Because we brought up their parents we are elevated to the position of grand masters of knowing everything, being able to give the best hugs and kisses, the best tickles, the time to listen, playing spiderman and rolling around the floor covered in pretend webs, getting covered with paint, flour, play doh and having the time to laugh and listen to all their stories and treasure them for the short time we will be in their young lives.

Its another chance to re-live the wonderful days when we had our own kids, only better!!

Your children will always be your children, no matter how old they are, their spouses also become your children and you worry and care about them as much. When we are lucky enough to have Grandchildren come along and top up your family, that caring continues but with that extra element of heartwarming joy and fun. I think the Grand in Grandparent stands for encompassing ALL our children, grown and newly born.

Its a double "Grand" for me not having any children myself, I married a gorgeous man who had two boys. A mother and now a grandmother of a wonderful girl. A dream come true.

Being a grandparent, for me, is a chance to be both child and parent - to see and enjoy both sides of the whole growing up thing.

Being a GRAND - parent means giving the kiddies Help when they need a bit extra, Confidence when they are unsure, Sharp words when necessary,
Lots of treats, Endless love and attention and the knowledge that they are always welcome. It is also important to always be a support to their parents.

It is grand being a grandmother to 7 lovely grandchildren and loving them in a very relaxed way.

Enjoying seeing the development of that tiny baby right through to its first steps and development into a small person. The chance to enjoy what you couldn't when you were a parent as you were often so busy and stressed. Being able to offer help and advice and more than anything else the overwhelming feeling of love you have for your children's children.

Seeing the look of joy on their faces when we walk through the door after a long absence.

Grandparents are Grand because we've done it all before and so don't stress about every little thing. It's Grand being a Grandparent because when you've had enough you can just hand them back and go for a quiet drink :D

Becoming Grandparents meant to us a sign of achievement on the upbringing of our own children and giving them the confidence to further on the family name and traditions, giving our advice when asked for it but smiling sweetly when it was not taken, being available when any emergencies arose with any input we could give to help, never saying "I told you so" and being ready with a hankie when the tears start which they do in any family.

Being a Grandmother is being prepared to get your hands dirty and do a few sleepless nights, putting yourself out, long after you really have the stamina to do so

eleanorsteed Sat 27-Sept-14 20:38:56

It is a wonderful gift from your children

Grand is the size of the love you feel when you see your grandchildren. I was lucky enough to be my daughters birthing partner and the emotion of seeing my first grandchild come into the world was definitely grand.

maganne Sat 27-Sept-14 20:54:21

It's the most magical emotion of all, a bond like no other, an unconditional love that leaves you feeling so very proud and in awe of how much family mean to you.
