What are you having for Christmas dinner?

I’ve been out all day and arrived home to hear the fascinating piece of news from DH that he had heard about a survey on Classic FM (he couldn’t remember who did the survey, or whether it was on the news) and the the survey had discovered that 90% of people under 40 were going to have chips instead of roast potatoes for their Christmas dinner, but 98% of over 65s were going to have roast potatoes.

What a fascinating piece of information!

Anyway, we’re going to our son’s house on Christmas Day, along with our other son and his family, and our daughter and her family, and we’re going to have roast turkey and all the trimmings, which will certainly include roast potatoes, and will definitely not include any chips. My son is 47. I’m not sure where he falls in the survey.

Whatever, it will be delicious, just as it was last year, and indeed as was the roast beef and roast potatoes and vegetables that he cooked for us last Sunday. Our other son has made the Christmas pudding. We’re all at his house on Christmas Eve, and they’re all at ours on Boxing Day, although we’ll do a ham, baked potatoes and salad, and definitely no chips!

We will be having a chip free Christmas. Will you? And what will you be eating over the Christmas period?

MissAdventure

I'm sorry Marydoll but I'm arresting you for the offence of serving mashed and roasted potatoes, on the same plate, on the date of 25th December, therfore commiting an act or a I've.y planning to commit, an act of public outrage.

Evening all, by the way. 👨‍✈️

Ah, but they are not on the same plate, Miss A, because I won't be having roasties! So there!! 😉

Since I am cooking dinner, I can have what I want!

I remember one year my mother in law didn’t do mashed potato on Christmas Day. I missed it so much. Couldn’t stop craving mashed potato for ages after that. If my daughter’s kitchen doesn’t get finished I don’t think I’ll be having Christmas dinner. I’ve told my partner that I just want ( hopefully) Christmas dinner on Christmas Day. One year we were eating Christmas dinner every day for at least a week, possibly longer. Another year ( my birthday is soon after Christmas) he bought me two birthday cakes and I was the only one eating them (he’s a bit of a feeder). I always cook red cabbage. Not because I like it but I always think everything needs a splash of red…

petal53 Wed 11-Dec-24 00:06:38

A splash of red wine with be nice Maybee if you didn’t fancy the cabbage.

petal53 Wed 11-Dec-24 00:06:58

would be nice….

Prawn smoked salmon and langoustine salad with rye toast. Roast duck and roast pork with crackling homemade sauce (yet to be decided) roast potatoes and vegetables. Christmas pudding and Yule log with brandy cream and custard.

Out hiking and a cheese sandwich up on the moors then a cold cheese/meat platter with a nice bottle of wine in the evening.
Christmas decoration (singular) goes up on Christmas Eve and is put away on Boxing Day.
Then thank goodness, it’s all over for another year!

I have no idea.
I’m going with DD and family to her sister-in-law’s. I’ve never eaten there. Quite honestly, I prefer the meals I used to make, but, hey, I would be totally on my own…

Whitewavemark2 Wed 11-Dec-24 06:05:13

Hoping to make it to our son’s for Christmas Day - where we will be having the traditional lunch with a choice of desert. There will be about 15 of us I think.

If DH isn’t well enough, I have a wild three bird roast tucked away composed of pheasant, mallard and partridge - stuffed, just right for two, and Christmas pudding standing ready in the pantry. No starter, as we eat less these days.

LaCrepescule Wed 11-Dec-24 06:05:31

Boeuf bourgignone with roast potatoes and two veg (haven’t decided what yet.)
None of us much like turkey and I can do the meat the day before. Always tastes better that way!

My husband and I will be on our own in Christmas day (seeing family on Boxing day). We're going to have chicken Rogan Josh, samosas, pakoras and naan bread, a couple of of Indian beers, then ice cream for dessert

Will you the Rogan Josh be home made HVDY2?

