Taking Christmas decorations down

We normally take our decorations down the day after New Years Day, but its so dark and miserable outside that I'm minded to leave them up for a while. It helps to cheer things up.
What do others do?

Ours is a smallish real tree which is going to need repotting in the spring.

I am taking mine down tommorow. I love my real tree and keep it in the garden for a couple of months, it looks lovely if we have snow or frost. Then we take it to be recycled.

I can’t understand this wanting to “get back to normal” thing.🤗

Me neither! January is dreary enough anyway.

Gdd2’s birthday is on the 6th, so might leave it till the 7th* this year. Our tree still looks lovely and fresh so I do always hate taking it down.

*did the same the year she was born. Had to zoom off 60 miles in a hurry to look after her little siblings.

We took ours down yesterday and DH has since been cleaning carpets. Our downstairs now looks like an expanded furniture van! Roll on to when we get back to normality again. It was a good Christmas though

We put them up first weekend in December and take them down after the New Year. I also have various fairy lights around the fireplace and the Sarah Miller winter cushions stay til mid Feb

Mine will come down tomorrow. I would have got rid before now, but I had friends round this evening, and fancied having the tree up when they were here.

The tree goes up somewhere around 23rd December. I don't like it up too early, as I get sick of it if it is up for too long. When Christmas is over I like to get back to normal, too. that makes me sound like Scrooge, but I do love Christmas - I just prefer it to be a week or so, rather than a month.

Mine will come down on the 6th, though I may well leave some of the lights up for longer.

I live alone too, but various visitors over Christmas period, so I leave all the decorations up until 5/6th January.
It cheers the place up.

They'll come down before midnight on the 5th.
I need to have a cull of decorations but charity shops won't want them in January.

As I live alone, I put them up Christmas Eve for the family Christmas Day and I took them down the day after, (Boxing Day).

Once Christmas and New Year is over, the decorations and lights don’t feel the same, so ours are all packed away and awaiting ds1 to come on Sunday to put them in the loft for us.

It does look bare but it’s nice to get back to normal.

BlueBelle Fri 03-Jan-25 22:54:20

All gone hooray hoovered and back to normal

Luminance Fri 03-Jan-25 22:50:50

Oh the usual happened, I took them down, everything looked drab so I got on and did some DIY to brighten the room.

We will start taking down the indoor decorations tomorrow. The trees will be the last to come down. It will take me a few days to pack everything away neatly into their boxes, then back into the cupboards where they will live until next Christmas. Not everything will be away by the 6th, but we will have made a good start.

Our window lights and outdoor lights will have their last chance to shine on Sunday, but the outdoor ones will have to wait until the first fine and dry weekend to be physically taken down, as this involves MrLP up a ladder - not good in wind or rain!

We have year round lights ( warm white ) on the magnolia tree by our front door. It lights up our corner, and makes people smile. At Christmas we add coloured lights to them.

I enjoy our decorations being up for the whole of December and until the 6th January. It always feels bare when they come down, but then I start to enjoy the extra space again!

Tree and lights down tomorrow. Other cards/decs been gradually removed since New Year’s day.
Daffodils arriving courtesy of Waitrose tomorrow afternoon, to add cheer, hopefully!

eazybee Fri 03-Jan-25 22:27:46

Take them down for Epiphany. Hate decorations going up at the beginning of December.

valdali Fri 03-Jan-25 22:13:34

Took mine down today. I usually like it when the living room's back to normal but I am missing my tree now.

rubysong Fri 03-Jan-25 21:34:00

We've all got our own traditions where decorations are concerned. I take ours down on 6th. Traditionally Christmas was celebrated for 12 days and twelfth night was the big finale, so the decorations should, I think, still be up for that.

Oopsadaisy1 Fri 03-Jan-25 21:26:39

Ours were packed away today, but I always have white fairy lights around the fireplace and mantelpiece that stay up all year round.

woodenspoon Fri 03-Jan-25 21:13:23

I took ours down yesterday and all packed away until next year. Once New Year’s Day has arrived I feel the decorations need to come down. They’ve been up since 1st December so they did well. We still have battery candles around and in lanterns.

Jaxjacky Fri 03-Jan-25 20:45:30

Ours will come down on Sunday, family all here tomorrow for dinner.

DollyD Fri 03-Jan-25 20:15:20

Taking mine down on the 6th as always but I love the coziness and cheerfulness of the window lights and tree so much, I would happily keep them up till March if I could. 😊
