My favourite outdoor activity, I grew up with four brothers, I was second youngest, we had a lot of fun together, and mostly loved playing in the garden. My mother was a proud gardener and every year there was a wonderful display of Dahlias, gladiolis, roses and many other very english flowers. Her lawn was perfect that is until we started summer holidays home from school and turned the wimbledon lawn into a race track. We had many happy days filled with laughter, scraped knees, punctured bicycle tyres, making rabbit hutches and forever climbing fences to get our ball back from our rather stern neighbour. Our favourite game was with an old bike and a football, the idea that we each take it in turns to ride the bike around the garden, while whoever had the football would throw it at the bike to get the person off, such larks rules being, ball to be thrown between wheels only. Such lovely memories on those warm summer nights and mothers lawn recovered for the next summer.

I used to go bike riding with my school friends and playing in the fields. Playing games like 'What's the time Mr Wolf' Queenie eye who's got the ball' French skipping' in the road would you believe! We lived in a quiet Avenue where hardly anyone had a car. We were outside all day in the school holidays. Happy days.smile

I loved being out on my bike with my two friends. We would be out all day cycling to our favourite places such as local woods or river. We would only return home when we were hungry.

Following my farmer Dad around and tending the newborn lambs.

French skipping outside for hours with my best friends. It was amazing how high we could jump over a piece of elastic. I did manage to kick my thumb and ended up with a blackk nail for a while but it was all part of the fun. You don't see children playing that these days.

Popping tar bubbles in the street! I am old enough to have been a child when there were far fewer cars on the road, and most roads were finished with a coating of tar, which swelled into bubbles in warm weather. Although I lived in a big city, I could squat in the middle of the road and it was very satisfying popping the bubbles.

However, warm weather or cold, walking to the library and choosing books was a year round pleasure. Still is.

Playing tin can alley with all the kids (girls and boys) up our street until dusk when our parents called us in

Collecting tadpoles, keeping them in my doll's bath until they turned into frogs and then … knitting sleeveless jumpers for them. I had just learnt how to knit, and kitted out several frogs in navy tank tops. My father spent the evening undressing frogs and letting them go free! I think I was 7 at the time.

Skipping, especially french skipping which was a long length of elastic bands joined together to form a long loop which then went around the ankles of two players to form the shape and then whoever was 'in' would perform complicated shapes within it. I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to do it now though.

Playing out in the streets on my bike (when traffic was far more rare on side streets )

Pittcity Fri 05-Apr-19 16:04:16

Hopscotch on the pavement outside the house. Only equipment needed was a bit of chalk and a pebble.

Going for country walks with my father, if he saw a tree with low branches he would pick me up and hang me by my hands on the branch then pretend to walk away. Happy memories.

langelei Fri 05-Apr-19 16:05:19

Riding my beautiful pale blue painted tricycle (with a basket!) up and down the street. However, having been told not to cross the road and don't go out of sight! My parents had apparently saved long and hard to give it to me. sunshine

Going to our local park for a picnic and a game of rounders. If we were lucky we would get away with picking some daffodils for Mum on the way home without getting caught.

Definitely picnics on the park . We didn’t have a car but my mum used to pack a picnic and we would walk to the park with mum my brother and a few friends . Have lovely sandwiches cheese mainly and fairy cakes that my mum had made and if we were lucky a bottle of corona that was a fizzy drink that used to be delivered to the door and you would get money back when you returned the bottle. We used to play on the swings climb trees run round like mad things while my mum and her friends all used to sit chatting it was great . We didn’t have much money but we loved doing this in those long hot summers

Taking my younger siblings to the park to play all day long with a bottle of water and some biscuits. we were a family of seven children and there didn't seem to be any dangers around in those days for children to play out on their own. Happy memories.

Camping in the back garden

granfromafar Fri 05-Apr-19 16:28:56

If on my own I was another one who loved playing 2-ball against the side of the house. Also put on lots of puppet shows with my older brother and his friend across the road. How I wish we had kept all those Pelham puppets - they're worth a small fortune now!
