Advent Calendars

There are such lovely Advent Calendars about. Nowadays you can get them with so much more than just a chocolate per day.

I have given them to the children and grandchildren in the past, some home made, some bought.

Favourites have been :

murder mystery/escape room games with a clue a day
Recipes
Games
A magic trick to learn each day
Of course, the Lego projects
Harry Potter socks (went down particularly well!)

I haven't got any with perfumes, cosmetics or drinks, although they are really tempting.

But this year I have told them I'm not giving any. The DGC have so many benevolent relatives and grandparents that they will probably get enough.

By the time they have eaten a chocolate, tried out a recipe, read a story, played a game and tried on a new hairslide, it sounds to me like they will be suffering Advent Stress Syndrome.especially as most of the days are school days.

It's a shame as I would love to give some of these calendars but it is getting a bit much.

Still, I love reading about them.

So let us know what calendars you have seen and who you would love to give them to, and what calendars you are treating yourselves to.

My daughter always gives me an advent calendar and I really enjoy opening it every day, eating the wee chocolate and looking at the nativity scene until Christmas Day she’s really so kind I love her to bits

I can't be trusted to have an advent calendar. They never last past 2nd December.

Theyr a lovely tradition.

I must start looking today

I always treat myself to a corny just-little-pictures one. Never had one as a child, so I’m making up for it!

I’ve never bought any with chocolate or anything else.

I am a fan of Advent Calendars.

I get DH a wine one, as it’s a good way to find new wines.

I have purchased the M & S Beauty one for me and DD for many years.

All the GC get personalised chocolate ones from us.

I also send DH links to several swish beauty/fragrance ones, hopefully he will surprise me.

I have put two dog treat ones on my grocery order. One each for my grandpuppies grin.

Advent calendars to me are the beautiful glittery German ones we had in the 60s - nothing inside but a little illustration. There were 3 of us and we had to take turns opening the windows.
I don’t like the ones today and sadly can’t find any of the old-style ones to buy.

You can usually get those ones at Cards for Christmas sales (I think that's what it's called) often in Churches.

Love an Advent calendar. Always buy them for my Grandchildren, this year I bought them "Squishmellows" ones with little toys inside.

My DH buys himself one with little bottles of wine inside and he buys me the JL one, our pre Christmas treat.

I usually treat myself to an Angela Harding calendar as the Lino prints are so beautiful.

This year my DD3 has given me a St Eval calendar with a different scented tea light each day.

I’m really looking forward to trying out different scents.

You can still get them at museums and art galleries.

Personally I hate the ones with gifts in with a venom. Advent is about preparing for Christmas not celebrating with gifts because you can't wait. It's just another way to make money out of people to me.

I bought a lovely one from the national trust this year- no chocolate, expensive make-up or alcohol- just an old-fashioned picture to open every day!

It won't be long before pre- Advent calendar calendars are on sale, and people will buy them!

I still haven't seen a Christmas tree yet and it's November 6th- come on people...!

I always buy nativity scene chocolate ones in M&S to make some reference to Christmas for them

My daughter aged 44 insists on an advent calendar and this year it contains little books of the Mr and Little Miss Men!!

A few years ago I bought a wooden one for the DGCs which hinges open like a book and has 24 drawers. Every year I look out for small items to put in the drawers. This year the most interesting items are tiny mouth organs and friendship bracelets. The brothers aged now 7 and 10 really like it.

I’ve still got a box full of advent calendars that I’ve bought over the years. It saddens me that children are no longer excited to open a window each day on their glittery calendar just to see a pretty picture of a candle or a Robin. The German ones were definitely the best. I now buy a calendar that I know my grandchildren will like ( Pokémon, Minecraft etc) and prefer not to get ones containing chocolate. I’ll always remember buying my son a Teenage Ninja Turtle one and finding pictures of pizza behind the windows sad.

Imarocker Sat 08-Nov-25 15:00:29

I bought DD one that had a mini jigsaw for each day and they fitted together to make one big one. This year she has 24 little boxes each with a tiny book. Each book has the first pages of a classic novel.

I give all my children and grandchildren advent calendars, only the chocolate ones, I even buy my hubby one too. My ex daughter in law always treats me to a quirky one like teas or hot chocolate etc
My grandchildrens advents go into a advent box (I make hamper style grandchildren boxes) with Christmas clothes, toys, sweets, activities such as games, colouring, etc etc and they game them 1st Dec each year...

alisonsmith4 Sat 08-Nov-25 15:21:38

I’ve even seen a Halloween Advent Calendar! Where do I start? I could weep!😂

Emeraldforest Sat 08-Nov-25 15:54:00

I've bought all sorts for the grandchildren, there's a great selection on Amazon. My own children had a chocolate one each, until I finished the cross stitch one then I squashed 3 sweet into each pocket! I had to keep refilling that one!
I treated myself to a fabric and sewers one a few years ago, that was a lovely thing to open every day.

Rosie51 Sat 08-Nov-25 16:01:34

I've treated myself to two advent calendars. One from Becky's Sewing Studio and the other from Beyond The Pink Door. The Beyond The Pink Door one only has 12 days to it so won't start on 1st December. I had the German calendars a couple of times as a child, loved the sparkle and traditional pictures behind the doors. I shall buy an advent candle and burn that each day.
