Christmas Decorations Storage

Firstly I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year ....

I wondered where you all store your Christmas decorations.

I was thinking of putting mine in the loft/attic (to make some room) but I have read it is not a good idea because of the extreme temperature fluctuations.

For the fragile tree decs, I have a cube with layers of segregated spaces into which 1 bauble is placed. That is put onto a shelf in a spare bedroom and under the desk is popped 2 big red bags of other house decs.

I know that there are lots of decs in the loft that need sorting out, that is a job for the summer when it is not so cold.

Mine are stored in an old cardboard box and live in a high cupboard which I can no longer reach, so I wait until a tall person visits (either of my two sons) to put them away until next Christmas.
Happy New year everyone. 😊

Like Blue Saphire, I can’t get storage into or out of the loft since mr I died.

The Christmas decs are in large plastic storage boxes in an unused wardrobe. But I need the space,

Thank you so much for all your replies.

It's good to hear that your decorations didn't come to any harm, those of you that store them in the loft.

If I do decide to put them up there, I would have to rely on my son to take them up and bring them back down again.

I do not own a shed or a garage unfortunately.

Wow that must have taken you ages loopylindy!

butterandjam I would love to leave mine up all year round too. As everything looks so pretty.

I bought lots of Christmassy boxes from Dunelm a few years ago in their New Year sale and I’m so impressed with everything being stored so neatly in a wardrobe in the spare room that I don’t like having to unpack them at Christmas time. If everything went into the loft each year I’d never get them downstairs. Last year was the first time in years that I got the tree out of the loft ( partly because I feared that the dog would eat everything). It then remained in the living room dismantled till this year and I might just remove the ornaments and leave it up till next year but decorate it seasonally…( will get the grandchildren to help me).

Our Christmas decorations were always stored in the loft. None came to harm in just under 50 years.

As numbers of decorations have reduced they have found new homes under ottoman beds, much easier and safer than me climbing aloft.

I've always stored ours in the attic. There are temperature extremes up there, but they don't seem to have had a detrimental effect on the decorations.

I did, however, put a battery operated decoration up in the attic last year and forgot to take the batteries out first. From last year to this, the batteries had all 'rotted' and messed up the decoration. Note to self - take all batteries out first.

Good reminder about batteries. I had a similar experience a couple of years back.

The first Christmas after DH died, mine came down from the loft, never to go back up, as I cannot manage the loft ladder.
They are now kept in plastic storage boxes in the garage, along with the Christmas trees.

We need to rationalise them as we have far too many but it's the wrong time of year to send them to the charity shop.

After 2024 Christmas, knowing we would be downsizing and probably only be having one Christmas tree instead of two, I sorted through all our Christmas decorations and sorted into a separate box all those I did not think I would use again. This came with us to our new home and in mid Novemeber was donated to a local charity shop. They were dlighted with them, coming just as they were gearing up for Christmas

Your decoration sounds beautiful Butterandjam and how lovely to enjoy it throughout the year.

Many years ago I was going through a phase of not sleeping at night. So, in the middle of the night I armed myself with scissors, sticky tape, a huge roll of bubble wrap and a strip heater. I made individual bags for each of our considerable collection of glass decorations (over 1000 and some over 50yrs old.) In all that time only a couple of breakages and no spoilage from damp.

Ours used to go in the loft for years and seemed fine.

Now we store them in boxes at the top of a large built-in wardrobe in a spare room as it's not so easy to climb into the loft now.

Norah Fri 02-Jan-26 14:44:45

All our bedrooms have big cupboards - Christmas storage.

TerriBull Fri 02-Jan-26 14:39:08

I have an old Victorian blanket box from a couple of houses ago, which my husband thinks is horrible, so it now languishes in the garage, but it's an ideal place for the Christmas decorations. I do like to remember where they are. One year I couldn't find them soon after we'd moved to where we are now and I thought they'd inadvertently been taken to the dump. Thankfully that was not the case.

We used to store things in the loft until we had lagging insulation put up there.

AuntieE Fri 02-Jan-26 14:36:33

I keep mine in the attic and nothing has come to harm.

I use lidded plastic storage boxes of the kind that have clasps that hold the lids in place, and wrap glass baubles and other delicate things in paper before the go into the plastic boxes.

I have in the last few years chosen slightly smaller boxes, so that each box is not too heavy to carry downstairs and upstairs when full.

I am currently hardening my heart to dispose of decorations that are no longer being used!

M0nica Fri 02-Jan-26 14:30:17

For the last 55 years we have kept the christmas decorations in the loft, I still have many of the tree decorations I had 50 years, so the atmosphere up there cannot be too damaging.

In 2025 we moved to a house where loft storage is not suitable, so I have had a huge 'loft' cupboard built in one of the bedrooms. The suitcases are in there, and there is a huge shelf for the Christmas decorations.

Sarnia Fri 02-Jan-26 14:29:30

The heavier boxes of decorations go in a huge cupboard under the stairs and the lighter boxes into the loft. We never have any problems.

butterandjam Fri 02-Jan-26 14:24:41

About half a century ago, someone sent my children a clear glass star (each) for the christmas tree. From then on, every year I bought some more clear glass ornaments for the tree. Icicles, angels, birds... IKEA often had them.. Back then, antique lead crystal drops from old chandeliers, went for pennies in junk shops and jumbles. Yet another collection of cheap treasure was born..all hung on the tree every christmas then wrapped and put away.

By the time all the kids had grown and flown I'd accumulated scores of these clear glass and crystal shiny danglers; we moved house and acquired a huge bay window. For our first Christmas in new home, instead of decorating a tree, I painted two white broom handles, fixed them across the bay window and suspended all the glass and crystals from them on different lengths of invisible thread. It was so absolutely gorgeous I never took them down.... still twinkling in the sun and casting rainbows round the room all year round , 5 years later.
Christmas is now relaxed and effortless, no tree, decs always "up" and the children have taken over all the hosting.

Greyduster Fri 02-Jan-26 13:56:46

I have just finished divesting my tree of its decorations. Apart from some rather special ones that have “history” or a particular connection to one or other of the children, they live in chocolate tins which are housed in large cardboard boxes in the loft - always have. Never noticed any deterioration. I took the opportunity to have a bit of a cull this year. I now have to wait for someone to put them back up there.

JamesandJon33 Fri 02-Jan-26 13:53:01

We have deep cupboards under the roof. Everything goes in them,

AmberGran Fri 02-Jan-26 13:45:43

Ours used to be in the loft but have been in the garage for some years now. I'm not sure why temperature fluctuation would harm decorations? All I am really wary of is mould if there is any damp.

ginny Fri 02-Jan-26 13:33:29

We stored ours in the loft for years. Now we don’t like clambering up there so they live in the understairs cupboard.

tanith Fri 02-Jan-26 13:32:23

I have a very large cupboard in the spare room so it’s in a box there.

kittylester Fri 02-Jan-26 13:30:46

We put the Christmas trees in the loft but baubles etc are kept in a pine blanket box in the lounge. It has a big Swiss cheese plant on it generally so dh has to be around.
