What are you having for Christmas dinner?

I’ve been out all day and arrived home to hear the fascinating piece of news from DH that he had heard about a survey on Classic FM (he couldn’t remember who did the survey, or whether it was on the news) and the the survey had discovered that 90% of people under 40 were going to have chips instead of roast potatoes for their Christmas dinner, but 98% of over 65s were going to have roast potatoes.

What a fascinating piece of information!

Anyway, we’re going to our son’s house on Christmas Day, along with our other son and his family, and our daughter and her family, and we’re going to have roast turkey and all the trimmings, which will certainly include roast potatoes, and will definitely not include any chips. My son is 47. I’m not sure where he falls in the survey.

Whatever, it will be delicious, just as it was last year, and indeed as was the roast beef and roast potatoes and vegetables that he cooked for us last Sunday. Our other son has made the Christmas pudding. We’re all at his house on Christmas Eve, and they’re all at ours on Boxing Day, although we’ll do a ham, baked potatoes and salad, and definitely no chips!

We will be having a chip free Christmas. Will you? And what will you be eating over the Christmas period?

Smoked salmon and prawn starter, with a glass of fizz.

The main course this year will be roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, red cabbage, sprouts with chestnuts, carrots, cranberry sauce, stuffing and gravy made with the meat juices and a splash of red wine. Red wine will be served with the meal.

Dessert will be Christmas pudding with brandy sauce and then a little later a selection of cheeses served with grapes, cheese biscuits and a glass of port.

This meal will begin from about 4 pm and run into the evening, so nothing else or we’ll explode 😂.

Unusually, we're going to a restaurant this Christmas as we'll be on our own. We're both having turkey with traditional trimmings. If were hosting Christmas lunch for the family, we always, always have smoked salmon soup followed by roast beef , potato & celeriac galette & braised red cabbage. We then have Christmas pudding and/or homemade mincemeat ice cream. Yummy! We're actually having that this Sunday as we're having an early Christmas due to DD's impending surgery on 23rd.

Do we all really care what others are eating?

It’s usually the same old, same old.

I don’t think it’s a matter of ‘caring’. Isn’t it about being interested in others, and maybe hearing about others’ customs?

Should we only engage in conversation about things we ‘ really care’ about?

Spaghetti and half jar pasta sauce most likely, if any is left by then, its just another long month on a very low budget

This is such a sad response Mibsy.. are there any food banks you can apply to nearby, or Churches doing Christmas meals.. thinking of you and sending best wishes..

DD is coming round so we'll be having something veggie. I've been having a look at vegetarian wellingtons (not to wear!) but the recipes look complicated. Has anyone any experience of making one?

Going to son & daughter-in-law, there will be turkey and ham and roasties, sprouts, stuffing, pigs in blankets and, I hope, daughter-in-law's fabulous red cabbage.

If we get the snow as forecast then we won't travel, in which case we'll have duck legs cooked in red wine and all the trimmings as above.

I have a delish recipe for a roast cauliflower wellington with cheese sauce, if you’re interested, Jane71.
I’m afraid for a pair of wellies, you’d need a second cauliflower!

As my husband is still in hospital I am in a quandary. I bought a turkey crown just in case they run out. We may or may not eat it on Christmas Day but at least it’s there.

I usually buy a whole turkey and husband always strips the carcase thoroughly and we make turkey stew and turkey soup.

It won’t be Christmas without him but we will do our best. I suppose we will be allowed to visit on that day. I really hope his feeding tube is out by then.

I wonder if you could make a lovely turkey soup to take in to the hospital as soon as he's able to swallow real food.. I do hope you have a lovely Christmas and that your DH recovers well...

We are going to my eldest DD’s this year on Christmas Eve and coming home on Boxing Day. There will be quite a few of us, my mum and dad, me and OH , DD2 and her fiancé and DD1 her hubby and my DGC who has just turned 1.

Boxing Day will be a buffet and games….human cluedo begins.

Christmas Dinner will be a starter of smoked salmon mousse, king prawn and avocado salad with champagne , traditional turkey, PIB’s, roast potatoes and parsnips, sprouts, glazed carrots, cauliflower cheese, stuffing and gravy, and wine. Dessert chocolate orange torte with fresh cream followed by coffee.

Cheese board later in the evening, with grapes, crackers and chutneys etc. and then more games and perhaps some tv.

Boxing Day human cluedo ends and the winner announced and then we will be going home and later in the week DD3 and DGC2 (8months old) are coming to stay at mine.

I’m really looking forward to this year , the first proper one as a Nan.

I'm in Australia, so it's getting on for high summer here. We'll get together at DD's place, as she has a pool ( most necessary at this time of the year). We'll all bring something to share - my contribution is cold chicken and my " famous" potato salad. Others will bring ham, prawns, and various salads.
Granddaughter and I have a tradition of making dessert, so this year it will be individual pavlovas - bought from the shop, I'm too old to bother making fancy desserts !

Merry Christmas to everyone !

A frozen, uncooked turkey crown, suggests on the packaging - 'do not reheat'. I can't eat a whole joint and was hoping after cooking to slice/cube the rest freeze and use again later (after defrosting) in casseroles another dinner sandwichs etc is this not possible?

Of course cooking and then freezing leftovers is possible.

I assume many people freeze turkey, somehow use as leftovers. We send meats, left from Christmas meals home with our Daughters as we're vegan.

Still alive had it cold next day and a lovely casserole yesterday no ill effects
