When I was a child I use to go to the local zoo, and spend the day going round and looking at the animals.

Playing hide and seek in our huge back garden. I usually hid high up in a tree where no one ever thought of looking.

Playing hide and seek in the 'valley gardens' and jumping off steps onto the beach with other kids. We were always out all day and only went home when we were called in. When we moved it was just playing skips and hop scotch on the pavement outside our houses.

We had an Air Raid shelter in our garden that was covered in sweet peas and my sister and I were allowed to turn it into a den. We painted it out and made a sign for the door. This was our Secret Seven hideout for our adventures with our friends. We loved it and had picnics and made up secret alphabets to send each other notes.

Walking up the river at the back of our street where I lived as a child. Swinging on a rope hung from a tree hanging over the water and dropping into the pond below. Following the river a couple of miles up to the woods. Happy days !

With a bottle of Cream Soda and a sandwich my friend and I would go for long cycle rides in the country. Stopping in a field for lunch and then off we'd go again.

We used to play in the large cable "reels" in a store yard nearby. This must have been a health and safety nightmare but it was great fun making a den in these.

Riding our bikes to the woods for the day. We had cap guns and plenty of caps and played cowboys. The boys had the shoes with animal paw prints on the soles so we pretended to track the animals through the woods.

Playing outside was ALL the rage,
Back in them there olden days,
The neighbourhood kids would idle their time,
Jumping and skipping and singing in rhyme,
All that exercise and all that air,
Not a care in the world but a world of care,
As much as I love the world wide web,
I wish my kids were outside more instead,
I love the mud and climbing trees,
The chasing boys and scabby knees,
The knocking on doors of all my friends,
The heated arguments and making amends,
Everything out in the open air,
The best of the weather and the laissez faire,
The running outside once breakfast was through,
And sneaking back in with the streetlights and dew!
