Crabbing - bit of bacon on string attached to a stick. Used to attract loads of kids so I just remember those sunny days that were spent doing that, then getting fish and chips as we walked along the sea front. Good times

The six week summer holidays with my cousin, Karen. Making a frog house In her back garden. She had hundreds of frogs and we spent hours making little rooms for the frogs to live in. Needless to say they never stayed put ?

I used to love going out and playing with friends in our local woods, which were about a mile away from our home. We would usually meet up and cycle to the woods, where we would act out imaginary adventures. Often the adventures would be based on the latest Enid Blyton Famous Five adventure we had read.

Playing on what we called “the loggy”. A field of logs waiting to be sawn up. We played hide and seek, camps and just jumped off.

Playing fish and chip shops with stones and leaves for fish and chips and wrapping them in newspaper.

Ball games in the road.

Sitting by the road taking car numbers. We could sit all day and just get one or two.

I was lucky enough to live near a large field with a brook running through it. It had some sort of horizontal raised pipe going across it which was great for walking across and I frequently fell off resulting in a soaking. There was a rope swing which also led to a soaking on may occasions. Parts of the brook widened out and was wonderful for catching sticklebacks and putting them in a jam jar full of water. Frogs could be hunted (and then observed but never touched). The five-bar gate into the field was used for a variety of gymnastic moves and the flat sides of the road bridge made a great seat and was the natural choice when choosing somewhere to eat a bag of chips on days when my pocket money lasted that long. There were flowers to pick (Mum often got a bouquet of Wild Garlic and never complained about the smell) There were trees to climb and grass to sit on, as long as you avoided the cow-pats. It was a marvellous place to meet your friends and despite two or three parks in the vicinity, it was always our playground. Happy days.

Doing handstands and cartwheels in the garden and then making daisy chains. Bliss!

Whip and Top. My mother spotted these toys from her childhood in 1930’s in a closed toy shop on an evening walk. Probably 1961. Being my fab Mum she went back with her little savings purse and bought one each for us girls. Nobody else had ever seen them and they were terrific fun. So glad I saw this question as it’s put Mum into my mind for the day. Although she is rarely out of it. Thanks!

Going to see my grandparents and playing in the garden with their king charles spaniels, Rusty and Bambi. Looking back the garden was only a patch, but it seemed big and full of endless possibilities when I was a little one.

My absolute favourite activity was roller skating up and down the street and around the formal paved gardens opposite my house. I wore the wheels of the old fashioned skates down to triangles regularly.
