When my girls were small my hubby bought me a vinegar bottle ( from Woolworths) for mothers day to give to me of course I had to enthuse jow lovely it was to the girls. But hubby thought he had done well had smile all over his face, I soon put him right once the girls were in bed. We still laugh about it now 43 years later. PS his gifts have improved .

I got a microwave for our first married Christmas. Didn't really want one and had never expressed any desire for one. Still it's the thought.

For my 40th birthday I recieved a CD wrapped in Christmas paper (my birthday is in March). It was by a band who I didn't even like. To make matters worse, it was a CD that my partner had bought for himself some weeks earlier and clearly had decided he didn't like it. I was with him when he bought it (he must have forgotten?). Oh, and by the way, the wrapping paper had already been used......

I must say that some of the gifts other people have mentioned sound pretty good to me!! I'd have gladly swapped that CD for an electric toothbrush, multi-tool, power screwdriver or a host of the other things mentioned! envy

A mop. An actual mop. The reason being? "Well it's practical, isn't it?" I might return the favour with something like a wheelie bin!

We don't always do Valentine presents anymore, perhaps because the low point was an out of date French loaf when he worked at a supermarket...

1964: I'd been married for only one month to a handsome naval officer I adored. He came home looking wonderful in his uniform with a beautifully wrapped oblong package from Jenners, a superior department store on Princes Street, Edinburgh. I opened it with bated breath: it was a stainless steel carving knife and fork. Grrrrrrr.

Some years ago, before we downsized, we lived in a lovely converted farmhouse where we relied on a septic tank. Occasionally we had a blockage which I would try to sort out when DH was at work. For some reason this made me "Chief sewer sorter". can you imagine my reaction when, one Christmas, the interestingly packed gift turned out to be a set of drain/sewer set of rods.!!( He more than made up for this with a Rolex watch on our Golden Wedding)

At Christmas hubby gave me a Scholl thing for removing hard skin from my feet!

My ex DH had a draw full of free gifts or second hand items. I would work so hard trying to get him an appropriate gift, sometimes sexy other times to do with his various hobbies, but on Christmas morning he would rummage through his draw and present me with my gift, for example a pill case, or a second hand key ring, my birthday present s were just as imaginative. After 13 years I retaliated and gave him a second hand screwdriver which unfortunately he loved. After 16 years I threw in the towel and left for a wonderful life abroad. Heaven
