Oreo

I use tinned custard for trifle, but it does need to heated up first in order to set when cold.

I didn’t know that, thanks!

Thank you Esmay, that’s good advice.

I did use more than recommended but perhaps not enough ? Thanks

I’m rather worried now. I haven’t made a trifle for a few years but the family has decided that we should have one on Boxing Day. 🤞 the custard sets.

If you run out of custard powder try adding some cornflour to a little cold milk and addi it to the hot mixture gently bringing it up to the boil stirring all the time. Take off the heat before it catches or the burnt taste will remain.
I stopped buying custard powder after I found that I got a better result with cornflour .sugar ,vanilla and a little yellow food colouring (the basis of custard powder) mixed as I like it .
I prefer it to have a stronger vanilla taste ,but I could add more vanilla to commercial custard powder .
If I remember correctly - I stopped using custard powder after struggling to get it thick enough .

You need to make a ‘set’ custard, as opposed to a ‘pouring’ custard (for a pudding)l

I think you need to use quite a bit more custard powder.

Yes, I always pour it all back into the saucepan and bring it up to the boil.

Is the milk hot enough when you add it?

Has anyone else had issues with the custard not setting, when making a trifle?
Last year I thought it was because the custard powder was past its best before date! Today I opened a new tin of custard powder, added a little more to the milk, than the recommended amount, but it’s still not setting? I don’t understand……….
