Pretty much every time I open my mouth it lubricates life we couldn't bear half the things people would really like to tell us

Telling my mother a hideous cardigan she bought me was lovely, it remained in the attic for many years.

When my daughters (now in their 30’s) were pre school age I used to have terrible trouble getting them to go to sleep. I would tap on their bedroom window with the clothes prop. I would tell them Mr Punch is outside and he would come in if they didn’t go to sleep. Sometimes I would ring my husband who would be at work and get him to talk to them and he would Tell them he had seen Mr Punch and he was on his way round to make sure they were asleep.

I would never lie unless it were obviously such (in which case it is hardly a lie), but I can remember when we took the kids to a forest walk area and told them there were dinosaurs there. They believed us! Well, it made for an exciting day out!

I told my grandchildren when they were naughty that Grandparents were allowed the only ones that were allowed to smack them !

I last told a colleague her new haircut was lovely and suited her, it wasn't and it didn't! In my defence it wasn't really a lie , just a difference of opinion!

Just like the ‘Gavin and Stacy’ episode when Gavins mum Pamela pretends to be vegetarian, I did something similar. Although I was at that point eating a much more meat free diet, my husband had not signed up to do the same. We had a nice meal with new (vegan) acquaintance. She is now a good friend and that white lie has meant that we eat vegan meals together often now, but the original white lie has now switched to husband who does not know I use soya mince instead of meat for my delicious Mexican Meatballs....... Or that he eats vegetarian food at least 5 days a week.

I told my 3 year old who was still waking in the night when he was 3 for a feed that we had run out of milk, he protested but did go back to bed. Next night he did the same but just went back to bed... Then he stopped getting up in the night...

We had an aunt who would give us huge cut glass vases as gifts, so big and heavy that they needed vast quantities of flowers and water to fill them making them too heavy to even lift !
We always said how great they were as she was such a lovely lady and kind to everyone. They are still hidden away gathering dust and I still feel guilty about the white lies.

Do you like my new hair colour asked a friend? My reply? It's absolutely striking. She loved the comment . I hadn't actually lied but I hadn't told the truth either. Both happy

I often told white lies to the children when they were younger to protect them ... especially the questions starting with 'Have you ever'!!!

When I was young I wrote ‘Chelsea’ in pen on top off a bathroom seat/cupboard thing, Well of course I didn’t do it, it had to be one of my five brothers!

Told a white lie about the price of some Le Creuset mugs I bought for a present for someone who I knew really wanted them. Said I got them in the sale so they weren’t that expensive!

I once took a day off sick so that I could get my partner a birthday present

when I had to tell my dying mother that everything was going to be fine. When we knew the cancer had gone to her brain

I told my daughter all the Easter goodies were gone...

I tell them all the time when people ask if I am ok. I say I am ok when really I'm not.

The last white lie I told was that I was feeling ill so my neighbour wouldn't come over, I wanted a bit of me-time with my crime documentaries!

Several times about presents I have received.

I told my granddaughter that her daddy was very well behaved as a child (hoping she would take the hint!) ..he wasn't .. he was the naughtiest of my four children .. now he's a sergeant in the police force!!

I told my little daughter that an injection wouldn’t hurt - and it did! I’m not sure she trusted me after that.

I've lied to my mate.....she challenged me to to the couch potato to 5k during lockdown. She's going great guns....she thinks i am too.....whoops

At Christmas, my mum brought me a bag and it wasn’t my style, so I told her that I liked the bag when I didn’t

When someone asked me if I liked their new sofa. I didn’t but there’s not much point in telling them that.

I tell white lies when saying thank you for most presents. I've tried to discourage people giving me presents as I end up feeling sad when things aren't wanted when a really nice gesture has been made to give the gift. Failing that I try to steer things towards what I'd like!
