That's Christmas Ruined Then

You know every year you read all the stories of the mouldy veg and the rancid turkeys and not being able to get any pigs in blankets and how it absolutely RUINED their Christmas?

And you think to yourself "get a grip it's just a bit of food, hardly the end of the world"

Well..and I'm almost shaking whilst typing...Sainsbury's are not going to be delivering my 2 tubs of TWIGLETS. I'm absolutely bereft. Christmas is the only time I have them and as I tip them into a bowl I think of my Mum, and how magical Christmas seemed way back then. And not only will I have no twiglets, but they've substituted them with a pack of cheese and onion crisps - when I already have 2 on my order.

Well, that's my Christmas RUINED - I'm off to report this to the Daily Mail.

Signed - Inconsolable and indignant ferry23

Well. Just returned from our extended family lunch where I of course recounted my twiglet woes and my nephew's wife gasped in horror and said she also didn't get her twiglets! So a multiple horror story in one family.

Mind you, she also had her Sainsbury's delivery this morning and it would have come from the same store, so no surprise really.

I think Lord Sainsbury has a lot to answer for and I may have to quiz him in the New Year. Which is a ploy to get a year's supply.

Alas ferry you will have to plod on regardless, these things are sent to try us😁 so be noble and rise above it.

I spent one run up to Christmas in search of a M&S Christmas, iced, madeira cake. I visited our local branch every day for a fortnight, friends and relatives were asked to keep an eye out for the elusive cake. I eventually discovered that it wasn't being produced that year because of covid. I was ridiculously upset about not having my precious cake.
This years (ridiculously overpriced!) version is happily sitting in my larder!

You should count yourself lucky they still even make Twiglets Madame.
l thought they had becone extinct along with Duncans Wall Nut Whips and Arctic Rolls

Ah Duncans Walnut whips, the best!
As for Twiglets, a couple of years ago I had a notion for them as I'd not had them in years. Oh the disappointment. Not only did they taste unpleasant they were very short. I'm sure they used to be longer.!

I realised to my horror that I'd almost run out of milk so crossed the road to Lidl at least 100yards away

It was practically deserted at 5pm it closed at 6 I found milk and also remembered I could do with some fruit, veg, nuts, eggs, wine, tissues.....

I spoke to a woman who was looking for a cut price turkey!
I tried not to sound surprised and asked her if she was cooking tomorrow. It turned out she wasn't so why the turkey? People are strange. I looked for twiglets on your behalf Ferry. But saw none 😟

I'm distraught also as I haven't been able to get Twiglets. I did see drums of them early on but I wanted a bag of small bags as once that drum was opened they would soon be gone.

Don't forget to provide a 'sad face' picture for the DM and tell them how much your house is worth.

KKOB Wed 24-Dec-25 22:18:38

But did you remember to get the diver's helmet, ironing board, blow-up canoe and kitty litter ?

Grammaretto Wed 24-Dec-25 22:25:31

What do you eat leeds? if you can't stand Twiglets or Baileys 😟

Jaycee19 Wed 24-Dec-25 22:35:40

My grandchildren loved eating their grandad's twiglets whenever they visited so I bought a multi bag in Asda before going to see them. They were so happy until they tried one each declaring they tasted disgusting, I had to agree. Yuck.

Waitrose delivered two bags of Twiglets DD yesterday.

Allira Wed 24-Dec-25 22:45:49

🤫 Don't tell DH but I forgot to buy the clotted cream.

I think I need Twiglets, so good for you, full of B vitamins!

I have just been sitting ,enjoying my first drink and thinking about the family who are no longer here. I was feeling a bit down but this post has made me giggle and smile.
Sorry about the twiglets.
I think this is my first ever Gransnet post (smile)

Ah! My oven went weird and despite careful attention to cooking times and temperatures I burnt three Delia recipe Christmas cakes in a row. Finally found an oven thermometer but for some reason the oven has been perfectly fine since then. I have subsequently made 2 successful cakes but the three failures got me worried about the turkey tomorrow - especially as I'm supposed to cook it and carry it down the road for a shared lunch.... Will the oven play up again? At least I can check it as I go which isn't allowed for the first 4 hours of a Christmas cake 🤣 of course, we could always have a power cut ......

Fancythat- hilarious. At least she had choice of returning some, we hope.grin

I think she ate some/gave them away/saved some for a later date.

Every year if someone asked if my mam had 'got everything' on christmas eve, after shops shut- she would answer, "well its too late now if i havent"- and now i live by that as well.(Not a plan that went down well the christmas our turkey was rancid i can tell you!)But i can say i hate twiglets so no love lost there- im a marmite hater. But when i tried twiglets as a child i never tasted much marmite, they just tasted of nothing much to me, and were very hard.

Nannan2 Thu 25-Dec-25 08:42:28

Merry holidays to everyone, no matter what holiday you celebrate.🥰And today? No baileys for me as im on antibiotics for chest infection.🙄🫤But christmas is NOT ruined.😆

my daughter was missing milk off her online delivery yesterday! unavailable and no suitable substitute.

Pity I can't send some milk, everyone here seems to have bought a litre of 'just in case we need it' milk so there's a freezer full of the stuff, as well as a Pringle mountain, that'll soon be demolished though!
I always recall going into a small electrical shop in November, run by a couple of Asian brothers and one was unpacking a load of Duracell batteries, when I asked if we were due power cuts he told me they opened at 8am on 25th Dec for a few hours and there was always a queue then a stream of desperate, guilty-looking men buying batteries, they sold more that morning than the rest of the year!

Had already polished off my slab of xmas cake i had bought earlier in december- when my lovely GD who'se started a baking course in college, turned up (for our special xmas booking to see a Charles Dickens based play together)bearing a beautifully iced small proper christmas cake, just right size about 6 by 6 inches, for which she had won award for best made snowman.(complete with his scarf and a tree too) and made especially for me! All wrapped in celophane& glittered ribbon, so beautifully presented i almost darent open or cut it! Almost. It was laced with brandy & rum as the teacher showed them how to 'feed it' each week up to christmas break. Before the marzipan&icing stage. And had lovely plump cherries etc.My goodness was much better than any in the shops! I was SO proud of her as shes only just started the course last september. And i am very happy she made it just for me.I've asked her if she will make me one every year going forward😁

Nannan2 Thu 25-Dec-25 09:12:06

Its square too so different from most shop bought ones.I cut off two slabs yesterday with a cuppa after i got back from xmas eve shop onslaught, to perk me up- i was too full to eat Dinner till gone 7pm.😆I think its my best gift this year, but i'd best not tell rest of GC that.Merry Christmas, GN, see you in New Year.🎅🤶

Nannan2 Thu 25-Dec-25 09:17:13

One christmas i ordered an ice- cream bombe from Sainsbury's(a kind of ice- cream 'snowy' dessert) and they had substituted it with a bath bombe- i wouldnt have minded so much but i didnt have a bath then only a shower.😂

HelterSkelter1 Thu 25-Dec-25 12:20:12

Well done your GD Nannan2. I had alittle tear in my eye reading your lovely post. You must be so proud of her. And she must love you to bits!
