I loved playing draughts with my gradfather who taught me how to play the game

I was a brownie and greatly enjoyed working for and learning more by achieving badges. These skills learnt as a brownie and subsequently a girl guide have been invaluable all my life.

I loved making cosy dens by using bed sheets, tucking one end behind a radiator and the other over chairs. Then filling the inside with blankets & cushions. I would spend hours in there playing with friends.

My nana had a card game called PIT. We had hours of fun after Christmas dinner (the only time I can remember playing it). I can't recall the rules of the game, just that we had to shout "PIT" at the top of our lungs and move our cards face down.

As a child in the 70's I remember Clackers, they were all the rage at my school - until they were banned. I used to adore colouring in as well I remember my brother & I used to get a poster colouring in set every Christmas - kept us busy for hours!

Playing 'the alphabet' game with my very much loved, late Nana. Pick a subject ie Girls names, Fruits, Places and see who could name the most working through the alphabet.

Other than that, spending time and riding my beloved ponies.

I had a pretty idyllic childhood.

Playing schools with my sister lining our teddies and dolls up-even the real animals and making little exercise books and giving lessons . Even marking the books and serving milk and biscuits at break time ! I always thought I would be a teacher but ended up being a nurse ?

Bingo or housey housey as it was known then, played round the table at my elderly grandparents house for half pennies.

clackers, marbles, hide and seek, making fences and riding over them on pretend horses

ottypotty Tue 12-Nov-19 11:01:52

Using the unused part of my mums washing line to make a skipping rope, doing 'rounders' one jump 2 spins and beating the 'world record; or having a long rope, 1 at each end with 3 or 4 children in the middle and skipping - for another 'world record' .

Silvergran59 Tue 12-Nov-19 11:05:16

we loved constructing 'bogies' out of old pram wheels, wood and rope, with a little help from dad, and being pulled around the neighbourhood by my pals - taking turns to ride and be pulled. Cost nought and tired us out, and we were recycling our siblings prams too smile

Spirograph, because after thinking initially it was a strange gift for me (can’t draw, even a straight line) I could pretend I was drawing properly. Something about the way you followed the contours & the lovely colours. The rest of the time, I always had my head in a book or comic.

Oh so many to choose from but I think my favourites was playing shops with my Nan as a young child. All the packets and tins used to come out of her larder which I displayed on her dining room table, the fruit and vegetables were displayed just like they were at the greengrocers, the flour, sugar etc all came out too. Nan would come into my shop and ask for half a pound of this or that, I’d weigh it out and give it to her ? Thinking back as well as being great fun it taught me about budgeting, counting, using money , weighing etc and taught Nan about decimalisation! I can still remember the way she used to convert everything from old money to new money! Thanks for the prompt. Lovely memories ...

Going to the local park and wandering around. Fishing in the pond and looking for frogs and newts

I was an only child and always looked forward to the holidays when my cousins came to stay so we could all play together. At Christmas we went over to stay with my aunt and uncle so all cousins could be together again. I'll always think very fondly of those holidays as we were all very close.

Playing in the hay barn and grain loft.

Absolutely loved skipping with a big rope so we could all jump in and out. Recently bought a big rope for my grand daughter and she and her friends love it as much as I always did

lizzyw57 Tue 12-Nov-19 12:49:19

We played so many games, french skipping, two ball, hopscotch, marbles etc. Lots of fresh air and friends!

Jewils48 Tue 12-Nov-19 13:06:34

Playing hopscotch, such a simple game but loved it and gave me the chance to play with friends

aggie Tue 12-Nov-19 13:10:28

Reading , and getting lost in a book . I had a bad experience in the library , I tried to change my book one day after reading it overnight , no , wasn’t allowed ! I had to keep it for a week ! Dad let me borrow his ticket and I managed to get two books at a time
That came to a halt one day when I came home reading my book and Mum asked was the baby good ? I had left my baby sister asleep in her pram outside the library . I was back to one book as a punishment ?

Sitting in our old Anderson air raid shelter in the winter twilight baking potatoes in an old enamelled bottomless bread bin over a fire.

Fiachna50 Tue 12-Nov-19 14:23:02

I loved reading. Enid Blyton's Secret Seven books in particular , along with Famous Five.

devonnanny Tue 12-Nov-19 14:35:52

Playing chess with my dad as it gave us rare quality time together which continued as I got older.

grandMattie Tue 12-Nov-19 14:52:17

I loved climbing trees and especially playing "catch" with my cousins in a huge Magnolia grandiflora in my grandparents garden. The idea of falling out of the tree was terrifying and added to the thrill.

What I remember most, and best, is the freedom. I lived by the seaside and remember coming home from school, getting changed out of my uniform, a quick bite to eat and straight out again...on the beach, looking for precious stones, shells and whatever the tide brought in...that and scooting around on my roller skates then later, in my teens, cycling for miles to meet up with friends. Happy days smile
