Presents to myself

Every year, since I was widowed , I get myself a decent present for Christmas

The first year year it was a kit to make myself a spinning wheel, another year a serious readers lamp and so on. The kit was a brilliant present and occupied me for weeks

I have seen what I wanted this year and have secured it. Estee Lauder beauty Favourites gift set, plus a couple of perfumes to spend the £50 needed to secure the favourites bargain set. Ok I have saved a lot of money but it is perfect timing for me as I am exploring the Estee Lauder range

I will wrap the set for me to open on Christmas day.

No advent calendars for me this year, I was disappointed with the one I had last year

That gift set looks really lovely, sometimes the colours are too bright in the make up. This year they are much more subtle.

It makes so much sense to buy yourself a gift at least you know you will like it!

It is my birthday next month and I have booked onto a one day craft course and my DH was very pleased I chose my own gift as it saves him a job. grin

I don't think I could buy a present for myself. I'd want something extortionate like a fabulous piece of jewellery or booking a posh holiday. I'll just be happy with my usual presents of chocs and hand cream.

Enjoy your gifts Karmalady what a lovely idea.

I often treat myself around my birthday and at Christmas, why shouldn’t we.

Great idea to treat yourself like this, and the good thing is you know exactly what you want.

I just have to ask do you use your wheel to spin or is is purely decorative?
I used to spin and found it very relaxing, using wool from my own sheep
Might be tempted to give it a dust down !

I've done this for years- at least I always get something I like!

I started buying myself Christmas presents when my H had dementia and didn’t know what it was all about.
Since he died I have done the same.
The first thing was a Radley handbag and then an iPad.
I buy nice clothes and things I want instead of need.
My friend who is a lot better off financially than me buys herself really good jewellery, she says she knows he would approve!!

I’ve been hmmming and anhhhing, about an all-singing all-dancing Ninja , but do I really need it ? I’m on my own - more often than not, I visit them and have meals with the children - so still 🤔

Dust her down Gwllt I have a herd of spinning wheels

That kit was an ashford wee peggy and I use her a lot. I have 4 wheels altogether and my first ever wheel was a vintage rappard wee peggy, which I took apart and renovated. I bought the Ashford after my husband died, I needed something engrossing to do

I also have a kromski sonata and a majacraft suziepro

I love to spin, it is so relaxing and I often spin a jumper weight from tops from the likes of John Arbon. The wheel I am using right now is the kromski and I am spinning a fluff called squish, which is alpaca and merino. I am going to make myself a shawl from that

The reason I buy myself a Christmas present is that my late husband always tried to buy me something special and I need more than chocolates or flowers, to fill that hole during the Christmas season

What an excellent thing to do, karmalady and a lovely tribute to your husband. I have been known to treat myself to a wee present now and again and why not? Your choice sounds lovely. An added bonus for me, if I wrapped the present now, is that I will have forgotten what I bought so it will be a real surprise when I open it on Christmas morning.

I do this every year for my birthday. It’s my birthday next week and I’m planning on buying myself a nice bottle of perfume.

My son has a shop and I always think it’s a bit sad when someone comes in and says ‘ Oh that’s lovely. Now who could I give it to….”

I will be wrapping it as soon as it arrives, I won`t even peek at what is inside. I bought perfume for the £50 I needed to spend. Such a hedonistic present

As well as that I get myself a video to watch, after all I only see family for a couple of days. I do like the quiet time. I think I might get the new Downton. I don`t want treats to eat, I am a nice healthy weight now and I soon pile it on and then it takes me all spring to lose it again. If they are in the house, I eat them

Lathyrus3, I think many of us have struggled with `spoiling` ourselves. It is nice when we can break free from that thought

The good thing about buying yourself a present is that you always get what you want.😄

rafichagran Sun 28-Sept-25 12:10:12

Good for you.

Yes, I’m not too bad at buying things for myself , but I struggle to buy flowers.

And yet I love them, they cheer me up and I can afford to buy some each week.

So why is it so hard that I pass by all the time……..

Well done karmalady such a lovely thing to do. You deserve to treat yourself and have the things that you love in your life. Long may you enjoy your presents to yourself.

I buy my own presents too at Christmas...from my husband,he has alzheimers now so I always wrap it up from him to me...

We have been married 47 years and its a problem what to get each other, we buy what we need throughout the year, so now we have a week away in this country, hubby lets me chose and organise it...both happy

Spinning wheel - great! My mother got a lot of pleasure out of hers.
Serious Readers lamps are a con. A perfectly standard bulb and an adequate but unremarkable way of supporting it. No way worth the premium price.

Lupatria Mon 29-Sept-25 14:29:48

i always buy myself a present at christmas and on my birthday. i even buy myself an easter egg!
this christmas it's going to be a bottle of chanel no 5 [birthday present was a bottle of opium - i have expensive tastes in perfumes].

We get an advent calendar every year but a bit disappointed with what's on offer. We've got a couple of Walkers Shortbread Advent calendar ones this year that I found on Amazon.
Something a bit different.

I am not one for beauty products but I have recently bought an oil painting for myself. I had been looking since before Covid.
