Building dens under metal climbing frame with bed sheets
And pretending to camp out with my sister

I used to love climbing trees with my friends on our local common. I always wanted to be the one who climbed the highest. Needless to say, I didn't always achieve this goal! But I always came home tired and grubby but very happy.

Going to the park with all my friends, taking jam butties and a bottle of water for lunch, sitting making endless daisy chains, not going home until it was time for tea. Happy memories.

Snakes and Ladders, dominoes, happy families, snap, scrabble and patience were my favourites.

I loved playing Skipping outside on the street. We had a big rope and two children were “ Enders”. We skipped while singing rhymes. Then the Enders changed and they got a turn of skipping. Also remember playing this at playtime at school. Don’t remember any obese children! We were too active!

An American girl joined our primary school and introduced us to a playground game called Red Rover. Memory a bit hazy, but consisted of what seemed like the entire school forming two long lines opposite each other, then one side shouted “Red Rover, Red Rover, let ‘chaffinch’ come over!” ‘Chaffinch’ then had to dash over to the opposite side, they tried to stop her, but if she succeeded, she joined that side, and it began again.
It was a bit rough I think, but was a real craze for a short time.

Having a massive skipping rope across our cul de sac and all the local children playing skipping games. We only had to get out of the way when the very occassional car came along.
The other one was riding my bike with a group of others around the footpaths surrounding our estate.

Skipping in the school playground with two dinner ladies to turn the rope and 8 or 10 of us all skipping at the same time. Also 2 balls up the wall, and 5 stones. At home we played Monopoly, and all the traditional board games - Draughts, Snakes and Ladders , Ludo etc. My favourite toy when I was about 5 was a circular cardboard box, lined with a piece of coloured paper made to look like the audience at the circus. The lid was a plain piece of see-through plastic - actually it wouldn't have been plastic then - not sure what it was made of! Inside were two tiny paper figures - male and female acrobats, about an inch tall. You got a piece of material and rubbed the top to create static electricity, and the two figures tumbled madly round the circus ring. Basically it was just cardboard and paper, and whatever the top was made of - I played with it for hours. About ten years ago I went to a collectors fair and there was my favourite toy! It was £12.50! I was sorely tempted, but didn't buy it!

I lived in Austria as a small child and my favourite activity during the winter was tobogganing. Even at 6 years old I was allowed out on my own to the local park, which had a long grassy slope.

Monopoly! We used to play for hours and hours on a cold winters Sunday and I have such fond memories of this bygone time.

I used to love Christmas, when my nan, uncles and parents would all get together in the evening and my dad would bring in the 'chicken' which was chicken shaped egg pot that my parents would put all their 1p/2p's in throughout the year ready for Christmas and the card games. I would sit with my little pot of pennies, always thrilled when I won the 'big pot' (probably about 70p) and my parents would always let me keep whatever i won smile

I used to love the game Jacks smile

Riding my bike along the country lanes where I lived - in the summer I'd be out all day with my friends riding aimlessly around, stopping for a picnic, picking wild flowers to take home. Our growling empty stomachs usually sent us scurrying back home as the sun started to dip in the evening!

Winter evenings and wet weekends were spent with my nose in a book. Reading was my great love as a child and I devoured books, borrowing 4 at a time from the library most weeks.

I loved playing monopoly, my kids won't entertain it they prefer the x box

I was a very strange child, I think! As I lived in a flat I had no garden but I certainly had a very active imagination. I used to blow a small paddling pool up in the living room and I would neatly put all my teddy bears and cuddly toys around the circumference of it, put my toy binoculars in the 'boat' and imagine we were going on a wonderful journey down the Amazon river. I used to play the game for many blissful hours at a time.

Going to my local library. It was so exciting walking in the door knowing I could choose 3 new books to read. Loved reading. Used to send me off to another world. My favourite book as a child was Mr Whisper and Mr Whisper Returns. I can still remember the story. I tried to buy them for my GD but they went out of print many many years ago (I'm nearly 65). Shame.

SheenaBatey123 Thu 14-Nov-19 22:14:06

Games like May I? and Simon Says which a whole gang of us played in the street before tea and before lots of cars

KEMullen Thu 14-Nov-19 22:15:20

Swinging whilst singing at the top of my voice on the swing fixed to a beam in the barn. Happy days!
