Mainly at Christmas and birthdays when I tell people how lovely their present was and it was just what I wanted or needed and is then dispatched to the charity shop as soon as possible.

I threw my awful sewing in the bin when I was 10 and told the teacher it was lost

When someone asks me if there haircut looks nice and it doesn't

In many occasions I guess. I think I tend to do it when it's something of small scale in terms of events but may be big in terms of emotional impact for that person hearing my white lie.

Santa, Easter Bunny, Tooth Fairy. Need I say more :-)

I tell them only to not make people feel bad ...like when someone makes the worst cup of tea!

My mother in law gave me a cheese knife and cutting board as a Christmas present, saying that she got it as a free gift with another purchase and that she 'thought it would do for you'. Choosing not to be insulted I told her it was just what I wanted.

When my husband asks if that's new..... nope I have had it ages, my sister gave it to me or I brought it on Ebay. If I go shopping with my friend she takes my purchases home with her if my husband picks us up.... it's just saving him from the worry about who's money am I spending lol xx

When living in Australia my friend arrived at Xmas time and very proudly presented me with a box of walkers shortbread, I told her how delighted I was, that I hadn’t seen walkers shortbread since I left Scotland a number of years previously...then my lovely 9 year old went into the pantry and brought out the exact box and said, now we’ve got two...luckily my friend saw the funny side!

My grandchildren live in Australia and every Christmas and birthday, I send them a box of gifts.
My husband always asks how much the postage was to send these and I always tell him it was at least half of the actual cost...

When my husband has asked if the garment I'm wearing is new, "Oh no, I've had it for yonks!"

Every time my younger DD buys me a gift. She has terrible taste! But it's the thought that counts!

When I’ve bought something I didn’t want my husband to know the price of!

When I use frozen pastry to make mince pies. I'm asked did I bake them myself, I answer yes. Well I did, sort of ...!

I have told a few in my lifetime but the one which immediately springs to mind was when I went out with a friend one evening and we went to a club and stayed there until the early hours of the morning but I phoned home at 10.30pm to say that I was staying at a friends house and my parents did not need to worry.

I guess when I told my husband that I only had two lovers before him. ?

Today when I told my son we were having supermarket pizza for his birthday tea. Instead he was surprised by a knock at the door - pizza from his favourite takeaway!

When my mother in law took time to make clothes for my daughter and we said how delightful they were - before throwing them into the wash to rid them of the horrible smell of cigarettes.

When I told my husband I couldn't get him a birthday present this year because of the lockdown. He was happily surprised when he woke up to a lovely gift as well as cake on his birthday!

I told my 8 year old grandson Riley a teeny little white lie that we were going to the airport to pick up his Aunty Lisa. He got the biggest surprise ever when we boarded the plane to visit her for a week down in Wales. First time flying for him & his face was a picture when he got to sit in the cock pit smile

Think it through and if telling the whole truth is going to hurt the recipient I am selective with my response!

elbowlicker Thu 30-Apr-20 15:13:01

Every year when I tell my children that Santa is watching them!

My daughter adored her grandma, (my mother-in-law) and would hate to hear anything about her that wasn't nice! She asked me years ago "What was Nana like when you first knew her?" I said " She was pretty and funny and lively, and we really liked each other!" That last bit...A white lie.
