Probably to assuage children a long time ago

My MIL asked me how years after what we thought to the outfit she made and wore to our wedding. The absolute truth was it was hideous and not well made so I felt I had no choice but to create a little white lie and say something non commital to get off the subject "yes, it was great you got so much enjoyment from making and wearing it".

When asked how was the chocolate, I said it was very nice and creamy as it came all the way from Switzerland. I could not bear to remind my friend I was allergic to milk products!!

I try very hard to avoid lying. If you are careful with your words you can usually say something true without disappointing people. However, as a culture we are all involved in the fantasy of Father Christmas, the Easter bunny, Elf on the shelf, the tooth fairy, etc. I doubt if many people could deny those little white lies - but they are socially acceptable and a delight for the children in our midst

I told my mother-in-law every year that the lovely presents she received on her birthday and at Christmas were from her son, when in fact they were chosen, paid for, wrapped and delivered by me. I had to cover up his indifference and stinginess.

When our daughter was very young we used to share our Christmas chocolates with her. However, we used to pretend that the orange creams were our favourites and as a special treat she could have one. Neither of us really liked orange creams but Gemma thought she was getting the best! When she grew up we confessed and she told us that she did in fact love orange creams anyway. So there you are...

I have been given gifts more times than I care to remember which I've disliked!

More often though I've had to tell white lies to avoid going to parties and such because I would rather a friend or two rather than 20+ people. Its amazing how great this lockdown has been!!

Occasionally presents are thanked for with a white lie, I once said I really liked a perfume which I wasn't very keen on but I put it to use to as an air freshener now and and again. smile

I just bought lots of luxury chocolates online and my lie was that I told my husband they had 50% off. He is now waiting eagerly for them to arrive because they were an absolute bargain. lol

oh dear - so many ... most often and usually when my lovely children make breakfast as a surprise and i comment how lovely it is !

Not sure I could say I lie all the time but sometimes if I don’t want to work sometimes I will say I have plans when my diary is really empty ?

OneJollyTeacher Sat 02-May-20 11:09:13

Probably more times than I can count, more often than not to spare someone's feelings, or to avoid a conversation I'm just not ready to have yet....

barbarasct Sat 02-May-20 11:29:23

I try not to as I think people can tell.

VickyH1965 Sat 02-May-20 12:16:51

I told my son that I had cooked his dad a meal every day during lockdown but that is not quite true - sometimes I warm meals, put others in the ping or he gets his own!! Am I bad?

Told a work friend her cake tasted fantastic

nornironlady Sat 02-May-20 14:37:01

Often to save feelings or to save explaining the harsh reality of life to my 5 year old. Sometimes for purely selfish reasons like pretending I forgot to return a message or a phone call.

Paulthepython Sat 02-May-20 15:57:17

I told my partner I didn't see him when I was driving home the other night, he was walking back from work but only a couple of streets away from home, I just really needed a wee :p

when asked 'does my bum look big in this'....

CompGirl23 Sat 02-May-20 19:38:11

Yes a little white lie is far better than upsetting someone and hurting their feelings.

My now husband and I took my 9 year old son (he's 36 now) to visit Wales (DH is Welsh). Son was given spending money which burnt holes in his pocket and he just wanted to spend it as soon as we got to the seaside in Pembrokeshire. So I told him because he was in Wales not England, he could only spend £1 coins with the Welsh Dragon on...

Generally, my white lies are based on something that's happened in the past, such as my ileostomy bag leaking, which has made me late, getting stuck in traffic and getting stuck behind a tractor for ages (I do have a problem with time keeping ☹️). I don't have a problem with having told the children, and now the grandchildren about Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy, as I really get caught up in the excitement of it all, and end up believing it myself!

moanymum Sat 02-May-20 23:16:57

How could I choose just one? I'm a parent!!!!

Janemoore Sun 03-May-20 10:57:13

When my 3 children were small I use to tell them the brown on bananas was actually chocolate ?

Shells Sun 03-May-20 11:04:20

when it would hurt the other person not to do so

ivytree Sun 03-May-20 11:51:40

A friend made me some home made cakes not so long ago and they were barely cooked, just awful, but I told her they were yummy! Bless
