Where are my invites?

Whilst downloading some library books onto my e-reader, I spent half an hour having a look through some women's magazines.

Who are these people that get invites to swanky, sophisticated parties over the holiday period, and swan off wearing a variety of ultra-expensive, sparkly gowns and shoes and bags - with one outfit alone costing over £1000?

Where are these joyful parties and upmarket soirees, full of cultured and interesting guests?

Next Monday evening my cousin and her husband are coming over for some drinks and a takeaway curry. I shall be wearing my classy M&S jogging pants and I might run to a jumper with a tiny bit of sparkle. On my feet will be my M&S slippers that have a hole in the sole that I'm clinging on to hoping a new pair will wing my way on 25th. That's about it for me.

I am happy to live vicariously through my fellow gransnetters exciting Christmas social calendars.

How many wonderful cocktail parties are you all attending and what will you be wearing?

Tuesday morning I'll be swanning round the house in my 'pre loved' Next dressing gown, the one with a moth hole on the backside of it (a much desired accessory). In the evening I have a gilt edged invitation to venture to the local public house to partake in fish 'n' chips (ketchup extra) with a choice of mushy or garden peas, followed by a pint of beer and a 60's disco. I will be wearing Levi jeans and a black t shirt, both from the exclusive Charity Shop. Cocktails may arrive later in the night in the form of gin and tonic with a slice of lemon in a pint glass - after that it'll be a knees up through to the early hours of Christmas Day. And we'll all have an amazing night winegrin

On Christmas Day I will be wearing a pair of stretchy velvet trousers and a red and black embroidered twin set, same as I have for the last 20 years since they were purchased from Tesco.

That sounds like my kind of night Bohemian. Send invite. grin (And I don't like ketchup so that'll save me some money).

We are decorating (not tinsel, but wallpaper etc) a bedroom over Christmas, as for once in years and years we won’t be hosting kids and numerous grandchildren . I will be cooking us a turkey dinner though.

I have done a laundry load today, and now have plenty of clean socks, so I'm ready for all events over the next week or two.
It's so important to keep one's standards high, don't you think.

Oh gosh, is it party time already? Anyone know where I left my sparkly tiara?

We are more selective about our Christmas socialising these days.

On Sunday DS is coming round to see us, this information was passed to DH whe he met son in the barber's shop. I will be wearing my jeans or fleece trousers with a nice warm fleece sweater.
On Christmas day we are going to friends for the day. For that occasion I shall wear my Christmas jumper from Tesco and pull-on trousers as my woulds from my recent keyhole surgery are still rather tender.

MiniMoon Thu 19-Dec-24 20:30:08

Wounds.

Christmas day will be spent with DS and family wearing leggings and santa jumper. On 30th we head off with 2 other couples on a coach trip to spend 3 nights in a hotel (sparkly attire required for the ladies). Can highly recommend it

Nice thread.

My Christmas Day wear will depend on which items of clothes make me itch the least[I did a thread about my still undiagnosed spots, some months ago].

As an aside, a few years ago I was in London. In Knightsbridge if I remember correctly.

I thought, let's stand here and see just how many people look like they have come off the catwalk, in catwalk model clothes.
It may have been me, but I only spotted one person who may have fitted the bill.
The rest looked perfectly ordinary to me.

I have a sparkly dress which I bought to go to a wedding in 2009. I know that because I came across the invitation today! I'm glad it still fits.
I've invited family here on 25th and DD's in-laws have kindly invited me to theirs on Boxing day.
Do you think I need a new dress?
😂🤣😅

BlueBelle Thu 19-Dec-24 21:22:08

I ve never been to a cocktail party so no difference there

I ll be wearing my swimsuit to do the Christmas Day swim then hot shower and into my Christmas jumper that ll do me

Katyj Thu 19-Dec-24 21:27:50

Well I’ve worn the same Christmas jumper for five years now so thought I deserved a change. I saw one in the Primark sale for a tenner, it’ll probably last another five 🤞 I don’t possess anything sparkly.

Patsy70 Thu 19-Dec-24 21:28:23

BlueBelle 😳. I wish I was a confident swimmer and could do that. Enjoy your swim! 🎄😊

I'm off to a Christmas lunch with friends tomorrow. Black jeans and black and gold Christmas jumper. On Christmas day I will welcome my family wearing a black top and trousers, with a black and silver sparkly jacket that I found in a charity shop about 10 years ago.

M0nica Thu 19-Dec-24 21:36:06

Well, I have really pushed the boat out. I have bought myself a festive headband, all baubles and tinsel to wear on Christmas day.

I will probably aso wear it to the social occasion of the season - a visit to the pantomime at the theatre in a local small town.

How many wonderful cocktail parties are you all attending and what will you be wearing?

I've had to miss all mine, sadly, due to having this nasty virus that's doing the rounds. My cocktail dress is velvet trousers and sparkly jumper are hanging forlornly in the wardrobe.

LadyGaGa Thu 19-Dec-24 21:51:10

Just come back from a cocktail party farmshop cafe with my lovely daughter. Wore my old Christmas jumper from Sainsbury’s that I swear has shrunk in the wash 😳 and the latest jeans from M and S. Unfortunately I forgot to put my belt on so they kept slipping down 😖 I’m sure I’ll make the style pages in Hello.

Allira Thu 19-Dec-24 21:55:49

I forgot to put my belt on so they kept slipping down
You need to eat more roast dinners, Christmas pud and chocolates!

SueDonim Thu 19-Dec-24 21:57:40

Why wait for invites? Throw your own party and be the belle of the ball! 💃👗👑

LadyGaGa Thu 19-Dec-24 22:02:17

Allira, it’s because my waist seems to have disappeared 🤣

Trisha99 Thu 19-Dec-24 22:09:20

No parties, cocktail or otherwise for us so what sparkly clothes I still have will stay in the wardrobe, and if I can part with them will be sold on Vinted.
I am a bit of a magpie when it comes to sparkles and sequins so have to have firm conversations with myself re not buying any more- step away from the glitter!
