the "clootie dumpling", this will be next on the agenda.

GrammarGrandma Sun 10-Nov-24 15:51:32

Just finished making our two! Now they have to steam for four hours.

Sarahr Sun 10-Nov-24 21:44:36

I used to love our Christmas pudding making day. Sadly, I no longer have family to make them with and nobody to give them to. 😄

BevSec Sun 10-Nov-24 22:08:35

But 8 hours steaming!

GrauntyHelen Sun 10-Nov-24 22:47:39

Stir up Sunday is early enough for me

Gwyllt Sun 10-Nov-24 22:59:44

00mam00 I was given a fish kettle a number of years ago when a friend was down sizing. It was her mums and she never used it. I haven’t either but if I ever think of making three puds I shall remember
Made a cake though šŸ˜€

Spinnaker Sun 10-Nov-24 23:39:20

Two cakes, two puds and two very large jars of pickled onions done four weeks ago. Going to do a couple more jars of pickles this next day or so. Has anyone ever done gherkins ?

nanna8 Mon 11-Nov-24 08:10:53

Any recipes? I don’t usually make them, just buy them but you lot are tempting me!

Grandmabatty Mon 11-Nov-24 10:54:37

I use Delia Smith's recipe and make eight small ones. They don't require as much steaming -3 hours instead of 8- and I give most away as presents
