Where are my invites?

Whilst downloading some library books onto my e-reader, I spent half an hour having a look through some women's magazines.

Who are these people that get invites to swanky, sophisticated parties over the holiday period, and swan off wearing a variety of ultra-expensive, sparkly gowns and shoes and bags - with one outfit alone costing over £1000?

Where are these joyful parties and upmarket soirees, full of cultured and interesting guests?

Next Monday evening my cousin and her husband are coming over for some drinks and a takeaway curry. I shall be wearing my classy M&S jogging pants and I might run to a jumper with a tiny bit of sparkle. On my feet will be my M&S slippers that have a hole in the sole that I'm clinging on to hoping a new pair will wing my way on 25th. That's about it for me.

I am happy to live vicariously through my fellow gransnetters exciting Christmas social calendars.

How many wonderful cocktail parties are you all attending and what will you be wearing?

I think the party/glam gene bypassed me. I can remember my parents always going out and have photos of my mother and her SIL in cocktail dresses and furs. I am happy in jeans and a warm jumper (usually covered in dog hair). Sparkly dresses don’t go very well with wellies!

It's just the two of us on Christmas day but I will wear my ancient red Mantaray dress, it only comes out at Christmas. Its cotton, lined and has short puffy sleeves and a high waist so cool for cooking and roomy enough to have pudding too! It has embroidery and a little bit of sparkle. Worn with fluffy slippers.

I bought a flash sale green damask skirt from Monsoon to wear with my twenty year old ( but still elegant) black clingy jersey wool top from Laura Ashley for Christmas dinner in the evening. I will have cooked the said dinner in the glamorous outfit too.

I shall be crawling round the floor with the toddler granddaughter all day in black jeans and a nice green Hobbs top, also a bargain buy.

I feel I am making an effort in the glamour department whilst ‘keeping it real’ as they used to say.

I have no idea what I shall be wearing, and have no christmas food decorations or anything this year. I have written on other threads about the leak behind the toilet , which meant that the total bathroom had to come out and I have had 10 very difficult weeks while it has all had to be totally emptied ,sanitised , dried out for weeks and at last today I am home. Everywhere else is a shambles but I am grateful to be able now to use my lovely new bathroom, and sleep in my own bed. It will take me weeks to sort out everywhere, but today I was able to look at the christmas lights and decorations in the street and enjoy them. I was able to sit here and listen to J S Bach as composer of the week with a cup of coffee, and how lovely it felt to be home at last. I can climb over the shambles and manage to open part of the wardrobe door, so whatever I can reach that is clean is what I shall wear. So I may be in very old green cord trousers and if I can reach it have a lovely old cashmere jumper with a small hole under the armpit, but will make me feel warm and comfy. If I cant reach them it will be dressing gown all day!!

Feeling a bit better now so I'm hoping to give my two new Damart vests an airing grin

I have a splendid red sequinned top which I bought for my 80th birthday celebration. Having seen the photographs I shall not wear it again but will make do with a black top with discreet stars scattered about in the forlorn hope that it is slightly more slimming.

I have done a laundry load today, and now have plenty of clean socks, so I'm ready for all events over the next week or two.
It's so important to keep one's standards high, don't you think.

I make sure my arm warmers are all nice and clean, most of them made from old socks, but they do keep my arms cosy😁

TBH I’m very glad I don’t have any invitations to dress-up-in-sparkly-things parties! Saves me having to think of plausible excuses for why I ‘can’t’ go!

Sadly, my hospitable neighbours, who a1ways used to have a drinks party in the new year, are now in poor health and cannot manage it any more.

All my family are visiting in shifts over Christmas, and I'm thrilled to spend time with them. I shall be exquisitly groomed in my Primani joggers and a new, sparkly red jumper.
Over that, I shall be stunningly attired in a selection of Dunelm aprons as I dash between the cooker and the washing machine.
The shifts of visitors will naturally require a good performance from the kitchen staff (ME), the chambermaid (ME), and the dazzling hostess (possibly DGD or ME again).
A busy life is a happy life! confusedgrin

Gosh made me think, it’s probably 20 years since I’ve been to a party! I love sequins but never owned any wish I’d worn them when I was younger and still invited to parties.

