Anybody feeling scared?

I’m more worried about the untruths, half-truths, speculation and hype that seem to be taking a grip of the GN forums. We don’t see this when seasonal flu quietly kills on average 17,000 (mainly elderly and vulnerable) people a year in the UK, do we?

We’ll follow the official guidelines (and not the half-baked ones from unqualified randoms on social media or the ones speculated on in gutter press headlines).

We would have to cancel the hosp appts i guess.

The great thing about Gransnet is that we come from all over the world, and can give the perspective, advice and hopefully re-assurances from our own experiences. What worries me is how sad are some of the Italian stories. Good luck to all of you, especially those who are already going through the mill with other health issues. Why not set up a neighbourhood Whatsapp, to keep tabs on your locals? Stock up on books, postcards and stamps. If you take anti-inflammatory meds then yes, the Guardian article is a bit of a worry, but check it out.

I refuse to be scared...I am in the "non vulnerable" sector as am 59 and fairly fit & healthy. I am taking all the things that are being advised to do to keep it that way and to ensure those who are to be safe.
I am concerned about those older people who go to groups etc as thry will become even more isolated

My 21 yr old son usually goes to gym 4 times a wk but wont go now i think? He does wipe everything down though anyway before using it as he has OCD,so this time is a complete nightmare for him!

If my life is limited I am certainly not going to waste any of the time left me by being scared.

I am just being fatalistic, why worry about something you can do nothing to control.

For the year 17/18 flu related deaths in the uk amounted to over 26,000 of which over 22,000 were over 65..

No confirmed figures for last winter or this winter.

Obviously the elderly are more vulnerable to anything going round, it is part of the natural cycle of birth and death. I appreciate being advised of the risk but object to being forced to stay indoors, just because successive governments have failed to preserve our health service which was once the envy of the world.

I'm 64 no major health problems, but have an 84 year old uncle who lives nearby on his own, who we help out and care for, who has health problems, but doesn't understand how at risk he is. He still goes on buses doesn't use any hand sanitizer or gloves. As he says if he gets it he gets it. I keep trying to tell him without frightening him that that's not good. But my other worry when they say over 70s stay isolated. He's got a couple of hospital apt to go to, what happens then.?

I was A&e last night for myself, and saw an older gentleman come in, wearing a mask and the porters were wearing masks and aprons too. I didn't notice any less care for him than the rest of us, in fact there were quite a few elderly[over 80] there all being cared for.

Mum now in hospital, cordoned off ward, tests are taking 3 days, she has alzheimers and is distressed. Care homes are in some cases not taking residents back even if they are clear of corona. Going in to speak to doctors tomorrow as obviously no visiting.

Yes it is frightening

I am rather concerned but more worried about some people complacency and attitude towards the virus with regards to 'carrying on as normal' )whilst no doubt stockpiling loo rolls etc!. This attitude of not taking precautionary measures, as advised the the government, scientists and health experts is not only putting their lives at risk but those around them). Would any of us want to be responsible for passing it on to someone else which might result in their death????

I’m scared of loosing my loved ones .

I admit to feeling a little scared today . I look after my DH, my elderly father, my grandchildren and try to run a small business too. I’m worried that if my dad has to be isolated it will mean even more will be piled on me . I know that sounds selfish but I just don’t know how I’ll manage .

Yes am scared. Have underlying health issues with bronchial susceptibility, asthma and have has two cardiac arrests due to a previous medical incident - so yes I have to work but can hopefully do most of that from home but will otherwise try to limit any contact. Keep safe all

Me too, just awful chest/temp/cough/vertigo/breathlessness! I’d never ever experienced anything like it. Wondering now if it was an early strain of Corona ?‍♂️

Self isolate,... surely walking or sitting outside in the fresh air away from other people won't spread virus? Doing so won't cause touching or breathing airborne droplets?

LJP1 thanks for info,please come back on regularly with updates if you can,im so worried for everyones health,i was concerned the WHO didnt seem to be doing much to develop a 'cure' or injection or something for it,i doubt itl be cleared by winter though.

Glad not only me feeling worried, I couldn't sleep last night mulling all this over and I am not normally a worrier at all, a very positive person. But I do feel worried and unsettled with all this. It does help to know other people feel the same and we need to support each other as much as possible.

I will admit to been scared my husband will be starting his first radiotherapy cycle on Monday which means visiting a hospital daily with a compromised immune system

Put into perspective, you are far more likely to die of hundreds of other things. On a global scale of threat to life, Covid19 is a long way down the list.
Of course we should be cautious, take care of ourselves and others, but panic should not be on the list of things to do.
I’m in the “at risk” group three times over and live alone with no family, but I have planned what I need to do, if I need to, and also offered my help to my community for those who may need it. I’m certainly not giving in to this hysteria.

Guess people on theit own will fare worst. If we cannot get out, no one can get in, food shopping is out, how do we survive? Ok for Government & the well off & those with family nearby to take food parcels but what about the loners?
Feeling very scared as on my own.

Im worried for my sons,21&nrly 17 as they are in at risk group medically,and live at home,and i do lots for them(they have cp)&asthma.i too have lots of underlying health issues,so i need to be around as long as possible to be here for them,i worry for my older 'kids' as some of them have health issues,but my DGC too several of them have health problems,and i worry for my DinL who is pregnant with a much longed for child.I think all this is starting to make us a bit resentful as its not something we asked for or risked ourselves is it??

Not at all.

The isolating will reduce carbon dioxide production, so global warming will benefit and with a bit of luck, people will realise how many things we can do, without flying / travelling daily to work and buying processed foods. This will all be to the benefit of our children's generation.

The summer is coming when outside activities will be easier and contact will be less problematic. Also the autumn when the winter flu strikes will be clear of Covid-19.

Tests are in the process of being prepared in large quantities so we will be able to screen people and there is already a drug, remdesivir, which shows promise and is being tested & processed.
