Playing ‘horses’ with my sister and friends. Building race courses and jumps in the fields, then racing over them. ?

My brother and I would beg a couple of old stockings off our mum and attach string to an empty jam jar for a handle. Then we’d wade along the Quaggy in our wellington boots, collecting sticklebacks which were tiny fishes. We’d be gone hours and would often end up in Lewisham, having followed the stream under bridges for miles. What fun we had - and not an adult in sight.

Kiss catch with the boys at playtime, you ran as fast as you could with your heart banging out of your chest and then when it was your 'latest crush' that caught you your heart would bang even more as he pecked you on the cheek and you could dream about it for weeks! Innocent love. No need to mither about your weight, wearing latest fashion, legs shaved etc you just had to 'be'.

All the children on our street took part in races around the outside of a nearby factory. You could choose to run the short way or the long way, it was a long time before I realised it was the same distance, you just ran around the building in opposite directions. No overweight children on our street. Happy days.

I loved riding my bike, for years I would just ride to the park with my friends

Climbing trees in Windsor Great park and getting a tummy ache after eating raw chestnuts straight from the tree!

My eldest Sons loved all Noddy and Big Ears stories.
My youngest Grandson loves Peter Rabbit.

I enjoyed going to bluebell wood with my friend and picnicking there and going home with the bluebells. Plus putting on sketches in the back garden of my friends house and charging the neighbours half a penny to come and watch.

Bike ride to the river for paddle and picnic (a jam sandwich).

Us girls playing marbles in the back entry with the boys lighting up our game with their bike headlights.
Near our house was an old, abandoned, small school with a cellar that contained a large heating boiler (unplumbed) and we used to play FLASH GORDON, being tied to the boiler like our hero and, like our hero, being rescued in the nick of time! Exciting times.

Tying a blanket to the fence and the other end to a broom handle in the garden and pretending we were in the jungle hiding from dinosaurs. We absoulutely loved in and we would end up with about 10 children from the village joining in. Happy Days

I still have the original 'indoors' Poppy and Sam Hide and Seek book that I bought for my daughter in 1983 and the grandchildren love it too, even though the book is very tatty now.

At the bottom of my garden is a small wood copse and my daughters were convinced fairies lived there, especially when I used to hide fairy dolls in the holes at the base of some of the trees. My neighbours got annoyed with me because they had to buy them too for their children because they wanted to know why all the fairies lived in our garden!!

A local meadow used to flood then freeze in the winter. I was thrilled to receive a pair of ice skates one Christmas. Using them was the activity I looked forward to all year.

Making daisy chains in the summer

When I was about 9 we were set some homework to carry out over the summer break. We had to collect wild flowers, press them, stick them into a book and find out their names and some information about them. I loved searching, collecting and pressing all the different flowers. I wish I’d still got the book!

I used to 'play tennis' for hours. Actually I was just hitting the ball against a house wall at the end of our road. It must have driven the inhabitants mad, but no-one ever complained. Loved roller skating too. When on holiday I also really enjoyed turning over rocks in rock pools and collecting the tiny crabs in my bucket.

Going out with a whole group of children from our street ( brothers and sisters all joined in) and disappearing into the woods and other exciting places with secret dens, thinking we were part of Secret Seven ( plus a few more) we organised 'Hare and Hounds' - splitting into 2 groups - first group leaving clues for the Hounds to follow - we were out for hours !

Please Mr Crocodile may I cross ..... (the road, very few cars in my day)

jeapurs54 Fri 05-Apr-19 14:50:53

Going out with my Grandad to school with him helping me learn to ride my bike. I have very fond memories of him as I used to follow him to help in the allotment and dig up the veggies.

grandmac Fri 05-Apr-19 14:51:14

Walking my dog on the beach. We’d go for what seemed like miles, and then I’d realise I had to walk all the way back! Magic memories!

glenka Fri 05-Apr-19 14:51:52

Playing outside in the sunshine with my friends.

chorkie Fri 05-Apr-19 14:53:57

Skipping, hop-scotch and hula-hooping. Such simple pleasures with lovely friends.

Venus Fri 05-Apr-19 14:55:00

My favourite activity was pretending I was in a circus and being the star juggler. I could throw three balls up in the air and catch them, then throw them against the wall . . . and not catch them all! If I was in the woods, I would balance on a piece of wood and believe myself to be the best acrobat. I was in a world of imagination!

Greenfinch Fri 05-Apr-19 14:57:16

Two ball and three ball played by myself on the wall of the house.I also liked playing at dressing up with the children next door.
