What's the worst present you've ever received, either for Christmas, birthday or another occasion?

Mine was a small box of Dairy Milk, from a close friend of many years.... mine to him was a golf bag, to put his clubs in (he was an Estate Agent, so not on minimum wage, like I was then)

First indication that this present hadn't been given a lot of thought was the wrapping paper - holly, robins and the like. Fair enough if it had been a Christmas present, but it was for my birthday more than two months after Christmas. The contents? A pair of silver coloured tapered dinner candles. The generous donor of this odd gift? My husband (shortly before he became my ex). sad

Both me and my sister got almost the same prezzies as children and we both had hair cuts really short. We were girlie girls and wanted real hair pony tails like our friends had.
So one Christmas we asked for wigs to make our dreams come true- We got them , but they were weird plastic ones that looked awful- Thanks Mum n Dad!

My Secret Santa present was a copy of the Big Issue

First Christmas present I got from my husband in 1979 was a stainless steel butter dish ? Glad to say improved over the years!

My colleague and I once received a very small box of milk tray from our boss (a multi millionaire !) (he also asked everyone to give him the stamps from purchases ofpetrol for the company cars !) from the reps who visited the office we got enormous boxes of sweets, perfume, etc !) ........oh and once I received a plastic pop pop bead necklace from my M i L ...and wore it Christmas day to show everyone ....my BiL promptly said Oh but she's probably got you something else ....she hadn't ...they all received nice woolly jumpers (not hand knitted), perfume, clothing ...............dont think she like me grin

A boyfriend's mother once gave me a tool for putting holes in belts.

For my first Christmas as a wife my MiL gave me a pair of oven gloves and a wrap around apron ( as worn by Hilda Ogden). I was so upset and she obviously realised, for thereafter she always bought me beautiful, personal, thoughtful gifts.

My fiancé bought me an umbrella. He then ran off with a man. Perhaps his boyfriend would have liked an umbrella.

How funny are these! For my 21st my MIL gave me a set of huge used silver soup spoons - they'd been in use in their guest house before I got them!

Things didn't improve over the years especially for our sons. One year they were each given a pair of motorcycle gloves - they were about 10 & 13 at the time and called them Walter Batty gloves grin

good thread!?

SunnySusie - that was a really lovely, touching story, as well as being amusing.

I always buy myself slippers in a size smaller than I need as they always stretch so much, so those slipper would probably be a perfect fit for you smile

From an ex, who I knew was mean, for my birthday 3 chocolates in a box and a plastic pound shop dildo. He was an ex from that night.

I can't recall any really bad presents, but a friend of mine was once given a doggie pooper scooper for her birthday. And it wasn't a joke present, it was given in all seriousness.

Two padded coat hangers and a ten shilling note - from my well off grandmother!

I had a friend that gave me two pairs of shoes from Next - they were second hand and the wrong size. We were both hard up at the time, but I wouldn’t have ever done that to someone.

Another christmas present from a partner was a electric kettle - he was soon my ex partner.

A friend of mine got a travel mug and a clipboard for Mother's Day, which I thought was sad. She works in a care home.... (she doesn't use Gransnet so she won't see this)

From the ex, a wooden fruit bowl carved in the shape of an up turned open hand. Hideous enough you might think, but all the fingers were exactly the same length and looked positively deformed! Years later, I almost wished I had kept it as I longed to amputate three of the fingers and give it back to him!!!

That took me a moment GR ?

Some of these presents sound ok though.

One Christmas my sister asked mum for a shirt with broad stripes but after weeks of looking could only find one with narrow stripes so bought it. A few days before Christmas she rang to tell me she had seen a broad striped one in a local shop and was delighted then followed up with you can have the other one! I'm middle child and a different size to sister.

A cuckoo clock for a birthday albeit a Bavarian made one!

I asked DH for something nice for the bathroom, he bought me a wallpaper hanger's sponge. Practical rather than pretty.

The deep-fat fryer I got from OH years ago, and is now a family joke, seems positively thoughtful compared with most of yours! We now buy each other charity gifts, such as goats for developing countries.

As a teenager, an aunt gave me a lilac coloured petticoat for Christmas that had clearly seen better days. The nylon had rubbed up and was all bobbly.

My son has never forgotten the sweater and matching hat and scarf his much loved grandma gave him when he was about 5. She had consulted me and we had agreed that a sweater in a dull old gold would go very well with some trousers he had.

The sweater she knitted was actually in day glow orange and, as I said, came with matching hat and scarf. DS went visibly pale when he saw it. I never made him wear it, but he would always volunteer to do so when Grandma visited.

A jar of pickled onions and, on another occasion, a book of stamps
