In our latest competition with Orion, we're giving you the chance to win a £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits by number one bestselling author Laura Barnett, a story about the power of reflection and how much our memories mean to us.

If you could choose just 16 moments to define your entire life, what would they be? That’s what Cass Wheeler must do. A musician born in 1950, Cass is now taking one day to select the 16 songs in her repertoire that have meant the most to her.

And behind each song lies a story - from the day her mother abandoned her, to her passionate first love, to the moment she lost everything. The dreams, the failures, the second chances.

So, what are the songs that mean the most to you, and evoke your most precious memories? Perhaps it was the first dance at your wedding, or the song repeated on the radio throughout your first holiday, or the only music that would rock your baby to sleep. Tell us in the comments below for the chance to win an £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits! We also have 25 copies of the book for runners-up.

Greatest Hits is published by W&N, an imprint of Orion, and is available online and from all good booksellers.

Please post your entries below by 11am 16 April.

Usual T&Cs apply.

Whenever I hear Pinball Wizard it reminds me of my first pub get togethers, when of course I was 18! Heard it through the grapevine, first boyfriend with a motorbike and Where do you go to my lovely, first job and new friends.

Truly, Madly, Deeply. The words to my life story. Our song when we met, our wedding song and sadly the song I said goodbye to my husband with at his funeral last year after he died from myeloma complications. A poignant song if ever there was.

Everything I do I do it for you from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - I always have a laugh because people sometimes confuse it with the tv series tune - Robin Hood Robin Hood riding through the glen ! So two memories one sentimental the other a giggle lol

I really like U2 - With or Without you, the song just makes me remember being young with my parents as my dad always had it playing in the car, when he was decorating, he would play that whole album through over and over!

Leader of the pack - The Shanghai La’s.
On a girls holiday we ran out of money so convinced a bar that we were a group (6) that sung in our local club and we would sing in his bar for free drinks - not sure he was totally convinced but we pulled a good crowd in (not sure for the right reasons) and we got free drinks for the rest of the holiday. We used to get stopped on the beach as people really thought we were The Lanzerettes (we had t-shirts made) Leader of the pack was our signature tune with actions and a badly rehearsed dance! Thank goodness there were no mobile phone or social media then! But it makes me laugh inside every time I hear it remembering the crazy happy holiday we all had.

Lullaby by Billy Joel. It is a beautiful reminder of the joy of family love and of the impact we have upon our children’s and grandchildren’s lives.

"If you leave me now" by Chicago is my meaningful song. My newborn daughter was being transferred to Gt Ormond St Hospital from John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. She was my fourth daughter and two of her sisters had already died in infancy. This song came on the radio & it seemed to echo what I was saying on that journey. She survived for 14 months before she too died.

The Carpenters-Close to You always calms my little ones down; they go from screaming to calm within the first bar of the song starting. It's like magic!

Your Song from Moulin Rouge. I walked down the aisle on my wedding day to this song so it always reminds me of that day. Such a beautiful song.

Our song is Fleetwood Mac's version of 'Need Your Love So Bad' which was the B side of Albatross. It was a record in the Juke Box in a café where I worked in the school holidays 1972-1974, and it is where I met my husband, as he worked in a nearby Amusement Arcade as a student and was a customer.

Has to be Robin Beck's First Time ... reminds me of my first boyfriend & first kiss! Gives me goosebumps to this day .... and I do believe I've still got the 7" knocking around under the eaves somewhere dashes off to dig it out

Ellis Presley song, can’t help falling in love with you
Reminds me of my husband, since his death last year it seems wherever I go someone sings or plays it, and I need a hankie

Nights in White Satin, Moody Blues, First time me and hubby danced together aged 15 and 16, had it played at our wedding for the 1st dance aged 20 and 21, spookily enough we often go away for our anniversary and here it being played in bars etc. This year on our 43 rd Anniversary we stayed in London and heard it playing in a shop. To be honest it does drag on a bit if your dancing to it. (Just saying) wink

I really love Josh Groban's To Where you are, it means so much to me when I lost my sister, my cousin, my mother and my father, whenever I hear it I feel them close to me, and when it comes my turn to go to heaven, I would love it played for me when the time comes!

Jess9887 Fri 06-Apr-18 20:41:02

Right here waiting for you. I danced with my dad to it with my dad and then it was played at his funeral. That song means a lot to me and my daughter xx

The very first song that I heard that had a huge effect on me and gave me goosebumps is Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel. The last chorus makes me shiver, it's very emotive.

The birth of my daughter and my marriage are my two most important memories. Whenever I hear pachelbel's canon I am immediately taken back to my wedding day. For my daughter's birth, my dh sang the beatles and rolling stones throughout the entire time we were in the hospital!