So far I am most tempted by this and other Indian/Asian style suggestions but also Rib of Beef (though not at the same mea)
Decisions decisions.

cornergran Wed 11-Dec-24 07:45:08

Our son is cooking - he hasn’t yet decided on the menu. Fine by me, whatever he serves will be delicious, he’s an excellent totally unflappable cook, so much better than his Mum.

Ziggy62 Wed 11-Dec-24 07:48:38

Roast turkey and ham (we're in Ireland), stuffing balls, pigs in blankets, roast and mash potatoes, sprouts and carrots, gravy, cranberry sauce
M&S Christmas pudding with either custard or cream but may not be eaten on Christmas day

RosesandLilac Wed 11-Dec-24 07:51:00

I’m refusing to cook a Christmas dinner, I’m having steak and chips with salad and DH can either decide what he wants or go to his sisters. I hate big meals, I hate spending the morning cooking and as there’s just the two of us the thought of eating the leftovers for days afterwards…….
Yes, I’m grumpy, I am doing what I want for the first time in 47 years!

HowVeryDareYou2 Wed 11-Dec-24 08:01:59

Granmarderby10 Yes, all from scratch.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Wed 11-Dec-24 08:30:42

You do sound out of sorts Roses. A bit scratchy with one another perhaps?

Primrose53 Wed 11-Dec-24 08:45:21

Everything is up in the air here with husband in hospital two weeks today. We can’t make plans yet. Can’t see him coming home for Christmas as he still has a long journey ahead after a seriously bad stroke.

Son got tree and decs out of loft yesterday and I hope to get it up today but not really feeling in the mood.

Iam64 Wed 11-Dec-24 08:47:17

I’m hosting 9 adults 4 children, 3 dogs about 11 am for nibbles and present opening. 3 adults and 2 children leave about 2pm for their Christmas lunch elsewhere.
So for 6 adults and 2 children I’ll be serving our trad Christmas lunch - turkey, 2 different stuffings, pigs in blankets, roast and mash pots, bashed carrots and neeps, sprouts parsnips and gravy.
Christmas pud, and shop bought tiramisu and chocolate sponge with cream/ice cream
The dogs will have a few left overs with their usual food.

MissAdventure Wed 11-Dec-24 08:49:25

I've thought of ordering indian on christmas eve, and reheating on christmas day.

I've heard of people who do that, so I suppose it's an option .

Iam64 Wed 11-Dec-24 08:49:42

Just read your update Primrose, sending positive thoughts and 🙏🏽 if acceptable, serious strokes are a real challenge aren’t they. I hope he continues to recover and that you and loved ones can find some comfort

MissAdventure Wed 11-Dec-24 08:51:48

Best wishes from me, too, primrose.
I do hope things turn around for you.

MissAdventure Wed 11-Dec-24 08:58:12

Also, if anyone is on their own, they can come to me and I'll include them in my festivities, such as they are. 🥳

My treat, sort of, except I'm not really a good cook.

tanith Wed 11-Dec-24 09:03:11

I’ll be having whatever my GS and partner serve 😉 I did offer to buy a turkey but was politely told thank you but no and that you have served your time providing Christmas dinner and to just enjoy the day but without all the cooking etc.

RosesandLilac Wed 11-Dec-24 09:04:38

I’m sorry, I don’t mean to be grouchy, I have never enjoyed Christmas, largely because all the cost and work has always fallen on me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Nanato3 Wed 11-Dec-24 09:21:19

I've cooked Christmas dinner for 46 years all from scratch with never any help , so this year
Due to poor health I'm going for something simple, don't know what yet.
I can't even be bothered to put the tree up !

Witzend Wed 11-Dec-24 09:22:21

petal53, I still make them, will be making around 3 dozen tomorrow to take to a big extended family do up north. I’ve usually made at least a couple of batches by now (starting strictly not before 1st December) but we invariably scoff far too many - 🐷🐷 - dh virtually inhales them - so it’s good to delay the piggery for once.
