Has anyone looked at the cost of M & S food (Christmas section)? I had to do a double take. The prices are horrendous. You'd need to take out a loan to pay for it !!

I can understand Waygu beef being that expensive, but I would make my own pie. Can anyone enlighten this French resident on how much a button goose is now in the UK?

Not sure what you mean Manmie I don’t know the word ‘button’ used in this context?

No wonder they are closing down in certain towns, its way too expensive now.
TBH, I think their chicken is the worst I have ever tasted, it’s rubbery.

I am in the S E, and we have three M & S Food Halls within 3-4 miles, they are always busy.

The M & S department store in our nearest shopping mall relocated to the space vacated by Debenhams, it has doubled in size.

Ours is busy too.

Are they?
I didnt know that.

I know they are closing about 11 of their cafes, hadn't heard about any stores. Although a couple have closed recently I think.

A big new flagship store is meant to be opening in Bristol soon.

Is that in addition to the one at Cribbs, AmberGran or are they relocating it?

Couldn’t believe the prices. I too just buy a few treats from there but can’t believe the prices this year! I’m so glad Aldi do a similiar brochure I’ll just have to pretend I got them mixed up!😂😂

Aldi uses the same supplier, you get the same food for a fraction of the price.

You really don't. grin

Suppliers are not processors. Food from Aldi and M&S may be processed in the same factory (or they may not - I don't know), but as I said upthread, they will be on different production lines and made to different recipes.

Aldi food can be very good - I'm not saying otherwise - in fact some lines may be better than M&S, but it is not the same.

I can confirm you're 100% correct from insider knowledge. My 'informant' is connected to one of the other big supermarkets not M&S but confirms M&S have their own recipes etc that are not the same as Aldi, Tesco, Sainsbury's etc. That person also informs that when a company investigates having an Indian based call centre they are invariably shown the M&S one because it's superior and staffed by excellent English speakers. The others not so much.
I have no personal connection to M&S, but yes I do buy some food from there, also Sainsbury's and certain items from Aldi and Lidl, some of which I prefer to M&S's offerings.

Ditch them and go to ALDI, Tesco, Sainsbury and Iceland.

Lots of special goodies at less than half the price.

Enjoy.

Never eat it. We have chicken, it does a meal for two days. Buy our veg from a local farm. Make my own trifle and have Viennetta/ ice cream for folks that don't like trifle. I do buy GF food from M&S but that's out of necessity. I do like the fact they care where their food comes from, but it doesn't matter where you shop. Prices are ridiculous, but it's worldwide.

Visgirl- mùst be rich 😁😆

M&S used to be known for the quality of their food but not any more. I bought one of their Christmas hampers and it was very disappointing. The shortbread wasn't made with butter and was greasy and tasteless. The luxury mince pies are worth buying but the ones from my local Spar are just as good.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 15-Oct-25 07:23:30

mum2three I buy M & S shortbread biscuits year round as they are DH’s favourite.

Personal comments are unnecessary and rude.

My butchers are offering them from £140to £180.

Too small for our family. We always have Turkey to feed the 5000😄.

But if I had a choice I’d have a rib of beef.

I thought we'd had a welcome rest from those sort of rude comments for quite a while.

Our farm shop - goose
Free Range Goose 6kg (feeds 7-9) £130
Free Range Goose 6.5kg (8-10) £140
Free Range Goose 7kg (8-10) £150

If I was called rich I would be very pleased.
But hey ho.
Seems to touch a nerve with some.

If you are that bothered by it, give it away.

Button geese were the small ones about 5 to 6lbs. Waitrose used to sell them.

Jaxjacky Wed 15-Oct-25 09:55:00

Thank you Mamie.

Because this is an interesting discussion about the quality and provenance of meats at Christmas. Not about making comments on a poster's wealth or spending habits. Visgirl was neither boasting nor making any statement about her bank balance, so it was rude to single her out.

fancythat Wed 15-Oct-25 09:59:40

Still dont get it.
Started a thread about the subject.

fancythat Wed 15-Oct-25 10:00:22

We all quote on other peoples' comments all the time.
That is what the quote button is for.

kittylester Wed 15-Oct-25 10:03:59

But, as said previously, it's very rude to comment on others people's personal circumstances unless asked to do so.

That is what the quote button is for.

So when a poster says they get the food boxes put by at Lidl for £1, or that they buy a top in charity shop fie £2, we all quote them, saying, X or Y must be poor.
I don't think so. 😆

fancythat Wed 15-Oct-25 10:30:50

No. That is rude, in the same way that the opposite is well, the opposite.
Is what I thought until this thread and the one I have started.