Susieq62 Fri 20-Dec-24 15:43:22

Saturday it is our choir’s concert so I have a black blouse with gold sequins and it is over 5 years old
Sunday is a slobbing in joggers day
Monday is my volunteering at the library morning so I shall wear jeans and a warm red jumper then I am having a much needed massage
Tuesday we drive to Nottingham for Christmas, a tapas and cocktails evening is booked . OH is treating as that is his contribution to the festivities.
Wednesday a warm jumper and jeggings for the pub before we relax.
Thursday a different jumper as daughter and I head to the cinema whilst OH watches football.
No flash clothing, comfort and warmth plus family is all that is required
Chin! Chin!

The invitations to cocktail parties are piling up. My maid will sort out my numerous dresses and diamonds for each one. Here comes James my butler with another invitation on a silver silver.

Parties - we don't get invites to many but Dinner Dances are regular occurrences I do like to be dressed up for formal occasions.
The charity shops offer a wide selection of formal and informal dressing up attire, throughout the year.
If you join clubs they may have gatherings. Failing that, hold your own parties. All you need is finger food, booze and a music background.
Valentines. Day party, Easter, St Patrick’s Day party - St George’s Day, Halloween, Birthday - Anniversary - Graduation. Burns Nights etc.
Any excuse for a party and dress up.
Go for it and you may just have fun.
Sometimes we just have to get off our backside and do it ourselves rather than sitting at home wondering why we’re not invited. Just dress up.
Hopefully you’ll get dressed up to go out to a formal fun event.

Pants as well

Babamaman Fri 20-Dec-24 13:45:29

Totally agree with you. I get good housekeeping (through my bank a/c) and yes the prices are incredible! Who does go to ‘cocktail’ parties? Wearing all those glamorous expensive outfits?
Not me -
And all this jollynous ? Nah not me!

Usedtobeblonde Fri 20-Dec-24 13:34:03

My GD and I should be at a 30th birthday tonight.
It has had to be postponed as the birthday girl is stranded in Cape Verde where the fog is so dense that she says they can’t see out of the hotel windows.
I would have worn black trousers and a sequinned jumper from M&S.
I shall wear the same outfit when we have Christmas dinner out.
The Cape Verde couple have been warned it may be Tuesday before they can fly home.
A family party tomorrow for her has also been cancelled .

Flakesdayout Fri 20-Dec-24 13:33:41

I have just been to the Playgroup Christmas party with my DIL and two GD's (3 and 6 months) It was lovely as we started in the Church and sang Away in a Manger with the nativity story, then over to snack time in the hall where Santa arrived. All the children queued to see him in his red suit and every one said they were good as they got their little presents. I wore a long sleeved t-shirt with a decorated tree on the front with jeans. As for Christmas itself. On the day my sons and DIL's will arrive with the 2 GD. I shall wear comfy jeans and last years Next Christmas jumper in red. My Sons wear Xmas jumpers as do all the girls. One Son and DIL are staying over so next morning I will wear my sparkly Star top. Boxing day will then be a quiet affair as they all have DIL's parents to visit.

We always have an un-Christmas so spend a lot of time on the beach with the dogs. we always stop in a lovely chalet we go to for long weekends couple times a year including Christmas. Going on the beach Christmas day means warm jumpers and track bottoms plus trainers or boots so certainly not glam. I am past the age of parties really as I don't drink and cannot stand the noise now. I am going to Readers group soon have on a pretty floral jumper only have a Christmassy t-shirt so is a bit cold for that!

mabon1 Fri 20-Dec-24 12:54:45

I don't have anything sparkly, but I have beautifully embroidered jumpers.

Skydancer Fri 20-Dec-24 12:47:45

It’s great for the environment that so many of you will be wearing old clothes. You all sound great fun. For those of you doing Christmas Day swims I’ll think of you when I’m under my heated throw. How brave you are!
