It's that time of year again (hurrah) and time for our best reads for Christmas page...great gift ideas to cater for every taste. Recommendations include fiction, non-fiction, cookery, quizzes and more.

And one very lucky person can win the lot...worth almost £600.

Simply tell us on this thread which gift you are most looking forward to giving this Christmas. It can be big, small, homemade, expensive or free. After all, it's the thought that counts.

Usual Gransnet terms and conditions apply. A winner will be drawn at random at midday on Wednesday 12 December.

I am really looking forward to the present I get from my only grandchild (age6) as she is coming from Australia for her first Christmas here in the UK. It will brighten up what has been a bad year for us.

Bespoke guitar picks and the traditional exceptional book to my ex's lads. Plus love and peace to all.

Half a dozen railway sleepers for making raised beds & six 3 metre lengths of 6"x 2" for making outdoor seating! Christmas doesn't get much better than that starting the New Year busy in my 'man cave'.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Being just us two at Christmas, I love watching my DH's face when I give him the most loving, sentimental Christmas card I can find. The more words the better, as it makes him feel special.

My youngest grandson is still (he is 11) mad about Thomas the Tank engine. He gets teased about it, but now has joined a model railway club, so we have bought him the hornby Thomas and is taken seriously by the (nice) men and boys at this club. As they say, they are not playing with toys, they are building railways!! So Christmas will bring more model engines. Expensive, but worth it for the joy they bring.

Part of my granddaughters Christmas present is Enid Blytons Famous Five books 1 to 10 , I loved loved these books when I was young. I’m hoping she loves them too ?

I am looking forward to a sleep tracker, to measure how much sleep I get each night.

My son has recently updated my kitchen for me, having to knock down three walls of floor to ceiling tiles, replaster, replace some cupboards, install some electrical equipment, retile - he's spent nearly three weeks on it and won't take any money from me.

His house is having an extension next year and they can't afford to have a holiday, so my Christmas present to him and his wife is cash for a long weekend away, and the promise of having their two little boys to stay with me while they're away.

I’m giving my husband a new golf trolley. He normally plays every Sunday, but didn’t through the summer because he was looking after me when I was ill. Cooked more meals in 10 days that he has in 20 years!

I’m looking forward to giving my nephew the scarf I’ve knitted. I’m a novice knitter and it took me ages! but he’s 2 years old and it’s got a really cute design so I’m sure he’s going to love it - I can hardly wait!!

I am buying a copy of Philippa Pearce's book A Dog So Small for my 10 year old DD2. She loves animals and has two cats but would love a dog. This book will not only transport her to a fictional world, as all good books should , but will make me smile as her mum, my DD2 read tha book at a similar age and for a similar reason.

I've made a finger-labyrinth for a friend who is occasionally very anxious. I hope it help to re-ground him.

In the summer after fourteen years my daughter and son-in-law were blessed with not one but two babies so I will be giving lots of cuddles this Christmas when they come to stay!! Excited Grandma?

I’m looking forward to giving my granddaughter her first doll’s pram. She has just had a baby sister join the family and will love using it with mummy, both of them pushing the prams to the park.

Its the gift of time. Time given to me to be able to share 'fun' moments with family and friends.

lolarabbit Wed 05-Dec-18 17:13:31

Looking forward to giving my daughter a couple of veggie cookery books - probably Bosh! and The Roasting Tin - and then benefiting from a tasty meal or two!

I’m looking forward to giving my daughter a selection of my favourite poetry. She has been asking for poetry books and I think she is finally old enough to appreciate the more mature ones. ?

granfromafar Wed 05-Dec-18 17:42:41

I'm looking forward to giving all the grandchildren hand knitted stripey mittens that I've been making over the last few weeks. It was a great way of using up oddments of wool left over from various projects.
