Ok so , John Lewis Christmas ad is causing much discussion between me and OH, What is it about? Is the main character dead ? Is her sister dead ? Is no one dead ? Is she just mourning the spirit of Christmas past ? We are stuck !!!
(Apologies if this has been posted before)

It’s manic not understandable and a massive waste of money

Totally agree. A few years ago the Christmas ads were straightforward, clear and endearing. Now they are just trying - and failing IMO - to be too clever and enigmatic

I loved the boxer on the trampoline nothing compares to that

Loving the M&S one best of all - Dawn French always brings a smile. The M&S ad just packs all the ingredients of Christmas: smiles, laughter, magic, generosity, kindness and oh yes, yummy food!

Absolutely this

Doesn’t Dawn French look lovely with her silver grey hair?

Ohh! I have to disagree about Dawn French, she gives me the creeps!!!
Furthermore, I don't think she & Jennifer Saunders are as funny as they think they both are. Overated the pair of them 🥴

I’d like them to have a Nativity scene somewhere. They unfortunately always forget the true meaning.

Hear, hear LovelyLady, Christmas has become one long consumer fest!
The real meaning of Christmas seems to have been forgotten & diluted down over recent years..
Yet, more importantly Christmas both the word itself & its importance to Christians in the UK seems to be actively discouraged!
Now Christmas is often referred to as 'The Holiday'. The true meaning of Christmas will soon be lost in the UK if we are not too careful. 😒

JL not the best this year but I did get on second viewing and thought it was touching.
I actually like the Christmas adds.

the only christmas advert i like this year is the m and s one, when dawn french stands at the door saying come in, invade my personal space as that is just how i feel...lol

Talking about it and saying it’s awful doesn’t mean anyone is buying anything from John Lewis though LucyAnna
and Grannygravy
Not sure why you think it’s a success

I hadn't seen it but watched LucyAnna2 link , it's all a bit manic, tbh, but she did get the gist of it, do I like it no more or less than any of the others.
The only plus I can see is that I have a very similar jumper ( bought recently from Monsoon) to the girl in the advert, so feel bang up to date and trendy now.😂

Greciangirl Tue 19-Nov-24 15:32:58

I have no idea what any of the Christmas ads are trying to convey as I mute them straight away.
I’m sick to death of them.
There are relentless and the novelty soon wears of.

Baa Humbug and all that.

NotAGran55 Tue 19-Nov-24 15:28:35

I think that there is a quick reference to the main character’s mother being dead.
Sally (main character) looks towards herself, I think (?) and another woman (mother?) and is invited to join them, which she declines with tears in her eyes.

First time I saw the ad had no idea what it was meant to convey. Second and last time figured it out. Not impressed.

I’ve only ever been in John Lewis once - for a wedding outfit. Came out with nothing. It’s in the Trafford Centre, which I don’t like anyway - it’s full of expensive items which no-one really needs. The only attraction is the free parking! The M60 is a nightmare - too busy.
At least the J Lewis advert is not as bad as the woke rubbish in the Boots version. Never shopping in there again!

MelAnt2 Tue 19-Nov-24 13:46:40

As the mother of two sisters who are very close, this advert is very heartwarming.
Sorry, Lovely Lady, but this season was hijacked from the pagans, so forgive us if we don’t agree with you about the lack of the Nativity.

I'm certain no-one is dead - from the main characters at least. It's just about how your shared past leads to perfected gift buying.

Mojack26 Tue 19-Nov-24 12:44:06

Not seen it..but Boots and M&S are awful...still like Kevin the Carrot

Got everyone talking about John Lewis though……wink

You are correct, the advert has been a success!

It's like a high speed train going nowhere.

Far too fast to understand.

Lovetopaint037 Tue 19-Nov-24 03:36:00

I wonder how much that cost. Too much I would guess.

Quite an amusing review of it in The Guardian -

😂😂😂

Loved that!

Isn't there already posts about this?
