Playground games - Hopscotch all the way... I loved it! At home it was Chinese Chequers and Monopoly, and the latter could go on for days. Simpler times!

I remember building camps out of anything; sticks, grass clippings, leaves... It was a combination of playing house and defending your territory against other children. Happy memoriessmile

Conkers for me, we had two mature horse chestnut trees in our front garden. We tried all sorts of tricks to harden them too, vinegar and baking in the oven and so on. I also loved skipping with the long rope held between two girls so that a whole group of us could jump in, who else remembers "Salt, Pepper, Vinegar, Mustard when it's your birthday please jump in"?

I was born in the 40's just at the end of the war...we just loved the simple things...one favourite was making perfume from flower petals...usually roses...also playing shop...with empty boxes, saved by my mum and our next door neighbour...the highlight, was one year I was given a weighing scales for my birthday and had great fun weighing, rice and other dry goods ...nice times...and little expense...

Doing jigsaw puzzles and sitting by nearby lake reading books

I loved playing hopscotch in the street. This was the 1950’s and we felt safe playing out then.
I also enjoyed skipping, again in the street.
One girl either end of the rope would twirl it round and we had to skip through without getting caught.
Oh, happy days.

There were five huge horse chestnut trees on the green opposite our house, and we children couldn't wait for the conkers to develop and fall. We all had carrier bags full, dried the biggest, threaded them on lengths of string, and attempted to smash those of our opponents. Competition was fierce and we all had secret methods to harden our prizewinners, from soaking in vinegar to baking in the oven. "Conkers" is now banned in schools for H&S rules......

Jigsaws. I remember being allowed to stay up late to help my father finish his jigsaw of The Flying Scotsman when I was 5. I have loved doing jigsaws ever since - the more pieces and higher difficulty rating the better. I can even do them back to front!

So many games we all played in the 1950s. Outdoors it was two-ball against the wall or skipping with a long rope and a girl at each end - in both cases, chanting rhymes like 'The Big Ship Sails down the Alley Alley O', or 'Farmer wants a Wife'. Indoors, colouring books with crayons or a Reeves paint set and a jam jar of water, with newspaper on the table. I didn't much like board or card games, as my older brother always won. I think he cheated!

Summer holidays was taking my bike and spending all day in the countryside and visiting friends living on a farm.

I used to love collecting stones and smashing them open with much larger stones. Many of then smaller stones were surprisingly pretty inside. I still love stones and am always picking them up to examine when we are out walking.

Stamp collecting, Monopoly and Cluedo.

Kikibee Wed 13-Nov-19 10:53:16

I loved playing kerbie out on the street with all the kids in my street. There was a recent article on the TV about a kerbie revival a few weeks ago and brought memories flooding back...such fun!

What's not to like about HOPSCOTCH? Old fashioned, sure - some even say it goes back to the Romans - but such fun and so good for you when you Grans were kids. You'd hop along, making friends as you went, the numbers and the counting also helping you to get familiar with maths. And what was more, your body learnt to balance and follow its own rhythm as you kept moving along. Which is maybe why you now keep nasties like arthritis under control. But the cherry on the cake was, of course, the chance of winning.

I used to play at being detectives with my friend - we had our own detective agency in our shed!

Learning to dance classic ballet and tap, I went to stage school and between our yearly dance tuition/exams we’d do pantomime and summer holiday shows every year, I have so many fond memories, it was very tiring but I loved it, we all had a great laugh both on and off stage, sometimes the dress rehearsals were the most enjoyable, I’ll forever be grateful to my poor mum who would sew all my costumes by hand ? she grew to really hate sequins ! thanks

Hide and seek loads of fun

grannysmith953 Wed 13-Nov-19 11:08:47

The whole family playing card games, particularly Racing Demon - rather knocked the cards about and you were in danger of having your fingers flattened, fast, furious and very competitive. Great fun, especially on rainy days in the caravan.

My first visit to the local library. I can still remember the smell of all those wonderful books and the excitement of being able to choose three to take home with me. Magical!
